12 best wood filament 3d printers
Wood filament 3D printers are a type of 3D printer that utilize a special filament made from wood particles and a polymer binder. These printers are related to the categories of 3D printing filament, 3D printing supplies, additive manufacturing products, and fall under the broader category of industrial scientific equipment. Here's what you need to know about wood filament 3D printers:
Filament Composition: Wood filament, used in these 3D printers, typically consists of a mix of finely ground wood particles (often sawdust or wood flour) and a thermoplastic polymer binder. The wood content can vary, but it gives the final prints a wood-like appearance and texture.
Printer Compatibility: Wood filament 3D printers are designed to work with standard Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printers. These printers have a heated nozzle and a build platform, which are essential for extruding and printing with the wood filament.
Wood-Like Finish: One of the main advantages of using wood filament is that it produces 3D prints with a wood-like finish. The printed objects can have a natural wood grain appearance, making them suitable for applications where aesthetics matter, such as prototyping wooden products or creating decorative items.
Post-Processing: After printing with wood filament, users can further enhance the wood-like appearance by sanding, staining, or varnishing the printed objects.This allows for customization and refinement of the final look and feel.
Applications: Wood filament 3D printers find applications in various industries, including product design, architectural modeling, educational projects, and hobbyist woodworking. They are especially popular for creating prototypes and mock-ups of wooden products.
Advantages: Some advantages of using wood filament 3D printers include the ability to create wood-textured prints without the need for traditional woodworking tools, as well as the potential for cost-effective and rapid prototyping.
Challenges: Using wood filament can be more challenging than standard 3D printing materials because the wood particles can lead to nozzle clogs and wear. Users may need to experiment with print settings to achieve the desired results.
Availability: Wood filament is available in various wood types, such as pine, cedar, and oak. Users can choose the type that best suits their project requirements.
Environmental Considerations: While wood filament does contain real wood, it is not a sustainable or eco-friendly alternative to traditional woodworking. It's important to consider the environmental impact when using such materials.
In summary, wood filament 3D printers are specialized 3D printing machines that enable the creation of 3D prints with a wood-like appearance. They are used in various industries for prototyping and creating visually appealing objects. Users can post-process the prints to achieve the desired wood finish, making them a versatile tool for those who want to incorporate wood aesthetics into their 3D-printed projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | approx how many feet on a 225 gram spool |
Answer: | About 90ft. Based off the idea that a full 1kg spool is about 360ft. |
Question: | Is this sandable |
Answer: | I do not believe there is wood in this filament you would be sanding the PLA material which I have done with the diamond impregnated sponge pads with water. |
Question: | Is the bonze filament just bronze colored pla or is it bronze infused pla |
Answer: | Just colored |
Question: | Marble clogs every print. prusa mk3s on 210c. any special settings |
Answer: | I’ve used this on both my Ender 3 and my ANYCUBIC I3 MEGA, and haven’t had a problem with either. Some suggestions that might help: 1) Slow the speeds down so the filament has time to melt. 2) do not use ANYTHING metal on the tip to remove the starting filament. I used to use tweezers and found I would have problems with clogging. Now I use a piece of filament to remove the “drip” and haven’t had any more problems. If you think about it, the opening is very small and tapered. That means at the very tip it is extremely thin and anything thicker and metal will deform the opening. Using a piece of filament, the worst that could happen is the piece melts, but it won’t deform the opening. You probably need to replace the tip. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know the settings if used on a craftbot |
Answer: | I'm not familiar with the Craftbot 2, but just use the same basic settings you'd use for PLA and make minor adjustments from there. That has worked well for me. |
Question: | Do i need to worry about ventilation with this filament? i've only printed with pla |
Answer: | No. This IS PLA. Its just fine wood dust mixed in with the PLA. I has no smell while printing just like PLA and you can use the same settings as PLA. I found that this sticks too well to BuildTak. I would suggest Kapton tape or PET film. |
Question: | can this be used with a da vinci 1.0 printer. I have the ability to mod the temperature, jus wondering if any one ever tried? What temp setting |
Answer: | As long as you can mod the Temperature, and speed settings you should be fine. I print this at about 220c but am still dialing it in. start off printing it at like 60% normal speed for good results, and despite what you may see other places be sure your infill is at 25-30% in parts you want filled, as the material doesn't bridge the best. |
Question: | Do I need an upgraded nozzle |
Answer: | I've printed well over 300 reels of Hatchbox wood filament in a production setting. Wood filament IS abrasive, and will rapidly degrade standard brass nozzles. There will be a noticeable degradation in print quality in as little as a single reel, and print quality will be unacceptably compromised before you finish a second reel. If you plan on printing much wood, you'll need to invest in hardened nozzles, period. Plated brass is better, but even that will fail after 6-8 reels. Hardened tool steel nozzles are much better, and last me 25+ reels before replacement is necessary. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the glass transition temperature for spla? i am just wondering how it compares to abs and petg |
Answer: | The temp recommended for this Pla from the company is 200-210c. I have yet to find the sweet spot for good adhesion to the glass, I have wasted more prints, than completed prints. Honestly, spend a little more and get better quality. |
Question: | What is Padding. Because they are recommending 20% to 30% of padding |
Answer: | Padding is the filling density. Set it between 20%-30% would make your print less brittle. |
Question: | Is this PLA food-safe to use for cookie cutters and such |
Answer: | The PLA is not certified as food safe. Regardless of the type of filament that is used, 3D printing that uses FDM technology generally is not safe for printing food safe parts. There are many reasons for this. One main factor is because bacteria can build up in the small gaps that is created in between the layers that are printed. Another reason is because typical stock nozzles are made out of brass, which contains lead |
Question: | Can this be wood stained |
Answer: | Yes it can be stained, must sand first. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought the rainbow filament and loving it, however I'm wondering if there are any tips on sanding/polishing to remove burrs and keep it smooth |
Answer: | I am no expert but in the couple of months since i started 3d printing i’ve Learned that sanding destroys the natural shine of the print at least with pla and if you do have to sand pla use the wet sand method as the friction will melt the pla and just make a mess. If you want to do a lot of sanding for finishing consider using abs as that can be sanded almost like wood with no problem. Now as far as the burs they sell bur knives on amazon that are the perfect shape for slicing the burrs off but in my own experience exactas aren’t thick enough and the bur knife is so specialized that it’s not very useful for anything else i’ve Had the best experience with a super cheap wood carving tool set from daiso they have very sharp strong steel blades with a wooden handle and they hav different shapes that i find very useful for cutting support i’ve Also heard it’s best to head the blades to help it melt thru rather than rip thru. Another tip would be to only allow support in the settings from the plate that way the support will come up from the plate to support but not grow out of the actual printed object avoiding the burrs and zits. As far as ensuring the longest survival in the greatest condition i would consider spray coating the print in a polyurethane spray maybe with a uv protectant and keep it dusted well. I hope that helps. |
Question: | What are your optimal settings for the rainbow pla filament 1.75 mm? retraction, speed, temp, cooling, etc |
Answer: | I have a glass plate covered in kapton/polyimide film that comes with my MakerGear M3. This seems to work well for most PLA. As for the rest I used the same settings I use for PLA. Temp: 215, Bed: 60, speed: 3500 mm/min, cooling after 1st layer, retraction: 2mm, nozzle: .35mm. These are all standard settings for my M3 |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the spool? Specifically, I'm interested in the spool's outside diameter, inside diameter,and Printing temperature |
Answer: | Spool Diameter: 7.76"" Spool Width: 2.52"" Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.24 "" Inner Circle Diameter: 3.5"". Printing temperature: 190--220℃. Hot bed temperature: 0-45℃ |

User questions & answers
Question: | What temperature should i print sunlu pla filament at |
Answer: | Depending on what printer you are using as well as what type of hot end in that printer. This is strictly a trial and error setting. The temp range (200 to 230) is your starting point. I run mine at 205. There again you may find that suitable or you may want to run slightly hotter. My suggestion is make something small to test. Print it at 200. then print it again at 205 etc. Find the best results then lock that temp in your slicer program for future prints. |
Question: | What temperature should i print sunlu 3d pla filament at |
Answer: | It depends on your printer since the location of the thermocouple in the hot-end will give slightly different readings on different machines. On my MakerGear M2, I print all PLA filaments, including this one, at 215c with excellent results. |
Question: | How should print settings be adjusted for sunlu pla+ filament compared to regular sunlu pla 1.75mm |
Answer: | I had many issues with printing with this filament on my Ender-5. My heat towers were great up and down and so I initially selected a temp of 210C down to 200C and a bed temp of 45. I had ok adhesion but many prints would slip on the bed after a few hours printing or larger prints would lift from the bed. I eventually came across some users reporting that 228C hotend and 80C bed was working and so I gave it a try. Now I have this filament printing great and very few issues. Because of the increased bed temp it is important to reduce any drafts near the printer as rapid cooling can cause the print to warp and lift. I have experienced this once in the last 15-20 prints since I upped the bed temp compared to most other prints larger than 2x2 inches at 45C. |
Question: | Is this pla plus 3d printer filament sunlu brand? what's the warranty teams |
Answer: | Yes,it's SUNLU Offical Brand,all 3D Printer filament offer 1 years warranty.They have PLA+,PLA,ABS,TPU,PETG,WOOD,Carbon Fiber,Rainbow filament. |

Question: | What is the difference between "Real gold" and "Shining Gold |
Answer: | thank you for your interest. the "REAL GOLD" has a natural metallic color and luster but it does not have shining flecks; the "SHINING GOLD" is slightly translucent and has properly sized flecks of ultra-bright gold glitter |
Question: | is the color changing filament food safe |
Answer: | I am not 100% sure, but what I have read, NO PLA filament (glow or not) is food, microwave/freezer or even outdoor safe (melts). It will have lead from the nozzle & other contaminants that would leak to food |
Product description
Wood PLA is a special PLA filament:
1.It is easy to cause nozzle clog because of high temperature carbonization;
2.It is easy to cause nozzle clog if the temp too low to melting wood PLA;
3.Wood PLA is a special PLA filament which is easy to produce strings during the printing process;
4.Another feature of wood PLA is abrasive - like sand paper.
Some suggestion for Eryone wood PLA based on above information.
For reducing strings:
1. Choosing a lower printing temp in the right temp range at which we can print normally;
2. The right retraction can help us to reduce these strings.
3. Of course, some appropriate model files can also help us to avoid some strings.
4. A hardened nozzle is the better choice when you use wood PLA.
Note:
For original Prusa 3D printer users,
the recommended temp is:
200℃ for extruder,
65℃ for heat bed.
Technical specification:
Diameter: 1.75 mm
Tolerance: +/-0.03mm
Print Temperature: 190℃ - 220℃ (374℉ - 428℉)
Recommended print speed: 50-100 mm/s
Tips for use and storage:
1. If you are going to leave your printer inactive for more than a couple of days, please retract the filament to protect your printer nozzle.
2. In order to extend the life of your filament, please store it in a dry, sealed bag or box. Preferably, add a packet of Silica Gel to absorb any excess moisture.
3. When storing your filament, please feed the loose end through the holes on the edge of the filament reel to avoid winding, so that it feeds properly when you use it next time.

User questions & answers
Question: | I will need hardened steel nozzles for flow in the dark, correct |
Answer: | You can use the traditional brass 0.4 nozzles, but any filaments with infused particles will wear the nozzle down over time. Hardened steel will not really wear down so it's commonly suggested, but not mandatory. There are cheap (10-12$) nozzle packs that have both 0.4 hardened steal and 0.6 brass nozzles that are both better alternatives to prevent wear down and clogging. |
Question: | Do you have a version of glow in the dark filament that is orange color in sunlight |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Why wont my red glow in the dark filament glow? Like I get 0 glow from it. I kinda just looks like glass |
Answer: | It does not glow on its own. It has to be "charged" by sitting under UV light (best results) or any other light source for a period of time. |
Question: | Why does the search description say that this is tpu, but when you open the product page where i am typing this, it shows that it is pla |
Answer: | Dear customer, Thank you for your question. The glow filament is PLA, not TPU. If you want TPU filament, please check the link below: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074RGKBT4 We have yellow, red and white available on Amazon now. Have a nice day. Sincerely, Amolen tech |

Tips:
Why Can't Print Wood Filaments as Easy as Normal PLA?
1). Check Temperature Setting Before Printing, Due to the addition of wood fill, the fluidity of WOOD PLA is weaker than ordinary PLA, so it needs a lower temperature, preferably between 185 and 190 ℃(365~374℉);
2). Check if 3D Printer Nozzle Has Been Used for a Long Time, It's Recommended to Replace a New Nozzle, which Diameter Recommended 0.4mm+;
