14 best coffee mill
A coffee mill, also known as a manual coffee grinder or hand coffee grinder, is a device used for grinding coffee beans manually. Unlike electric grinders, coffee mills rely on human effort to grind the beans. These devices are often appreciated by coffee enthusiasts for several reasons:
Portability: Manual coffee mills are generally compact and portable, making them suitable for travelers, campers, or anyone who wants to enjoy freshly ground coffee on the go.
Adjustable Grind Settings: Many manual grinders allow users to adjust the grind size according to their brewing method. This flexibility is valuable for those who use various coffee brewing devices, such as French press, pour-over, or espresso.
Affordability: Manual coffee mills are often more affordable than their electric counterparts. This makes them an attractive option for individuals who want a cost-effective way to grind coffee at home.
Quiet Operation: Since manual grinders do not require electricity, they operate quietly. This can be advantageous for those who prefer a silent coffee preparation process.
Preservation of Coffee Flavor: Manual grinding allows for a slower, more controlled grind, which some argue helps preserve the natural flavors of the coffee beans. The heat generated during grinding in electric grinders can potentially impact the taste of the coffee.
Aesthetic Appeal: Many manual coffee mills have a classic, aesthetically pleasing design. Some people appreciate the visual appeal of these devices as they add a touch of nostalgia to the coffee-making process.
When using a coffee mill, the user typically adjusts the grind size by manipulating a screw or lever mechanism. The beans are placed in a hopper at the top of the mill, and the ground coffee collects in a container below.
It's important to note that the efficiency and ease of use of manual coffee mills can vary between models. Some are designed with durable materials and high-quality burrs for consistent grinding, while others may have limitations. As with any coffee-related product, personal preferences and brewing habits play a significant role in choosing the right coffee mill for individual needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the grinder shut off automatically |
Answer: | Barata makes two versions of grinders: this one has a stainless steel conical burr, which is optimized for fine through coarse grinds, but perhaps not as fine as you would like for espresso. The ceramic flat burr is optimized for espresso, and may not adjust as well as you would like for coarser grinds like French press. I believe either can be used for a medium grind. It may be possible to get both for the same grinder, but I’m not sure about that. |
Question: | Does the hopper keep the beans fresh? Is it air tight |
Answer: | The status light only blink for the first 10 seconds or so after a status change and go off until you change function again. So you never have that continuous blinking light. |
Question: | Is the grinder hands free |
Answer: | The Ear bud from outside body to ear tip with a medium size ear tip on it is 1". The Ear Bud body itself is 0.5" Depth x 1" diameter x 5/8 " diameter as it is ovular. The charging case is 1.75" Height x 3" Length x 1.75" Depth. |
Question: | is this grinder good for expresso |
Answer: | Yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | Espresso |
Answer: | Fine for espresso, but for consistent larger French Press size grind, Orphan Espresso makes a reinforcing kit to assure the burs stay concentric. http://www.orphanespresso.com/OE-Lower-Bearing-UPGRADE-KIT-for-Hario-Skerton-Kyocera-CM50-Hand-Grinders_p_4066.html |
Question: | Would this screw on to a normal mason jar |
Answer: | Yes, it does! I just tested it on a Ball mason jar, and it worked fine: https://twitter.com/alexsaintx/status/431459550689263616 |
Question: | will it make correct grind for French Press |
Answer: | Yes it will, not 100% perfect, as the grinds are not 100% consistent (as in, some particles are different sizes from others), especially if you loosen it too much and make it too coarse. But if you veer toward the finer end of the coarse scale, the grinds get more consistent. This is due to the conical burr mechanism of this device, which is primarily for expresso machine or stovepot. If you want something more consistent, you might want to check out it's little brother, Hario coffee grind mini ( http://www.amazon.com/Hario-Coffee-Mill-Slim-Grinder/dp/B001804CLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390204236&sr=8-1&keywords=hario+grinder+mini ), its mechaism is a lot more rigid and accommodating for a range of grinds.... This big one is just more loose on the loose settings. However I bought this one for it's size and stability of base. As I value stablity especially if I am grinding a large amount to fill my coffee storage box for the week ahead.....It depends what you are after, stability/large volume or portability/better-range-of-grind. For me, the french press settings, though not perfect, is GOOD ENOUGH for me....it makes a very drinkable french press brew for all but the most fussy connoisseurs.Hope this comprehensively answers your question. |
Question: | Ordered this through Amazon-fulfilled by Digital Pen.The lid was missing. Yours come with lid in orig box |
Answer: | The mill from Digital Pen is a FAKE. I also received it but it came in a brown box with no bean lid or jar lid and had no mention of Hario. I was suspicious and ordered another from Amazon (not just fulfilled by Amazon). The real mill came in a Hario box with the Hario name on the handle, glass, and mill. The plastic, ceramic, glass and metal details are different and of better quality with the real Hario. Beware of this seller. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions |
Answer: | It’s 7 inches tall |
Question: | What is an "HD motor |
Answer: | When speaking of a coffee grinder, it means heavy duty enough to get the job done and not wear out the motor. The last one i got lasted me 25 years and it was finally getting tired. For small seeds and spices, even hard ones, to any kind of nut, it does the job well. Almost too well if grinding nuts. Better to get the larger pieces out and grind just them than keep trying in the same batch, you can wind up with almost a dry nut butter. |
Question: | hi, where are these made in? thanks |
Answer: | The literature says "Made in PRC" (Peoples Republic of China) and the label cast into the unit on the bottom says "Made in China." |
Question: | How can you control the grind coarseness of the grind? This looks like a standard blade grinder with a motor |
Answer: | If you're very serious about this question, do NOT buy this grinder. That said, I personally like it but have a few tricks to improve performance. It's very tough to accurately control the coarseness with this type of grinder. If you are looking for a med-fine for making drip coffee it's all about amount of time you hold down the button, and does a decent job. Course grounds for french press are very, very difficult, due to the way the grinder works. When I make french press, I tap the button for 1 second, 18 times, picking the grinder up and shaking after each button press. I use a kitchen sifter to let the extra fine coffee fall thru (use that for wife's cold brew) and use the course grounds for my french press. Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used as a grain mill |
Answer: | This thing has been a workhorse! I use it for grinding whole oats with hulls (sometimes sunflower seeds too) to make up horse feed 2x a day. I grind 4-5 cups each feeding with the setting on coarse, and after almost 2 1/2 years it is just now getting a little dull and heating up to where it quits on me toward the end of the 5th cup. I am getting ready to purchase again even though the first one is still working... just not quite as well. It has never let me down! I have been very happy, considering I have not been using it for its intended use. |
Question: | Is it OK to put a small amount of coffee in the hopper (e.g., enough for one cup) and let the timer turn off after the hopper has been depleted |
Answer: | Probably, but you're far better off using a simple blade grinder such as the Krups. I have a fancy burr grinder that I use for drip, but for my AeroPress I use my Krups oval shaped electric blade grinder. It's under $20 and has been a workhorse for years. When doing my morning cup with my AeroPress (which I highly recommend) there is zero heat build up (see later) for the 17g - 19g that I grind, and zero mess. I grind, tip it over and give it a tap, that's it, no cleanup. Some grounds stick to the inside of the grinder, but I leave them there, no need to scrape them out as they don't interfere with the freshly ground coffee. The AeroPress works best with finely ground coffee so a blade grinder is ideal. If you're doing one cup at a time you don't need a burr grinder. Don't listen to anyone that says you do because it's a myth perpetrated all over the place, but completely baseless. There's hardly any heat generated in the ten seconds it takes to grind with a blade grinder. |
Question: | I've heard this is not a conical burr. can anyone that is not this seller please tell me if it is actually conical or flat like the other cuisinart |
Answer: | There's some confusion here about burr types. This uses a "block" burr, which has some similarities to flat burrs but is vastly inferior. Flat burrs can theoretically be the most consistent, but in practice conical burrs can be just as good in quality grinders. Block burrs are cheap junk, barely better than blade grinders. |
Question: | is this a conical burr grinder |
Answer: | It’s a ceramic flat burr.As for espresso whine, gee, no these machines will not do for high end $$$ espresso machines, spent the $200 plus and stop being cheap, aka whining. This one is OK, just acceptable for my cheap espresso machine. The Bodum BISTRO Burr Grinder, Electronic Coffee Grinder does a better job for espresso in the under $100 range of this ilk, but still will not be up to the standards of whiners. It is odd it doesn’t do coarse ground well, the grid isn’t uniform. The Bodim is conical. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Electric vs manual coffee grinder |
Answer: | This one is manual. I use it daily to grind coffee for my french press. It takes me less than 2 minutes to grind 1/4 of beans on a course setting. It is very east to clean and works great. I had a electric blade grinder with various setting, and it didn't have a consistent grind. I'm very pleased with this one. |
Question: | Do you sell replacement parts |
Answer: | Hi there!Yes, we do! We have newly upgraded burrs with reinforced nylon to replace the previous versions with plastic that are available on Amazon and our website :) Hope this was helpful! |
Question: | How many cups of coffee is this thing built to make? How long would it take to grind enough for a 12 cup coffee maker |
Answer: | Hey there!Great question! This specific style grinder is built to grind enough for 1-2 cups of coffee at a time, and it will take around 2-5 minutes to get that amount ground depending on the person. We wouldn't recommend grinding for more 5-6 cups of coffee at a time to minimize the risk of your ground coffee losing flavor over the time spent grinding beans. Hope this answer was helpful :) |
Question: | Does this come with a chart showing number of "clicks" and type of grind? (coarse, medium, medium fine, etc.) Or has anyone figured that out |
Answer: | Hi Mike,Thanks for the question! Every one of our grinders comes with a detailed instruction manual that goes over various grind types needed for different brewing methods. As far as the number of clicks for each grind size, here are a few additional guidelines from our team of baristas for you to follow. Turn the adjustment knob all the way to the right. Each number below represents a "click" to the left. Coarse: 13-18 Medium Coarse: 10-12Medium: 7-9Medium Fine: 4-6Extra Fine: 1-3 The art of hand grinding your coffee includes finding the perfect size for your preferences, so use these as a starting point to create your own unique brew. Hope you found this helpful! :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any way to get a consistent coarse grind? Ive tried coarse and medium and it still creates too fine of grinds and clogs my steel filters |
Answer: | The grinder is ceramic and there is a dial to adjust the grind to what ever you want. I have been using this grinder now for about six months daily and it is consistently the same coursness. I have yet to have to take it apart and deep clean ot. However, I am grinding for a French press, so I use a fairly course grind. It may clog up more if you require a more fine grind. |
Question: | Can this be used on the keurig? And what grain |
Answer: | Yes but it must be set very fine and some experimentation may be needed to suit the individual coffee. |
Question: | Coming from a person that has never owned a manual coffee grinder but loves espresso greatly and had a 2 lb bag gifted to me.will I be happy withthis |
Answer: | It does take a really long time to grind. I love espresso but I wish I had bought an electric one. The last thing I want to do first thing in the morning is grinding coffee for 3 mins just to make enough for 2 cups. Not a bad product but I feel like it might be more for a connoisseur or someone with more patience. |
Question: | How do you adjust the grind size with this |
Answer: | Ok, when you take apart the top grinder thing, which you'll easily figure out and if you get confused, take a photo of it the way it is put together properly if you need that reference, but when you take apart the top grinder, the very last metal part, that looks like a gear with about 8 notches on it, flat, it looks like something maybe that you would associate with steampunk, anyway, you turn that metal flat thing with the 8 or so notches on it. You turn it clockwise for fine grounds, too small for a French press....or....you turn it counter clock wise to make more course grounds that will work better for a French press. If you have about 5 threads showing above that flat metal thing with about 8 notches on it, on the one we used, this model, it made perfect course coffee for the French press. That setting for the larger/course grounds also grinds much faster. This is absolutely NOT hard to grind with and does not make your arm tired. You're not doing it forever. It's SUPER EASY! I've never had a manual (none electric) coffee grinder before. I figured they were kind of lame but OH MY GOSH it is INCREDIBLE. We got this same exact one as a gift for someone and they absolutely loved it. That long spoon that comes with it, the long brown one, about 4 of those scoops make a fantastic full standard coffee pot using a French Press...I think they are about 1 liter or 1.5 liters. This grinder is very high quality. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello. i am looking for the owner's manual for this coffee grinder. can anyone share |
Answer: | I've been using it with my Aeropress and a drip machine at work. Works great with the Aeropress, you can fine tune the heck out of the grind and it stays even, much more so than with a blade grinder. I paid for my grinder, but have been invited to Amazon Vine program and just recieved a french press to try out and just brewed my first batch using Nani's San Francisco blend beans with the OXO Brew on 13 (middle of coarse settings). I've been going keto with my diet, so heavy whiping cream and no sugar... tastes really good. I think if you plan on making good coffee, this is worth the investment. Wow, for a first shot at using a french press... that came out good. |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | We’ve had this grinder for a couple of years and do struggle with static cling around the hopper. We also have found this model so hard to clean that today it actually went in the trash - not because it quit grinding but between the clinging mess and the difficulty cleaning it, both of which cause lingering stray grounds all over the place we had just had enough. There’s got to be a better way. And by the way although I can’t compare the noise to any other models, I can say this one is loud enough to drive the dog and the toddlers from the room. |
Question: | Looking for a good Coarse Grinder for cold brew will this grinder produce a good coarse grind? Don’t want anything to fine |
Answer: | These other answers are ridiculous. I've had the grinder for 18 mos. Works great - but it's pretty loud. I'm not sure it's louder than other grinders, but these answers that say "pretty quiet" and "very quiet" are totally off base. Works great. Not "very or pretty" quiet |
Question: | What is the material of the bottom container the grounds fall into? Plastic develops a charge that causes grounds to jump out and make a mess |
Answer: | Yes. Amazon is overrun these days by fake reviews and it's only slightly better if they disclose they received a free product in exchange (as I do think a reviewer's time is worth something). I am now in the habit of going to a 3rd party, like Fakespot, to see if fake reviews are influencing overall rating of product. As of March 2019, Fakespot gave this product a "C" rating. I also like to read some of the middle grades to see what people like / hate about a product because most balanced reviews are going to have both positive and negative things to say. |

User questions & answers
Question: | May I know if the 220V version is available? If so, how do I order it |
Answer: | It is in pdf form about 8 inchs above these Q and A's on this page. |
Question: | Is it easy to clean, especially the grinding burr |
Answer: | Dunno where it’s made, I’d guess china. It grinds well, very even. But it makes a mess. The mesh point between the ground canister and the grinder isn’t snug enough and grounds go everywhere each time you take it out to put grounds into coffee maker. If I had a do-over I’d buy a more expensive model, hopefully one that was manufacturer more precisely. |
Question: | My grinder uses a timer to dispense just the right amount for my French Press. Seems like Baraza will be more irritating work. Is it? How does it go |
Answer: | The coursest setting is far too fine. I don't like it for pour-over and it would be awful for French press. I can't imagine it working well for cold brew. |
Question: | I'm having trouble grinding anything finer than around a 7 - if I put it on a 4-6 (for espresso), the beans just pop around - what am I doing wrong |
Answer: | I used to have this problem with another brand of grinder. I used a long narrow strip of Al foil stuck in the ground coffee container of the unit and the other end lying on a damp sponge or towel on the counter. This disperses the static electricity and largely eliminates the problem. YMMV |

Answer: | All I know is it is ceramic and well made. I have used it a lot and no chips. I do hand wash and dry. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would this grinder work for grinding spices |
Answer: | Yes. With the plunger still pressed down, you could unscrew the lid, lift slightly and get some additives in the coffee. A little cumbersome, but definitely doable. |
