Both use the lower opening that actually looks like it's part of the handle, right above the black comfort grips. I just tried them out again, and it does work. The Use the grip that best fits the jar: (1) small jars -- use the handle, (2) medium jars -- use inner grip of the head, (3) use outer grip of the head. Each grip has teeth that will hold onto the lid. Then, holding the jar still (with a hand or between the legs, whatever works!), turn the lid to loosen. Left to loosen; right to tighten. The farther back on the handle you grip, the better. Hope that helps!

Answer:	I just measured it. In the “relaxed mode” it measures 3 3/4” across. I call it the relaxed mode since it is where the opener starts when you place it around the lid, and then where it automatically returns when the lid opens.
