You would want to make sure that there are not any obstacles or anything that would interfere with the Roomba in that area. Answer:	The Roomba 981 would not be able to be programmed to avoid specific areas. You would, however, be able to use a Dual Mode Virtual Wall. This accessory would emit Infrared beams that would keep the Roomba away from specific areas.
Question:	Will this work on shag area rug
Answer:	Roomba's are built to be able to clean and move back and forth over many different kinds of surfaces. The Robot has a 5/8" clearance that allows it to traverse most thresholds, rugs and carpets up to that height. If the Rug were deeper than 5/8" the Robot may not be able to clean it as effectively as a more shallow pile rug.
