13 best bench grinder wire wheel
A bench grinder wire wheel is an abrasive tool used in conjunction with a bench grinder. It is designed for various tasks related to cleaning, deburring, polishing, and surface preparation in metalworking and other applications. Here are some key aspects of a bench grinder wire wheel:
Wire Brush Composition: The wire wheel consists of a set of wire bristles or filaments that are typically made of steel or other durable materials. These wire filaments are twisted together and attached to a central hub.
Cleaning and Deburring: One of the primary functions of a bench grinder wire wheel is to remove rust, corrosion, paint, scale, and other contaminants from metal surfaces. It is also useful for deburring sharp edges on metal parts.
Polishing: Depending on the wire wheel's design and the type of wire filaments used, it can be employed for light polishing of metal surfaces. It helps achieve a smoother and shinier finish.
Surface Preparation: Before welding, painting, or applying coatings to metal surfaces, a wire wheel can be used to prepare the surface by removing any unwanted materials or imperfections.
Types of Wire Wheels: There are various types of wire wheels available, including crimped wire wheels, knotted wire wheels, and twisted wire wheels. Each type has unique characteristics suitable for different applications. Crimped wire wheels are often used for lighter tasks, while knotted wire wheels are more aggressive and suitable for heavy-duty applications.
Safety Precautions: When using a bench grinder wire wheel, it is essential to take safety precautions. Wear safety goggles, gloves, and appropriate protective clothing to shield against flying debris and wire filaments. Additionally, ensure that the wire wheel is securely mounted on the bench grinder.
Speed and Direction: Bench grinders often have variable speed settings, and it's crucial to select the appropriate speed for the specific task. The direction of rotation of the wire wheel also matters, as it can affect the efficiency of cleaning or polishing.
Maintenance: Regularly inspect the wire wheel for wear and damage. Replace it if you notice broken or worn-out wire filaments. Proper maintenance ensures consistent and safe performance.
Workspace Setup: Securely mount the bench grinder wire wheel to a workbench or suitable surface. Ensure that the grinder is stable and that there is adequate workspace for your tasks.
In summary, a bench grinder wire wheel is a versatile abrasive tool used for cleaning, deburring, polishing, and surface preparation in metalworking and other industrial applications. It is available in different types to suit various tasks, and safety precautions should always be followed when using it. Regular maintenance ensures its effectiveness and longevity.

User questions & answers
Question: | arbor size |
Answer: | Hole size is 1/2" w bushing to go to 5/8". Need to find a larger wheel for 3/4" opening. |
Question: | What is the size of the hole? Will it fit on a 3/4" shaft |
Answer: | The width (of wire portion of brush) is 7/8" wide. The arbor is 3/4" wide; that is the outside edge to outside edge, not the size of the arbor hole itself. Hope this answered your question! |
Question: | does anyone know how wide this wire brush wheel is? Is it |
Answer: | It's 6 inches. You can usually figure out what size something is by looking in the technical details. I bought this wire wheel and it works fine. Another place to check for size is customer reviews. Chances are someone else noticed a lack of information and provided it in their review. |
Question: | Why don't they even tell you what size wire wheel is? It's like ordering shoes without being able to specify the size |
Answer: | Silicone Carbide wheels are used to sharpen Brazed Carbide Tools (That's what I use them for), not for general steel use as stated in the description of the product. It is a relatively "Soft" stone. Hope that helps you out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the thickness of the wires? Needing 1 1/2 or |
Answer: | It will if it has a adjustable chuck like a drill. But also dont for get to wear safety gear while using them that way. Preferably a face shield and gloves. Some times wires fly loose and stick you in flight. |
Question: | Anybody knows how to measure a wire wheel I need 8"x5/8"x |
Answer: | If the bumpy concrete is on the cast steel, the brush can work, but the lifetime of the wire will vary with the hardness of the concrete. If it is on the concrete, I don't recommend it. |
Question: | Are different wire material like steel, copper, stainless available |
Answer: | I used two of these to take paint off metal patio furniture and they worked great. I didn't try it on cement. They are strong and fit my drill very well. |
Question: | On product dimension, what is being measured? 8.4 x 1.2 x 9.5 What are these dimensions |
Answer: | The biggest problem with this and all brushes that thread onto a 5/8 arbor is that most 15/16ths wrenches are too thick to slip in around the nut. I solved the problem by cutting a piece of 1/4" thick 1-1/2" steel bar, cutting a 15/16" slot and welding it to the end of my spanner wrench to my angle grinder. Works great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The grinding wheel? 8"x 3/4"? I need 8"x1" wideth does anyone know |
Answer: | The DW758 8'' Bench Grinder comes with and is used with 1'' wheels. |
Question: | Is the tool rest adjustable to any angle |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | What is the size of the retaining nut that secures the grinding wheels on this unit? 1" is too small. 1-1/16" too big. Is it metric |
Answer: | 1 1/16 socket will work if you don’t have 26mm |
Question: | I'm confused by the claim this grinder 3/4 horse power. A 4.4 amp,120vac induction motor is 1/6 hp per various engineering charts and 3/4 hp 13 amps |
Answer: | Nameplate says 120 volts 4.2 amps when multiplied, it equals 504 watts. One HP is equal to 746 watts by definition. If it was 100% efficient, which is not possible by the Laws of Physics, it would be 504 divided by 746 or .676 HP. Since most motors are only 90% efficient, that would be .676 times .9 = .608 HP. That is between 1/2 and 5/8 HP. Typical of inflated claims by manufacturers. --Master Electrician-- |

User questions & answers
Question: | How wide is this wheel? I am looking for a 6" wire wheel that is 3/8" wide or less |
Answer: | This is an interesting issue. Please call our customer service team so we can figure out what is going on here. Forney customer service: 1-800-521-6038. Thank you. |
Question: | I bought this grinder with the wire wheel combo. I can’t ge the wire wheel to fit. It doesn’t seem to to be thick enough on the axle. hoe |
Answer: | I do not know how many wires this wheel brush has but by looking at the Forney web site this wheel has .008" wire size which seems to be the finest size they make. |
Question: | How many bristles does this brush have? Needing one with about |
Answer: | When I opened the package, I did not see the reducing bushing. I thought it fell out somewhere on the ground where I opened the package. When I installed this wheel on my 1/2 inch shaft grinder, it fit just fine. After 10 minutes of use, my grinder stopped working. I finally realized that the 1/2" to 5/8" reducing bushing was installed and is made out of plastic. It split and was the cause of my problem. I do not suggest using this wheel on a 1/2 inch shaft. Grinders can be dangerous if used improperly, this is not something to take lightly. |
Question: | Please explain "with 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch arbor". i am looking for a grinder that fits 1/2 inch arbor. thanks |
Answer: | Yes, the polishing wheel with 1/2 arbor hole can be used for 5/8 Arbor, but it have a little difficult to install and will be tight,we have 8 inches polishing wheel with 5/8 arbor hole fit better for your needs(Asin:B07DL8KS31) |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is differences/advantages for a variable speed verses a slow speed |
Answer: | The advantage to having a variable speed is two fold: The slower speed is generally used for sharpening and honing while the higher speed is for removing material faster and buffing/polishing with a polishing wheel or wire wheel. The slower speed creates less friction and therefore less heat while the higher speed (with a grinding wheel) creates more heat. |
Question: | what is the arber size for 8 inch grinder |
Answer: | 5/8 |
Question: | How much HP |
Answer: | 5 amps x 115 volts = 575 watts. 1 hp is around 745 watts, so it works out to be a bit more than 3/4 hp. |
Question: | My grinder did not come with the wheel removal tool as it was susposed to. Will someone tell me what size it is so I can remove the bent stone |
Answer: | The stone isn't bent, its the mandrel washers that are on both side of the wheel that are not true. Mine are the same way. I tried to contact WEN, never got a response |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the thickness of this wheel |
Answer: | .014 WIRE -- MED/FINE |
Question: | Is this wire wheel coarse or fine |
Answer: | It is nominally 1" wide as advertised. However, in reality it is more like 1-1/4" because a generous portion of the wires tend to flare out at the outside diameter, more so after it has been used a little bit due to reasonable pressure being put on the wheel by the item being brushed. If your concern is whether it is actually 1" wide and not skimpy, well it is not skimpy and is a good 1" wide. However, if your concern has to do with the available width in your grinder/wire-brush machine's semi-enclosed wheel housing, be advised that I would recommend at least a 1-1/2" width available inside the enclosure for the wheel to run in, 1-1/4" being bare minimum. On a related matter I would like to add that the wheel is not as well balanced as my old one was and I had to place rubber pads under my grinder's pedastel feet to keep it from gradually walking on my garage floor, which solved the problem. But with 7" wire wheels hard to find, I would purchase this again. It does a nice job. I hope this is helpful. |
Question: | how wide is the face of this wheel |
Answer: | The one I received was a Weiler part number 06655 - 7" wheel with a 5/8 center hole. |
Question: | Would like to confirm manufacturer and model number of wire brush |
Answer: | China |

Weiler Knows Power Brushes
At Weiler, we know a thing or two about power brushes. Weiler is a family owned company that makes our power brushes right here in the USA at our factory in Cresco, PA.
Weiler manufactures a full line of power brushes for industrial, fabrication, MRO, and DIY applications. Whatever your need, Weiler has you covered.
To see our full product selection, please click on the Weiler link at the top of this page to visit our brand store. There you will see our full offering of:
CRIMPED WIRE BRUSHES:
- Greater flexibility for light/medium duty applications.
- Use on parts that could be damaged by the impact of a knot brush.
- Use for a broad range of applications.
KNOT WIRE BRUSHES:
- Straight wire filaments that are twisted as a single unit like a piece of cable or wire rope.
- Provide less flexibility and more aggressive brushing action in heavy-duty applications.
- Use on parts requiring high-impact action.
- Use to remove large burrs and heavy contamination, such as multiple layers of rust, scale, paint or oxides.
WEILER’S SOLID RING CONSTRUCTION
Our crimped wire brushes are constructed using solid rings to retain the fill material and our manufacturing process results in an even, consistent distribution of wire strands around the entire brush diameter. This ensures that our crimped wire products run smoother and last longer, even in the toughest applications.
WEILER'S INDIVIDUAL KNOT HOLE CONSTRUCTION
Weiler’s knot wheels are constructed with an internal steel plate that has equally spaced individual holes around the perimeter. Wire is inserted through each hole and twisted into a knot. Each hole has precisely the same wire count, thereby assuring perfect balance. This eliminates vibration, reduces operator fatigue and increases brush life.
STANDARD KNOT TWIST
Provides some flexibility for use on irregular surfaces. Sharp wire tips make this knot aggressive right from the start.
CABLE KNOT TWIST
Provides very aggressive brushing action. Sharp wire tips make this knot aggressive right from the start.
LONG TRIM, LOW DENSITY BRUSHES
- Flexibility that is ideal for applications such as cleaning surfaces that are somewhat irregular
- Lower fill density can result in shorter brush life and less consistent performance in production environments.
SHORT TRIM, HIGH DENSITY BRUSHES
- Less flexible and faster action requires less applied pressure
- Consistent performance and longer life
