How Does Our French Press Work?

The Cafe Brew French Press works by steeping (brewing) coffee grounds and hot water. Once the coffee is done steeping, a metal mesh filter is pressed to the bottom of the Press which separates the coffee grounds from the liquid coffee destined for your mug. The metal mesh filter allows the natural oils found in coffee and fine particles to pass through it giving the coffee a thick body.

Immersion Brewing

This process of steeping coffee and water together for an extended time is called immersion brewing because the coffee is immersed in the water as opposed to drip brewing where the water flows through the coffee grounds.

Since the coffee and water are mixed together it is easy to get a uniform extraction with immersion brewers. However this method is vulnerable to over extraction if the coffee is ground too small or the coffee and water are left to steep for too long.

Step 1

Add your favorite coffee (coarse grind) to the French Press. See our Tips below for recommended coffee amounts.

Step 2

Fill with hot water and gently stir the coffee/water for a few seconds to ensure all of the coffee grounds are wet.

Place the top on the Press with the plunger pulled all of the way up to help keep the water hot while the coffee brews.

Step 3

Steep the coffee for about 3-1/2 minutes. When steeping is complete, press the plunger downwards to separate the grounds from the coffee.

Step 4

Once the plunger reaches the bottom, pour the brewed coffee slowly from the French Press into your mug and enjoy!

The Coffee Crust & Your Coffee

After steeping is complete, you will be left with a crust-like layer of coffee grounds on the surface that formed while the coffee was steeping. The final taste and texture of the coffee can be changed depending on how the crust is handled.

For a full bodied final result use a spoon to gently break up the crust and briefly stir it. This will cause most of the coffee to fall to the bottom of the beaker.

For a light bodied final result use the spoon to scoop the crust off and discard it. Keep scooping until you have removed all the floating coffee grounds.

Answer:	Could work outdoors if you know where rats or mice are located/path they travel.

Answer:	It definitely kills rats. We had 1 or more and within a few days of putting the Tomcat out, they were gone. I haven’t seen any dead mice but I’m assuming it kills them too.

Answer:	Same experience- the DeCon pellets work. The blocks made by either company do not work. Have tried the blocks with and without the wrapper. ( use gloves when taking off the wrapper...Odd that there are no instructions regarding the wrapper. Leave on or off. ) Bottom line is the blocks do not work. Pellets do, but they are off the market. My guess is for child and pet safety reasons. The warfarin active can kill and I guess if a hawk or fox eats a poisoned mouse.....Unfortunately, the old snap trap is the way to go. Glue traps are inhumane.

Assuming all of these green bait blocks are the same size, they should weigh 1 ounce each -- giving you 64 blocks in a four-pound container. (For comparison, 16 blocks in the store was almost $10, so this sounds like a good deal!) I hope this helps!

Clean the Stains

The filtration unit is made of rust resistant 304 stainless steel. If the bolt turns black, you may think it's rust, but actually it is from coffee stains. This happens when you soak coffee in the container for a long time and the bolt becomes stained by coffee. It can be cleaned by soaking in acidic liquids (vinegar, lemon juice, etc.) for a while. The stain will fall off and the bolt will revert to a new look.

304 Stainless Steel Screws

The screws are made of stainless steel materials which will not rust or loosen easily. Please tighten the screw to prevent the beaker from falling off after removing for cleaning. If the screw becomes loose, use a screwdriver to tighten it and then you can continue to use the french press.

Unscrew the Filter Screen

The filters are polished (so don't worry about being hurt) and can be taken off by twisting. With one hand fixing the knob on the top of the plunger, you can use the other hand to twist the filter screen holder/plate counter-clockwise. In this way, you can unscrew the filtration unit and add filters as you prefer.
