Answer:	First you have to drill out the old rivet. Easy enough. Then as long as: 1. The new rivet fits down into that hole and 2. the thickness of the materials that you are trying to connect is not thicker than 1/8" (the distance between the upper lip of the rivet and the ball at the end of the rivet), then it would work just fine.
