Question:	The owners manual states to use "precooked or processed" turkey when making turkey jerky to avoid harmful bacteria. Has anyone used raw turkey
Answer:	This dehydrator only goes to 160 °F. USDA says poultry needs to be taken to 165 °F to kill the bacteria. From USDA"Why is it a food safety concern to dry meat without first heating it to 160 °F? The danger in dehydrating meat and poultry without cooking it to a safe temperature first is that the appliance will not heat the meat to 160 °F and poultry to 165 °F — temperatures at which bacteria are destroyed — before the dehydrating process. After drying, bacteria become much more heat resistant."
Question:	Is this loud or quiet? I had one before and the loudness drove me nuts to where I couldn't use it
Answer:	It makes a nice background white noise that you could use to help you fall asleep. If you want to set it on the kitchen table between yourself and someone else you're trying to have a conversation with, it is too loud for that. I don't think it was your food dehydrator that drove you nuts. ;)

Question:	Can this dehydrator be used to dry homemade cerael
Answer:	First of all, try to avoid reoccurrence of this situation by lining the bottom of the dehydrator with aluminum foil prior to use. Be careful not to block air flow. To clean greasy residue... I have found nothing better on the market than a product named "Greased Lightning". It will melt the grease and you can wipe it out with paper towel. Greased Lightning can be found in many Dollar Stores. U won't believe how good this stuff cleans.
Question:	Does this unit come with everything I need to dehydrate food? Or do I need to buy trays or whatever
Answer:	I JUST called the customer service line and found out that all Presto dehydrators are now BPA free. Prior to the 43rd week of 2015, the parts that contained BPA were the cover over the indicator light and a part in the motor.
Question:	can you make jerky
Answer:	I usually take about 6 medium size chicken breasts - approx. 3 pounds - and freeze them until they are stiff but not frozen solid. Then I slice them into about 1/4 inch strips and lay them out on the racks. That amount pretty much fills all 6 racks. Then I set the temperature to 160 and cook for 8 hours. They are still slightly frozen when I start. After 8 hours I take it out of the dehydrator, heat up the oven to 275, put all of the chicken in a metal cake pan lined with aluminum foil and bake for about 10 minutes. This seems to help "crisp" it up a bit and makes is so that it stays fresh a little longer. I know it seems like a lot of work, but both of my dogs are absolutely crazy about it (we call it "puppy crack") and it will last about 2-3 weeks if you break the pieces into smaller bites for each treat - about 3-4 times a day for both dogs.Hope this helped!

Answer:	No timer or power switch. Just a temperature control. To time it, you would need an external timer switch rated for at least 700 watts -- the power rating on the heater/blower unit. The timer will need a three-prong (grounded) outlet, as well. One listed on Amazon is the "Woods 50009 Indoor 7-Day Heavy Duty Digital Outlet Timer with 2-Outlets."
Question:	My heating element no longer works..can it be replaced
Answer:	Beware! I replaced the fuse and seemed to work fine but found out the thermostat no longer kept the temperature that it was set at. It never cooled down and was not able to be regulated any more. It started to melt my trays and made them mis-shapened before I caught what was happening. Just an FYI for all us "do it your selfers" ou there! (Nesco Gardenmaster Dehydrator)

Answer:	I used it only to make a single poached egg. It works fine for that purpose in a microwave from 30 to 40 seconds depending on the strength of your microwave and your tastes. I have doubts about using it for a muffin or anything else but I haven’t tried.

Answer:	I have the Nesco FD-1040 and purchased Nesco TR-2 add-a-tray and Nesco SLD-2-6 fruit rollup trays on Amazon. They look and fit like the ones delivered with the unit. I went to the Nesco web site to purchase the herb drying screens and to verify the fit of trays I bought on Amazon.
Question:	Which Nesco dehydrators have temperature control an automatic shut off
Answer:	We have a decibel reader, it was at 72 decibels. I was talking loud apparently at 70. A vacuum cleaner is at 80. So somewhere between your loud aunt and a vacuum cleaner. We had it on our kitchen counter, it reminded me of a white noise maker.

Question:	is it made in the usa
Answer:	It makes excellent jerky. Instructions are included about jerky but we found our favorite marinade on line. Most jerky has salt in it as part of the curing. My recipe uses soy sauce. It must be cut in strips 1/4 inch thick or less. Time consuming but worth it. I do 20 pounds of meat at a time and it lasts 6 months without spoiling. Just be sure it's dry and look out for fatty deposits.

Answer:	The entire device is 14" in diameter and 8" tall. Each tray is 14" in diameter by about 1.5" tall.

Answer:	The trays are made from good quality plastic.

Answer:	I used a ThermoPop stuck in the middle vertically from the side, it takes a while to stabilize and get an accurate reading because it draws air from the sides. But it settles in around 140-145.

Answer:	Temperature can be set from 100 F to 160 F.

Answer:	You do not have to have food on all trays but you need all trays stacked on the machine while drying foods. Right now I have 4 filled trays and 1 empty tray running. If I had planned better I would have had all 5 trays filled to make better use of the energy.

Answer:	I don't know the actual height but it comes with 4 trays. However each tray is approximately 1 inch tall. We have used our Hamilton Beach dehydrator with great success. Also good instruction booklet with receipts

Question:	i have a stack of trays from my original nesco from years ago. i measure them at slightly over 15 inches. will these trays fit this model
Answer:	I can't see why not. They're pretty easy to twist, bend, unwind, etc. Would think they'd be reasonable to cut

Answer:	I love these!! I have an "Egg" BBQ I use them in a firestarter( "Chimney) Bought on Amazon (looks like a coffee can with a handle. I put some charcoal in then separate a fire starter in a few pieces, put them in add more charcoal then a few more pieces, and then stick a few pieces around the top. Lighting them as I go. You will have a perfect fire in about 20-25 minutes. empty the chimney into the BBQ spread them around add the grill top and put on the steaks!!

Answer:	There is no short side. The item is round and measures 4 1/2" diameter with out the handle.

Answer:	You can get the instructions from the OXO site. My experience has been you have to adjust the timing per what you are putting in the cooker. Size and number of the eggs (one or two), your microwave settings. If you added ingredients, that will impact the timing. Just two large eggs with nothing else, 1m 45s, in my microwave. But certainly different in another system.

Answer:	no auto shut off (usually takes about 3.5 to 4 hrs) , temp is adjustable but usually kept on the max of 165 degrees

Tips on making jerky

Your meat should be as lean as possible. Using lean meat will help the meat dry faster and aid in cleanup by decreasing fat drippings. Ground beef should be 80% to 90% lean. Ground turkey, venison, buffalo and elk are other excellent choices for jerky.

Your jerky gun has NESCO/American Harvest seasonings included and are available commercially for all tastes. Whenever you make jerky, be sure to use the cure (sodium nitrite). The cure is used to help prevent botulism during drying at low temperatures.

Keep meat and poultry refrigerated at 40°F (5°C) or slightly below; use or freeze ground beef and poultry within 2 days; whole red meats, within 3 to 5 days. Defrost frozen meat in the refrigerator, not on the kitchen counter.

Special considerations must be made when using venison or other wild game, since it can become heavily contaminated during field dressing. Venison is often held at temperatures that could potentially allow bacteria to grow, such as when it is being transported. Refer to the USDA Meat and Poultry Department for further questions or information on meat and food safety.

Dry meat at 160°F (71C) until desired doneness. Drying times may vary based on many circumstances including but not limited to: the relative humidity of the room, the temperature of the meat at beginning of drying process, the amount of meat in the dehydrator, leanness of meat, etc. Always allow jerky to cool before taste testing.
