13 best maple cutting

Maple cutting boards are a popular choice for kitchen enthusiasts and professional chefs due to their durability, attractive appearance, and functionality. Here's what you need to know about maple cutting boards and their relevance to cutlery knife accessories, kitchen dining, and home kitchens:

  1. Material: Maple cutting boards are typically made from hard maple wood, which is known for its strength and resistance to wear and tear. Hard maple is a durable wood that can withstand the impact of sharp knives without easily developing deep cuts and gouges.

  2. Durability: Maple cutting boards are long-lasting and can withstand heavy use over time. With proper care and maintenance, they can remain in excellent condition for many years.

  3. Knife-Friendly: Maple wood is considered knife-friendly because it is less likely to dull your knives compared to harder materials like glass or stone. The slight softness of maple helps preserve the sharpness of your knives.

  4. Attractive Appearance: Maple has a light, creamy color with a fine grain pattern, making it an aesthetically pleasing addition to any kitchen. Its natural beauty can enhance your kitchen's visual appeal.

  5. Maintenance: To keep maple cutting boards in good condition, it's essential to clean them thoroughly after each use with mild soap and warm water. It's advisable to oil them occasionally with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to maintain their appearance and prevent them from drying out or cracking.

  6. Size and Thickness: Maple cutting boards come in various sizes and thicknesses to suit different culinary needs.Larger boards provide ample workspace for chopping, slicing, and dicing, while thicker boards offer extra durability.

  7. Versatility: Maple cutting boards are versatile and can be used for various food preparation tasks, such as chopping vegetables, carving meats, and even serving cheeses and charcuterie.

  8. Hygienic: Wood has natural antimicrobial properties that can help inhibit the growth of bacteria. However, it's still essential to clean and maintain your cutting board properly to ensure food safety.

In summary, maple cutting boards are a popular choice in kitchens due to their durability, knife-friendly nature, attractive appearance, and versatility. They are an essential tool for any cook or chef, providing a reliable surface for food preparation while protecting the longevity of your kitchen knives. Proper care and maintenance are key to ensuring their longevity and hygiene in your kitchen.

User questions & answers

Question: what is meant by maple wood edge grain? is the board made from just maple wood
Answer: Try putting it flat with heavy weights on it and the use a steamer (or a heat gun far away to not melt it) to slightly warm it up and keep doing it until the crease goes away mine came warped too Amazon should have replaced them!
Question: Ate your boards formaldehyde free
Answer: Not sure - suggest u email U.S. Supply
Question: Our board has a very strong, strange smell, does anyone know what causes this and if it will go away? It kind of smells like burnt rubber
Answer: I'm not familiar with those other mats but I have not had any major issues with the consistency of the markings. The mat itself however is marked weirdly - not standard length and width which can be confusing and it is wearing out quickly - I would not buy this brand again .
Question: I see references to "wax" in the reviews. Can anyone give me the actual name of the product? (NOTE: I already have the "Mystery Oil" in my cart
Answer: I have purchased two of these. One came flat, the other was rolled up. You can definitely roll it up for travel. Just may take it a while to flatten out completely. A cardboard tube would work great.

The History of John Boos & Co

In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. Word spread to surrounding small towns and cities and by 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, John Boos expanded their production and product range to include tables and workbenches, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and John Boos butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.

Committed to Environmental Integrity

John Boos’ Hardwood foresters follow professional best practices that mirror natural forces. Individual trees are selected for harvest, encouraging forests to renew and regenerate themselves naturally and prolifically. John Boos & Co. recycles 95% of all raw lumber scraps and sawdust which are used to generate electricity and create steam to fuel the boilers. John Boos sawdust is also recycled as livestock bedding for local agricultural needs.

Care and Maintenance

Keeping Your Board Sanitized:

Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water after each use and dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. For further sanitation, the board can be rinsed with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher.

Maintaining Your Board:

Oil your cutting board on all surfaces every 3-4 weeks to maintain the original Boos block cream finish with beeswax. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come. John Boos recommends using John Boos Mystery Oil and/or John Boos Block Cream. User questions & answers

Question: Is it made in the usa or is it made in china? the responses are very contradicting
Answer: Hello! Edge Grain means that the maple rails are laid down edges up (resulting in a linear pattern) during construction. The other type is "End Grain" meaning board pieces are laid on end. Thanks! John Boos and Co
Question: Is the maple end grain
Answer: Hello, Boos Boards and Blocks are formaldehyde free Thanks, John Boos and Co
Question: Can you provide more information about caring for the board? Does it come pre-seasoned and how often does it need to be conditioned
Answer: Hello Ms Wenzel, Well, we have to say you stumped us on this one! This board is made from Maple Wood with an all- natural oil finish. Have you owned the board for awhile? Did you purchase it from Amazon or from a third party seller here on Amazon? Have you used other oil products on it? We do know that when people use food based oils (coconut, olive oil- both not recommended), they could potentially go rancid, which would lead to an unpleasant smell. If that perhaps is the case, we recommend the following: Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water or rinse with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher. Use John Boos Mystery oil (sold here on Amazon) to moisturize and protect the board when it is dry. Repeat oil every month, or more often if the board is new or you live in a dry climate. These quick steps will ensure this board is a constant companion for years to come! Please do write us back if you have further questions. We are curious to hear about a resolution! Sincerely, John Boos and Co
Question: How deep is the juice groove around the edge
Answer: The actual name of the product is Boos Block Board Cream. It is marketed on the tube as, "Natural Moisturizer for All Types of Wood". The listed ingredients are Natural Unbleached Bee's Wax and Food Grade Mineral Oil. I use the product roughly once a week to moisturize the wood after first wiping the board down with a water soaked cloth. The entire board requires roughly one teaspoon of product on a cloth to moisturize the entire surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use a food-safe salad bowl varnish on this
Answer: Our maple board is USA made. Both our edge grain maple and end grain walnut board, which are listed on this page currently, have always been made locally and with high-grade and sustainably sourced wood. In the past, we did have an acacia board on this same page which is not made locally. We're a small, Los Angeles based business and really do appreciate your interest in our boards!
Question: If we designate one side for meats & other for vegetables how can we prevent the wood from wearing in one spot from overuse
Answer: This maple board is edge grain. This board is built extremely durable and has a smooth, buttery feel under a knife. It comes finished and ready to use. We offer two end grain boards, our Alfred Walnut Board and Artisan Teak Board.
Question: does the grain run length wise or vertically, assuming the longest sides of the rectangle are horizontal
Answer: Hi Abby, every board comes with detailed care instructions. We also send the instructions via email if you allow third-party seller emails. The board comes pre-seasoned and we recommend oiling the board once every 3 weeks. All our products include 1-year warranty. Thanks so much for considering our brand!
Question: I see a lot of reviews about cracking after a short period of time period what type of warranty does this product come with
Answer: Hi Roy, thanks for your interest in our Winsome Maple board. The juice groove is 1/4" in deep and holds a little over 3 oz of liquid. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

About John Boos

1887 - Founder Conrad Boos harvested Sycamore from wooded areas around Effingham, IL, processed it at his sawmill, and then brought it to his blacksmith shop for finishing. The first innovation was a sycamore tree placed on three legs to absorb the shock of the blacksmith's hammer against the anvil. When the local butcher saw and admired the innovation, he realized that he could use one in his meat market. So Conrad's son, John, adapted the idea and made him one.

2012 - John Boos & Co. celebrates serving our customers for 125 years and expands its markets for commercial and residential customers, and seizes new opportunities. Both wood and metal facilities reach milestones with production output. The company expanded with a move to a new corporate office of nearly 87,000 square feet combined with a new metal plant facility in Effingham, IL.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these carving boards pre-oiled at the factory
Answer: I don’t know but suggest you use the Boos oil. We have one and love using it. It is used daily for everything and simply oil it periodically.
Question: Will this hold juices from a 24 lb turkey
Answer: We've never had a problem with uneven wear on a cutting board. But, if becomes an issue, I imagine it can be sanded down. We reserve our wood cutting board for fruit and vegetables because of concerns about bacteria. For meat, you might want to consider a plastic board. A plastic board can also harbor bacteria but is amenable to being cleaned in a dishwasher or with soap and hot water. We put a few plastic bumpers on the bottom of the wood cutting board to prevent water buildup between the wood and the granite surface, as water between the wood and granite can result in a buildup of mildew and black mold (unless you religiously dry the underside after each use).
Question: Will this fit a 20 pound turkey
Answer: The grain runs length wise and yes the longest sides are horizontal
Question: Are both sides of the board indented? One side is completely flat like a regular cutting board, correct
Answer: The only warranty expressed or implied, is a 1-year guarantee against defect in workmanship and material. Thiswarranty doe not apply to damages which may result from neglect, accidental or intentional damage, exposureto extremes in temperature and humidity, and alteration or abuse of the product. Wood products ordered 'unfinished' do not come with a warranty. You must do as the others have suggested oil it often and you will not have any problems. Its starts to crack once it becomes to dry. So have to oil it regularly but not too often that will also mess the board up.

Premium Butcher Block

The Premium Butcher Bock is the choice of professionals, those who take their kitchen seriously and seek a gorgeous board. It's a great quality board that requires proper care. It's a charm to work with - whether you're cutting vegetables or meat. You will enjoy this reversible board's side handles. It's built with care by our team of woodcrafters from sustainably sourced hardwoods. The Butcher Block is great for those who love to chop, and it's a piece of art with its patterned design.

Northern Hardwood for Higher Hardness

WoodForChef uses Northern Hardwoods (hard maple, cherry, walnut, birch) as they make the best cutting boards because they are more durable. Northern Hardwoods have a higher hardness because they grow more slowly. They won't dull your knife like plastic and glass boards.

Wood that is too soft will be easily scratched and damaged. A good cutting board normally has a Janka hardness between 900 and 1500 (the closer to 1500, the better). Hard Maple has a hardness of 1450, Cherry of 995, Walnut of 1010, Bamboo of 1180, and Birch of 1260.

Easy to Work With

The Premium Butcher Block is for those who care for detail and professional performance. The board is a real piece of art with its patterned design that will make you proud, and impress your guests. The patterned design also contributes to make a more stable cutting board with its staggered glue joints. The board's design is a proof of our ultimate craftsmanship and attention to every detail. The end grain cutting board is the preferred choice among many professionals for its hard-wearing characteristics and traditional chopping block silhouette. It's built heavy and tough. You will enjoy this reversible board's side handles. It's built with care by our team of woodcrafters from sustainably sourced hardwoods. The Workhorse Premium is great for those that love to chop.

Premium Preseasoning with Beeswax

At WoodForChef, we choose the best for your board and that means extra care with a two-step preseasoning. First, we treat your board with a penetrating food-grade mineral (FDA) oil to fill in the pores and prevent the wood from drying out. Second, we apply a premium food-grade (FDA) beeswax that is translucent, has no odor or taste, and protects the wood surface.

The preseasoning also makes your board look awesome with a soft lustrous shine. We also believe the preseasoning will help you have a reference of what a well maintained WoodForChef board looks like.

Unique Character

Every tree is different and as such, every board has its own unique character.

HARD MAPLE : Is the go-to wood when it comes to wooden cutting boards. Maple's neutral color and subtle grain are a natural match for every kitchen. It provides an excellent cutting surface that holds well against daily chopping but doesn’t ruin a good cutting edge.

Face grain

Face grain is considered the most attractive because it shows the full fibers of the wood. Long, narrow slats are glued together at their shorter ends, with the grain running horizontally along the cutting board (similar to a wood tabletop or cupboard door). Face grain is the most affordable of all the grain constructions and that makes it a good starter board. It is easier to handle with its lighter weight. Face grain cutting boards will show knife marks faster than edge grain or end grain boards and are not recommended for heavy chopping use but it is the most affordable of the three.

Edge grain

Edge grain boards are tougher than face grain boards and will soak up less moisture since the grain of the wood is not exposed. We still recommend you oil it regularly, but it's not as demanding as end grain boards are. Edge grain boards are a great balance between performance and ease of maintenance. Edge grain cutting boards can be thicker than face grain, giving the board more weight and body. Edge grain is a step up in both quality. It is similar to face grain in construction, the grain runs horizontally, but uses the thicker sides, or, as we call it, the ''edge'' of the wood.

End grain

End grain cutting boards offer the best performance in its high durability and ability to hide knife marks. End grain patterns are unique, they have a one of a kind aspect. It is the preferred choice among many professionals for its hard-wearing characteristics and traditional chopping block silhouette. The knife’s edge essentially goes in between the fibers, and when the knife lifts, the fibers close right back up. This catch-and-release mechanism reduces the amount of scratches on the board and is also much gentler on knives. End grain boards require more maintenance than other board types.

Product Care

Your WoodForChef cutting board can be washed with hot soapy water after each use and dried with a clean towel or by air. For further cleaning, the board can be rinsed with white vinegar, lemon juice (5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) or a chlorine bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water). Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, WoodForChef boards are not intended for the dishwasher.

Maintaining Your Board:

Oil and wax your cutting board on all surfaces every 4 weeks to maintain the original cream finish. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it made in America
Answer: The key to maintaining these boards requires 1) don’t let water pool after using; 2) “a lot of oil” is not required—I used about two tablespoons with a paper towel, let sit for 30-60 minutes and remove excess; and 3) don’t allow water to pool under the board. I have two boards; the first one was purchased on Amazon a number of years ago. It’s a beautiful deep color (due to reqular oiling) and has no cracks or other problems.
Question: How much does it weigh
Answer: Wood is a natural product that is susceptible to seasonal expansion and contraction. When you make an end grain cutting board, you are typically using pieces of wood from many different trees, with different moisture levels and different age and grain patterns. The upshot here is that it shouldn't come as a shock when a board like this comes apart sometimes. The company should work with customers whose board comes apart and it sounds like they do. What people need to understand is that a cutting board may be perfect at the time it is sold, but when it gets to the customer's house it is in a new environment and it can and will move a bit. It's impossible for a company to "know" how a particular board will hold up after a few weeks of use. HAving said all that, if you are going to charge $200 for a cutting board, you dang well better make sure that any customer who experiences issues with a new board had better be taken care of with a prompt replacement. Just my $.02.

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the best oil you recommend
Answer: I use Boos Block Mystery Oil, and Boos Block Board Cream. They work great, and I absolutely love the Sonder Reversible Cutting Board!
Question: What's the best way to store this board
Answer: The best way to store this board, if you have the counter space, is standing up on your counter. You can lean it on a wall or on your backsplash. If you do not have the counter space to store it, it is very important to make sure you completely dry the board with a clean kitchen towel after washing and then let it air dry for a few hours prior to storing it inside a cabinet or pantry space. Because wood does absorb water and moisture, keeping it in an open area with airflow is best to make sure the board does not maintain any moisture which can lead to bacteria growth.
Question: Is this actually made in the U.S
Answer: This is made in China. I found it on alibaba for $12 each if you buy a pallet of 500. I doubt seller designed it unless designing it is by choosing it on alibaba and then put their logo on it. In fact, you can find all this seller's cutting boards on alibaba for $8-14 each on alibaba. There's nothing wrong with buying stuff from China and resell it because that's pretty much everything in the US. I just think marketing is a bit misleading because it makes you think you are getting something unique and made in the US. But it's really not and very easy to prove.
Question: How do you take care of it? All our wood boards in the past end up smelling overtime. Is there a good, non-toxic product to treat the wood
Answer: Hi Gabe! Thanks for your interest in our Motley Cutting Board. The board needs to be washed with soap and warm water after each use, then towel dried. You should also stand the board up to make sure it is evenly dried and no moisture is left sitting between the large cutting surface and your countertops. Lemon is also recommended to clean the with occasionally if you're using the board to prepare food with strong scents such as fish! Most importantly, all wood cutting boards will require regular oiling (we recommend a food grade mineral old). Regular oiling depends on how frequent you use the board. If you use the board several times a week, oiling once a month is highly recommended. If you use the board less then once every few months. Basically, as soon as your board looks dry, you should oil it! By the way, all of our products include step by step cleaning and care instructions and we're also very easy to reach should you have any questions after you purchase the board! We are a small Los Angeles business and we appreciate your interest and support! Thank you! - Tiffany, Co-Founder/Designer

Question: Is this board reversible? from john boos it days all cb series are non-reversible. thank you
Answer: This cutting board weighs 5.5 pounds
Question: Are there side handles carved in for carrying
Answer: Hello Miranda, This is a great question. Yes, this board is reversible. Both sides are totally flat/smooth and do not feature a juice groove. Integrated hand grips on either end make it easy to lift and move this board. It is part of the CCB collection, which features classic End Grain construction (resulting in the "checkerboard" look of the board), and is a real showstopper. If you are looking for a Boos Block that also 20 inches long/15 inches wide and features a integrated juice groove- cop/paste this link into your browser search bar: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-Cutting-Groove-15-Inch/dp/B00LCAC0A0/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446709&s=gateway&sr=8-16 Another option: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-CB1054-1M2015150-Cutting-Inches/dp/B07FGL9ZFY/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446769&s=gateway&sr=8-3 A larger option to consider is a 2.25 inch thick board that is 24 x18 inches and features a juice groove: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-Reversible-Cutting-Handles/dp/B000P7DMYE/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446769&s=gateway&sr=8-12 Hope this helps you on your shopping journey! Thanks, John Boos and Co
Question: How deep is the juice groove in this board
Answer: No. Maybe after you first get it because there’s no oil on it at all but after a while you won’t have to. A few other things that are probably obvious but worth mentioning are that you should wash by hand and dry immediately. Don’t soak it or let it stand on its side (in a sink, for example) when wet b/c it will warp and then not lay flat. Last thing...if you’re using it as a charcuterie board, I recommend putting wax paper under the cured meats and cheese so that the oils from the meat and funk from the cheese doesn’t get into the grain of the wood. It’s really a great board!
