Borosilicate is much more stable and can take temp changes, but after 1995 manufacturers switched to soda lime, which is not as stable, to cut costs. That's why lots of people go to thrift stores for the old Pyrex and Corning Ware. The stuff they make now is not safe.

During the manufacturing they seal it with more glass. It's not perfectly smooth, but close. I think Bodum offers one with this type of seal over the manufacturing hole. I am sure others do as well. They will be more expensive for sure.
