12 best grinding wheels for bench grinders
Grinding wheels for bench grinders are essential tools in metalworking and woodworking shops. They are abrasive wheels designed for use with bench grinders, which are stationary power tools used for various tasks such as sharpening, shaping, deburring, and polishing. Here's what you should know about grinding wheels for bench grinders:
Composition: Grinding wheels consist of abrasive particles bonded together with a binder. Common abrasive materials include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and ceramic. The choice of abrasive material depends on the specific application and the type of material you are working with.
Wheel Types: There are various types of grinding wheels available for bench grinders, each designed for specific tasks. Some common types include:
Aluminum Oxide Wheels: These are general-purpose wheels suitable for grinding and sharpening a wide range of materials, including steel, iron, and non-ferrous metals.
Silicon Carbide Wheels: These wheels are often used for grinding non-ferrous metals and materials like stone, glass, and ceramics.
Ceramic Wheels: Ceramic wheels are known for their exceptional durability and heat resistance. They are ideal for high-speed and heavy-duty grinding applications.
Grit Size: Grinding wheels come in various grit sizes, which determine the coarseness or fineness of the abrasive particles. Coarse grits are suitable for rapid material removal, while finer grits are used for precision grinding and polishing.
Wheel Dimensions: Grinding wheels are available in different dimensions, including diameter and thickness. The choice of wheel size depends on the specific bench grinder's capacity and the type of work you intend to perform.
Wheel Balancing: Properly balanced grinding wheels are essential for smooth and safe operation. Imbalanced wheels can cause vibration and lead to uneven grinding. Many bench grinders have built-in wheel balancing features.
Safety: When using grinding wheels for bench grinders, it's crucial to wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses or goggles, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Follow safety guidelines and avoid excessive pressure on the wheel, as it can lead to overheating and premature wear.
Dressing the Wheel: Over time, grinding wheels can become loaded with metal particles and lose their cutting effectiveness. Dressing the wheel using a dressing tool removes these particles and restores the wheel's sharpness.
Coolant or Lubrication: In some cases, it may be necessary to use a coolant or lubricant to prevent overheating and to improve the finish when grinding certain materials.
Storage: Properly store grinding wheels in a dry and cool environment to prevent moisture absorption and maintain their integrity.
In summary, grinding wheels for bench grinders are abrasive tools used for cutting, shaping, and polishing various materials. Selecting the right type, size, and grit of grinding wheel is crucial for achieving the desired results and ensuring safe operation on a bench grinder. Always follow safety precautions when using these tools to prevent accidents and injuries.

Question: | Has anyone used this on a central machinery (harbor freight) bench grinder? Does it fit the arbor and does it cut down some of the vibration? Thanks |
Answer: | The one I bpught is 150 grit. 60 is available but too rough for lathe tools. 60 is more for rotary lawn mowers, dressing struck tools, etc. |
Question: | Would this work wih Dewalt 8" bench grinder |

Question: | Can you remove the arbor bushing to make this a 1 inch through hole |
Answer: | Silicone Carbide wheels are used to sharpen Brazed Carbide Tools (That's what I use them for), not for general steel use as stated in the description of the product. It is a relatively "Soft" stone. Hope that helps you out. |
Question: | Would this be considered a fine grit for grinding/sharpening lathe tools? What grit is medium for that purpose |
Answer: | No, assuming the circular saw blade is carbide tipped you would need a diamond wheel. Also, circular saw blades are cheap enough to make it not even slightly worth it to try resharpening them. The angles they are sharpened at are very specific. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The grinding wheel? 8"x 3/4"? I need 8"x1" wideth does anyone know |
Answer: | The DW758 8'' Bench Grinder comes with and is used with 1'' wheels. |
Question: | Is the tool rest adjustable to any angle |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | What is the size of the retaining nut that secures the grinding wheels on this unit? 1" is too small. 1-1/16" too big. Is it metric |
Answer: | 1 1/16 socket will work if you don’t have 26mm |
Question: | I'm confused by the claim this grinder 3/4 horse power. A 4.4 amp,120vac induction motor is 1/6 hp per various engineering charts and 3/4 hp 13 amps |
Answer: | Nameplate says 120 volts 4.2 amps when multiplied, it equals 504 watts. One HP is equal to 746 watts by definition. If it was 100% efficient, which is not possible by the Laws of Physics, it would be 504 divided by 746 or .676 HP. Since most motors are only 90% efficient, that would be .676 times .9 = .608 HP. That is between 1/2 and 5/8 HP. Typical of inflated claims by manufacturers. --Master Electrician-- |

User questions & answers
Question: | What could i use ro cut this in half? Would a hacksaw work |
Answer: | This wheel does not have an arbor bushing. It goes directly on the arbor. |
Question: | Does this come with the reducer for 1/2" arbor |
Answer: | Every turner has their preferences. I've been doing it for 12+ years. To me, 120 is a relatively fine grit, 80 is medium, and of course 60 to 40 is real coarse. I only use the 60 or coarser if I goof up the edge on a tool and it needs a little reshaping. Whether the wheel is rated as a wet wheel or not, I still spray the tool with water while sharpening. The less heat on the tool the better. Just like the slower the rpm you turn at the better it is for the tool edge. |
Question: | Any to fit 3” mini bench grinders |
Answer: | This wheel is a deburring wheel that will operate in a similar fashion to the Scotch Brite Wheel. Our offering answers all metal removal, deburring, shaping and sharpening needs: white aluminum oxide for high-speed tool steels, brown aluminum oxide for carbon steel, and silicon carbide for non-ferrous metals and carbide tooling. |
Question: | Does this package contain an adapter so i can us the wheel on my 1/2" arbor grinder |
Answer: | 4,140 RPM |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the grit size of this stick? Or can you give me the norton part number to look it up |
Answer: | Diamond harder than this stone. It will not cut diamond. Clean diamond with Windex and brush. |
Question: | Has anyone used this on a flat lap diamond wheel |
Answer: | It's medium grit. |
Question: | What is the grit of this dressing stick? Norton silicon carbide in 6 grades |
Answer: | Dressing an abrasive grinding wheel is its only purpose. I would suppose it will dress a chainsaw sharpener depending on how small the space is. The dressing stick has to fit within the available space in order to contact the chainsaw sharpeners grinding wheel. |
Question: | Will this work to dress a grinding wheel on a chainsaw sharpener |
Answer: | Oh no, not to repair the wheel. Yes to dress it. I have a skate sharpener and I dress the stone after every few pairs of skates. Otherwise I don't get a perfect edge. Those hockey players are very fussy about their skates. |
