Answer:	Typical of many small appliances, when brand new they emit an odor as result of dust, etc burning off the coils... This smell can be plastic-like and is unpleasant but not generally harmful. I always darkly toast a few 'throw away' slices of bread when first getting a new toaster--then toast the ones planned to eat. The toast should have no metallic or plastic taste to it then and the appliance's odor should fade to nothing within a weeks daily use or so. If not, definitely return it to manufacturers!!

Answer:	Agreed. Wasted time and money researching a good toaster that only toasts one side when bagel setting is selected. It toasts both side equally when on TOAST setting and toasts both side equally when on BAGEL setting. Bagel setting reduces darkness of toast by approximately 1/2 setting. Piece of crap if looking to toast bagels as I was. I have no idea why a bagel setting would toast both sides - pointless and deceptive marketing. Anyone know of a toaster that does a good job of toasting only one side of bagels, English muffins, etc.?

Make sure to put it on the setting you want though, because if i use the lowest setting for bagels-which is not enough-and then put it in for a second cycle, it will burn. Put it on the number that matches how dark you like your bagel, push down the lever, select bagel, and one cycle does it. You will need more if your bagel is frozen before toasting. I have had this toaster for at least 10 years, if not longer, and mine does not have a defrost setting.

Answer:	The toaster is by default set on toast. Every time you are going to use the toaster for bagels, you have to press the bagel button to activate this function.
Question:	does this toaster have a retractable cord
Answer:	The slots on my toaster measure 5 and 1/4 inches long and 1and 6/16ths inches wide. I solved the problem of wide pan multi-grain breads by cutting the piece in half and using both slots. Worked for me because I was just making toast for breakfast anyway and did not need it to be in one piece.

Answer:	No, After the desired level of darkness has been reached, the food will pop up automatically. The Bread Carriage Lever will return to its original position and the indicator lights will turn off.
