Boy we couldn't have been more wrong! Destroyed 1st use at slow speed off the speed chart and using tapping fluid to lubricate. These are absolute garbage. AGAIN THESE ARE ABSOLUTE GARBAGE BITS. I've got a free pocket knife from a gas station that drills better. Shavings from the first time we used these bits were put in the MassSpec at his showed NO cobalt at all present. For those that don't know a mass spectrometer gives you a breakdown of the molecules and elements present in a sample. Upon my complaining to the seller, I was told well.... "They're only cobalt colored and aren't intended for use on steel or hard metal alloys." You buy a cobalt %containing bits to handle the higher frictional heats encounters when cutting/drilling tougher steel alloys, stainless, or even just wanting your High Speed Steel bits to last longer. It's so your bit doesn't take damage and be destroyed or worse yet damage the piece you're drilling (especially when you're using tapping fluid too to lubricate the cutting edges reducing that friction and subsequent damaging heat) and M42 is the highest grade of cobalt bits I have & that I know of / have used. You buy titanium bits from M7 (high molybdenum for toughness) to M35 (HSS with a 5% titanium component) or the king of titanium bits and heat dissipation (HSS with 8% titanium) so your bits won't be damaged to the point they're unable to be used again. These high end bits you pay for ones made right. There are proper recipies the boundaries mix up molten of all the components from the iron and nickel of base steel, to adding molybdenum for toughness, cobalt for thermal resilience, titanium coatings to reduce friction, and many many more components in a bakery for steel. These bits are beyond poorly made and are NOT good moreless decent bits. So I'll reiterate fro my own and others experience, THESE ARE JUNK AND YOU DONT "NEED" THEM.....well unless you need to drill holes in pure Gallium at ambient temperatures above 30°C. And just a FYI I have 1/8" M42 aircraft legnth bits that'll drill through a 10" hardened steel block and a 1.0" M42 bit that could just about drill aluminum foil without tearing it. Size has nothing to do with quality. Small bits for small sheets and big bits for big sheets is a cop out answer to make the customer think they're the problem in how they're using the bits. Not sure it's the exact width but you would have a flat land in the middle of the groove and it wouldn't be able to plunge into the material. You'd probably be better off using a spot drill or engraving cutter instead of a chamfer mill.

Question:	How thick of mild steel can these stepper bits drill through
Answer:	Depending on the bit you are talking about, the step down is different. The skinny one has step downs measured in 1/16 steps and so does one other. The fat one steps down in 1/8 steps. If you look carefully at the pictures you may be able to read the increments or in some of the descriptions the steps are indicated. If you purchase the three bit set you will be able to drill any sized hole you should ever need. I used these on aluminum and other non ferrous materials that are fairly thin. If you are drilling in wood or getting ready to do a wood working project then you may want to reconsider and purchase individual drill bits.

Answer:	I just drill 4 holes in 1/4 thick wall on 4 inch x 4 inch steel tubing going up to 3/4 diameter ...cut like butter. These are awesome.

Answer:	It should. I'm a mechanic and I've used these to drill out broken exhaust hardware and lug nuts. Key to making it easy and make them last long is not to drill too fast and use a lubricant such as a penetrating lubricant.

Answer:	Sadly to say that it does not hold up to stainless steel. I am an Exterior Electrician and ordered a bunch of these for my guys to use out in the field. It did not work on our Exterior panels nor on our Transformers the first, second or third time. The bits gave out and dulled as soon as they started drilling. We ended up purchasing high end step-bits we've ordered before and they worked well. I did a trial with these bits and ended up short on the winning end.

Answer:	In this case you are right. Mine also is 1/2 inch shaft But what they meant in the description 1/4 - 2 3/8 was the size variation of the holes the bit drilled.. The reason I bought this was because it did a 2 inch hole and I could not find one in town that did.. I bought it because it had a 1/2 shaft for my drill press.. I think what you did (as I have done many times myself) is read it to fast and though it said 1/4 - 3/8 when it said 1/4 - 2 3/8.. Send it back I am sure they will take it back. Or you could do what I do sometimes and that is smack myself in the head for being in to much of a hurry and sell it on craigs list... Hope this helped.

Answer:	Absolutely, it can. However, if I were you I would attempt that job with a high tempered heat treated drill bit and a dab of cutting oil to preserve the bit. Good drilling to you and be safe please.

Answer:	You could use for that purpose, as with all things when used correctly it will last longer. Putting something behind the wall of the trashcan will help and it causes some pretty heavy jerks when it steps so hold the trashcan securely.
