13 best cast iron oils
Cast iron oil, also known as seasoning oil, is a specific type of oil used for maintaining and seasoning cast iron cookware. Cast iron cookware, such as skillets and Dutch ovens, requires a layer of seasoning to prevent rusting, improve non-stick properties, and enhance the flavor of food. Cast iron oil is an essential accessory for anyone who owns and cooks with cast iron cookware. Here's what you need to know about cast iron oil:
Purpose of Cast Iron Oil: Cast iron oil is primarily used for seasoning cast iron cookware. Seasoning involves applying a thin layer of oil to the surface of the cookware and heating it to create a polymerized layer that provides a natural non-stick surface and protects the iron from rust and corrosion.
Types of Oils: Various types of oils can be used for seasoning cast iron, but the most commonly recommended oils are those with a high smoke point and low levels of unsaturated fats. Examples include vegetable oil, canola oil, grapeseed oil, flaxseed oil, and specially formulated cast iron seasoning oils.
Specially Formulated Cast Iron Oils: Some companies produce cast iron seasoning oils that are specifically designed for use with cast iron cookware. These oils often contain a blend of high-smoke-point oils and are sometimes enriched with antioxidants for improved protection against oxidation.
Application: To season cast iron cookware, apply a small amount of cast iron oil to the cooking surface using a cloth or paper towel. Ensure that the oil is evenly distributed across the entire surface, including the interior and exterior of the cookware.
Baking or Heating: After applying the oil, the cookware is typically heated in an oven. This process allows the oil to polymerize and form a protective layer. The exact temperature and duration of heating may vary depending on the type of oil and personal preferences but generally involves heating between 350°F to 450°F (175°C to 230°C) for an hour or more.
Maintenance: Cast iron cookware should be re-seasoned periodically to maintain its non-stick properties and prevent rust. This can be done by cleaning the cookware, applying a thin layer of cast iron oil, and heating it again.
Cleaning: When cleaning cast iron cookware, it's important to avoid harsh detergents and abrasive scrubbers, as they can strip away the seasoning.Instead, use a gentle brush or scraper and hot water to clean the cookware.
Storage: Properly seasoned and maintained cast iron cookware should be stored in a dry place to prevent rust. It's a good practice to lightly oil the cookware before storing it.
Cast iron oil plays a crucial role in maintaining the longevity and performance of cast iron cookware. Regular seasoning and proper care can help keep cast iron cookware in excellent condition and make it a versatile and reliable tool in the kitchen.

User questions & answers
Question: | I used vegtable oil to season my flat top. I rub it on after every use. Can i start using this instead without having to do anything |
Answer: | Hello and thank you for your interest in our product. All of our products are packaged in aluminium as we would like to reduce our dependence on petroleum based materials. The oil is scented with ginger, lemon grass and a hint of rosemary. It is a very savoury and light scent that does not remain as it is formulated with essential oils. Essential oils dissipate quite nicely unlike fragrance oils which will linger, our scent will not transfer onto food. |
Question: | What are the ingredients besides the coconut oil and essential oils? What is the blend of oil spoken of |
Answer: | i agree, you can also buy refined coconut oil, they make it sound like all coconut oils will go rancid, you can buy huge bottles of refined coconut oil and then add whatever scent you want with essential oils. I use straight GOYA coconut oil on my cast irons. Thought this was something specific for that. oh well. |
Question: | Is the container aluminum? What does this oil smell like? Does the scent remain? Is the scent detected in the cast iron cookware or in cooking |
Answer: | These are round |
Question: | I imagine lemongrass is just for scent and you can just use coconut oil that you already own. Is this simply a mix of lemongrass oil and coconut oil |
Answer: | Mine didn't either, any recourse? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be something to use on a blackstone griddle |
Answer: | Use the soap and the chain mail scrubber to clean the pan after use, then use the oil to protect the finish. |
Question: | Doesn't soap ruin cast iron skillets? I was always told to never use soap |
Answer: | The oil is a specially refined coconut oil that will never go rancid. |
Question: | When do I use the soap |
Answer: | When you season cast iron, what you are doing is plasticizing the Iodine (through heat) in the oil to fill the little holes in the pan. Vegetable oil (which is soybean oil) has high levels of Iodine, which is great to store your pan with because the next time you cook with it, you're partially seasoning it during pre-heating with the spread of oil you last put on it. While coconut oil will work as a protective layer on your cast iron, it has VERY POOR levels of Iodine, which means that it won't re-season your pan very well the next time you pre-heat it. Coconut oil won't go rancid as quick as Soybean/Vegetable oil for sure... but if the vegetable oil is going rancid between uses, then you probably don't use your cast iron often enough to bother with a specialized oil. (Coconut oil has less than 8% the Iodine levels as Soybean/Vegetable oil... Olive oil is about 60% ish, but goes rancid quicker... a quick web search will get you some good values. Weight the shelf-life as compared to the Iodine levels when choosing your oil, and don't get oils that need to be refrigerated. You'll find that plain old vegetable/soybean oil wins out per dollar, and it's in your kitchen already anyways. |
Question: | What kind of oil is it |
Answer: | Hello and thank you for your interest in this product. That is the blend, it is a base of refined coconut oil that stays liquid at room temperature and will never go rancid. We then mix it with essential oils to combat bad food odours that can accumulate on the pan. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on stainless steel pan |
Answer: | Cast Iron's Sam is made from fractionated coconut oil. This natural oil has a smoke point of 350 degrees, so if you heat the skillet hotter than that, it will smoke. Another popular cast iron seasoning oil, unrefined flaxseed oil, has a smoke point of 225 degrees. So, flaxseed oil will smoke more starting at a lower temperature than Cast Iron Sam's. To reduce the smoke, try using less oil. Only a very little bit is needed after cleaning and drying your cookware to preserve it maintain your seasoning. Start with a few drops and add more only if needed. |
Question: | I have shutter hinges made of cast iron on a house in nola. would this work as a lubricant/protectant in an exterior application with high humidity |
Answer: | Honestly i won't waste money buying this. I doesn't even coat the pan properly. And forget about using it on a warm pan it burns with a foul smell. It is not natural. |
Question: | Why does it smoke too much |
Answer: | I would probably use the soap on the grill to clean the baked on debris, the oil is specifically used to re-seal cast iron to keep it from rusting ... So it would depend on what your grills are made of.. Mine are stainless steel and do not need to be sealed to keep from rusting .. It's definitely worth a try.. This is a great plant based product.. Hope this helps.. Enjoy your day.. Susan |
Question: | Does it need to clean the pan before cooking? Is it eatable |
Answer: | No. The whole soap will ruin your cast iron is just an old wives tale. You can use as much soap as you want on your cast iron. The only tip is that you need to make sure you dry it with a towel at the end. Any water left on your cast iron will promote rusting if you air dry it. But soap is no problem. I’ve been using dawn on my cast iron for years now and they look better than new. |

Plant-based Source of Essential Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that the body needs to function and cannot create on its own — they must be consumed. Omega-3s are considered important for brain health, heart health, immunity, & healthy hair, skin & nails. Studies show that omega-3s may also reduce inflammation, helping to balance the pro-inflammatory effects of the typical American diet.
NatureWise Organic Flaxseed Oil is a plant-based source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Flaxseed oil is 60% ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid which the body can convert into other essential omega-3s, such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are commonly found in fish oils. Flaxseed oil is free of the toxins often present in fish oils and offers a more sustainable, alternative source of essential omega-3s.
Supports Heart Health
The link between omega-3 fatty acids and heart health is well documented. Research suggests that the omega-3s in flaxseed oil can help regulate cholesterol, blood pressure, heart rate, and inflammatory response.*
Healthy Brain Function
Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for memory and mental health. They protect brain cells, support neural functioning, and boost brain chemicals that support a healthy mood.*
Provides Immune Support
The omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil have been shown to influence immune response by supporting healthy cell membranes, which improves immune cell signaling and the ability of cells to eliminate foreign substances.*
Healthy Hair, Skin & Nails
Flaxseed oil has nutrients that contribute to healthy hair growth, elasticity, and shine. It also has skin-softening and revitalizing properties, and works to nourish dry or brittle nails, preventing them from cracking or splitting.*

Product description
Kuche Chef Cast Iron Oil is ideal for seasoning cast iron because it’s a “drying oil”, which means it will transform into a hard, tough film.
The seasoning on cast iron is formed by fat polymerization, fat polymerization is maximized with a drying oil, and flaxseed oil is the only drying oil that’s edible.
Cast iron oil is the perfect conditioner for all cast iron cookware such as pots, pans, skillets, dutch ovens, woks, griddles and mineral B pans.
How to season cast iron:
1. Warm clean cast iron pan for 15 minutes in a 200°F (100°C) oven to open its pores.
2. Remove the pan from the oven. Place 1 tablespoon cast iron oil in the pan and using tongs, rub the oil into the surface with paper towels. With fresh paper towels, thoroughly wipe out the pan to remove excess oil.
3. Place the oiled pan upside down in a cold oven, then set the oven to 450°F (250°C) and heat for 60 minutes. Turn off the oven; cool the pan in the oven for at least two hours.
4. Repeat the process five more times or until the pan develops a dark, semi-matte surface.
Tip: Do not attempt to speed up the process with thicker coats of oil. The process needs to be timed and measured. You will still need grease when cooking.
This cast iron conditioner will NOT go rancid or leave a sticky, smelly residue.
Cast iron maintenance tips:
1. To prevent scratching of the cooking surface use only wooden or silicone utensils
2. Rinse cast iron hot water and scrub with a chainmail scrubber and kosher salt immediately after each use. Do not use soap
3. Always hand wash your cast iron or carbon steel cookware and do not leave it to soak in water
4. Never wash cast iron cookware in the dishwasher
5. Dry your cast iron in warm oven after use to avoid rust damage
Kuche Chef Cast Iron Oil is suitable for use by vegans and vegetarians.
Please keep the oil refrigerated after opening the lid, for long term use.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone experienced any "flaking" with flaxseed oil |
Answer: | I haven't experienced any flaking at all. I stripped my pans with oven cleaner and then re-seasoned all of them with this product and it works extremely well. |
Question: | I am concerned about the odor. Does it dissappear after the cast iron is treated |
Answer: | Great question! If you follow the seasoning process outlined above (and on the Cast Iron Oils label) the thin hard coating you create to protect your cast iron will be odour free. While you are baking on the flaxseed coating you will smell the flaxseed as the oil is cooked into a thin hard polymer coating, once this is complete the smell will be gone. If the cast iron has been seasoned correctly the Cast Iron Oil will not affect the flavor of the food you cook in the pans. |
Question: | I here after seasoning with flaxseed oil that you should cook a throwaway egg in skillet what is a throwaway egg how long do you cook it |
Answer: | Thank you for another great question. The throwaway egg technique is used to further prime the cast iron after finishing the flaxseed process, it is not necessary but some people say it improves the seasoning. Whisk a couple eggs together in a bowl, then pour a little olive oil into the pan on the stovetop, then poured the eggs into the skillet (they will stick a little bit as you move them around). Remove the cooked eggs when cooked, then scour the pan with coarse salt and oil using a Kuche Chef cast iron scrubber. Finally rinse the pan it with very hot water and dry in a warm oven. They are called throwaway eggs because they are not to be eaten, they are thrown away in the bin (or compost) after cooking. The priming of cast iron is a gradual process. The more you use your cast iron the more non-sick it will become once the foundation Kuche Chef cast iron oil flaxseed polymer has been established and you are not washing with soap. |
Question: | Are their any other ingredients beside flax oil |
Answer: | Thank you for your enquiry. This is a very important question.NO other ingredients have been added. Kuche Chef Cast Iron Oil is 100% Organic Flaxseed Oil. It is important that NO other ingredients are added to Cast Iron Flaxseed Oil because the seasoning on cast iron is formed by fat polymerization. Fat polymerization is maximized with a drying oil, and flaxseed oil is the only drying oil that's edible. Drying oils like 100% flaxseed oil, produce the hardest polymers, meaning the hardest coating on your cast iron. They are characterized by high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially the omega-3 fatty acid. Some flaxseed oil products are mixed with other ingredients to increase the shelf life of the oil and slow rancidity. Using these oils to season your pan can result in flaking and is not recommended as the additional ingredients change the chemical reaction that occurs in the seasoning process. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this cast iron conditioner to maintain their woks seasoned |
Answer: | Ingredients: Organic Palm Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Vitamin E, Citric Acid. My pans are better than any non stick pan I have ever had. Joan L Anderson |
Question: | How is this product used |
Answer: | Absolutely none. I have experimented with a number of different oils and fats for the purpose of cast-iron maintenance, applying a thin layer after cleaning the pan. (note:clean with a stiff bristled brush and warm/hot water). Grapeseed, canola, olive, corn, high-oleic safflower, solid coconut oil, lard and bacon grease -- I've used them all to satisfaction. Currently I'm working my way through a 36 oz bottle of safflower oil: I think it was $4. ..Doing the math... does the same thing at about 1/10th of the ploy that this product undoubtedly is. |
Question: | What ingredients are in the conditioner |
Answer: | Typically, stainless steel pans do not require seasoning oil. But there is nothing about the 100% Seasoning Oil that will conflict with stainless steel. |
Question: | What's the benefit of using this versus using any other sorts of oils |
Answer: | I can't guarantee it would work for exterior application. It works really well on skillets and such. It doesn't seem to dry out even if I don't use a skillet for weeks. It probably wouldn't hurt to give it a try. It can be wiped off if it isn't successful. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are there any ingredients in the Scrub besides coarse salt |
Answer: | A BIG YES! For years I struggled w/ cleaning my 4 skillets and I so wish I found it sooner. I recommend the metal chain type scrubber too. |
Question: | I got a lot of black residue (almost like shoe polish) coming off of old cast iron I have when using this. Anyone else experience this |
Answer: | With Cast Iron, after use, you want to clean them with hot water, then re-season it on the stove or oven. When I used this oil, it smoked REALLY fast, it has a low smoke point. Even when I applied it and used it the next day, it immediately started to smoke. I’m going to stick to avocado oil. I think the “scrub” product is the most useful feature of this pack but than again, I use kosher salt to scrub anything that sticks. Forget the soap, forget the oil... save yourself some money by buying kosher salt and a higher smoke point oil such as olive oil or avocado oil. |
Question: | Would you recommend this product |
Answer: | Thank you for bringing that to our attention and will look into that. Product is 12 fluid ounces. |
Question: | After you oil the pans do you have to heat them in the oven |
Answer: | Yes this oil can be used to season your aluminum cookware and help it keep its color for longer. Do not over apply oil as excess oil will cause smoking. Apply a thin layer, coating all sides and wipe off any excess. Pan is then ready to use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be refilled |
Answer: | It is one of many oils that can be used for seasoning carbon steel pans so the answer is yes. You will get arguments as to which is better just like is Ford better than Chevrolet. Season the carbon steel pans the same steps as Cast Iron. If the pan has been used, make certain it is absolutely clean before seasoning. |
Question: | It makes my pan blotchy? Why |
Answer: | You can, in fact, I use it to oil my nonstick pans before cooking in them. They're getting a little long in the tooth and I recently saw that you should oil nonstick pans as well as cast iron pans. |
Question: | Would you recommend this for seasoning carbon steel pans as well |
Answer: | Nope. It's literally just coarse salt |
Question: | Is this strictly for seasoning or can you also you it for cooking, in place of nonstick spray, since it is Canola oil |
Answer: | No I havent experienced that, but I had really cleaned mine and baked it in the oven before i started to use this oil. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on a Blackstone Griddle |
Answer: | Hi Connie, I don't have that problem...after spraying (on iron and other pan surfaces), I rub it around with a paper towel to make sure the surfaces are covered uniformly. Also it could have to do with how you cleaned your pot/pan previously. Other than those two things, I can't think of anything else...good luck :-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this primarily for initial seasoning? Is there anything else a person should wipe the pan with between uses |
Answer: | Yes, I think the reason to heat it first is that the heat is even throughout the pan that way. Like, cornbread, heating it first gives you a crispier bottom. |
Question: | Can this be used on a flat griddle |
Answer: | For an initial seasoning yes, but most cast iron or carbon steel comes pre-seasoned, so you would only need 1 cycle to maintain |
Question: | Can I use this without heated in oven..after cleaning |
Answer: | It should. Treat the griddle the same way you would a cast iron or carbon steel pan. It will just use up more of the oil. |
Question: | so the pan will be in there for a total of 3 hours total at 500 degrees |
Answer: | No this container can not be refilled. It is a nice product. |
