13 best pizza stones

A pizza stone is a versatile and essential kitchen tool used in baking homemade pizzas. It is typically made of natural stone or ceramic material, and its primary purpose is to help distribute and retain heat evenly in your oven to achieve a perfectly crispy crust for your pizzas. Here are some key points about pizza stones:

  1. Material: Pizza stones are commonly made from materials like cordierite, ceramic, or clay. These materials have excellent heat-retention properties, allowing them to absorb and radiate heat evenly to cook the pizza crust thoroughly.

  2. Even Heat Distribution: One of the main benefits of using a pizza stone is its ability to distribute heat evenly. This even heat transfer ensures that your pizza crust cooks uniformly, preventing any undercooked or overcooked spots.

  3. Crust Crispiness: Pizza stones are known for their ability to produce crispy and well-browned crusts. When preheated in the oven, the stone absorbs moisture from the pizza dough, resulting in a crispier bottom crust.

  4. Versatility: Pizza stones are not limited to just pizza. They can also be used to bake bread, pastries, and other baked goods. The even heat distribution helps in achieving a nice crust on various baked items.

  5. Preheating: It's essential to preheat your pizza stone in the oven before placing the pizza on it. This ensures that the stone is as hot as possible and helps in creating a crisp crust. Preheating can take about 30 minutes or more at the desired oven temperature.

  6. Care and Maintenance: Pizza stones should be handled with care. They should not be exposed to rapid temperature changes, as this can cause them to crack. Cleaning a pizza stone is usually done by scraping off excess food particles and using minimal water, as they can absorb moisture.

  7. Varieties: Pizza stones come in various shapes and sizes, including round, square, and rectangular. Some may have a glazed surface to make them easier to clean, while others have an unfinished, porous surface that absorbs moisture for a better crust.

  8. Placement: Pizza stones are typically placed on the oven rack or directly on a preheated grill for outdoor pizza cooking. Some people also use a pizza peel or parchment paper to transfer the pizza onto the hot stone.

In summary, a pizza stone is a valuable tool in the world of baking and pizza making. It helps achieve a professional-quality, crispy crust that is often challenging to replicate using standard baking sheets or pans. Pizza stones are a favorite among home cooks and pizza enthusiasts, contributing to the success of homemade pizza and other baked goods.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a carry rack
Answer: I have to strongly disagree with the seller. I and my family (including children) have used racks with other stones for years and never had an issue. Peels are great if you have a elevated stove, but if you have to crouch down for a lower level oven they can become unstable and its a great recipe for a 425 degree pizza on the foot. Finding a rack from another brand in 16" has become a pain and I will have to basically throw away a competitors stone if I want to acquire one. All things considered I should have shopped more. I recommend you offer it as an option and let your customers decide.
Question: Can this be used to make pizza's using home made uncooked or unfrozen pizza dough? If so, how do you transfer to the stone
Answer: Yes, I make homemade pizza dough all of the time and sometimes I also buy the dough in the frozen section of the grocery. The trick is to make sure that it will slide off of whatever surface you are actually constructing the pizza on. I make my dough and then build the pizza entirely on a piece of parchment paper. I then slide the pizza with toppings on the parchment paper into the oven. Another way is to dust the work surface and the pizza stone with a little cornmeal so that that dough slides off nicely. Before I had a pizza peel, I slid the dough off and on the stone with a cookie sheet that had a flat edge on one side. It was an inexpensive way to manage the dough and I already had the baking sheet in my kitchen. There are a lot of ways to so this, just make sure to follow the recipes that Cast Elegance sends you and to read and follow the Use and Care instructions carefully. The most important step is to heat the pizza stone for a minimum of 25 minutes after the oven is up to the desired temperature. Relax, enjoy...it is a fun way to "UP YOUR GAME" on pizzas!
Question: I have never cooked on a pizza stone before, what suggestions do you have for getting started
Answer: CastElegance will send you an email with a 31 page recipe Ebook attached. The recipes are easy to make and are quite delicious. Read the Care and Use section carefully. It is important to know that a WET stone will not work and a COLD stone will not work! If the stone is wet, dry the stone in the oven at 450F for 60 minutes before using. Always preheat the stone for 30 minutes before putting food on it. Never wash with soap or any chemicals and never put the stone in the dishwasher. If you follow these basic steps you should have great results.
Question: Other company's pizza stone reviews say that they break. How can I be sure yours does not have the same problem? I want something that will last
Answer: Yes, we have had broken stones, I would have to believe a lot less broken stones than other companies. The shipping folks throw them around like frisbees sometimes. The difference is that as a small business, I take care of my customers and am only a phone call or an email away. When a customer has a problem, i send them a new stone, no questions asked. If you read the reviews, you will see that I take care of customers and while this is straight out of my profits, it has generated a lot of goodwill for my company. I buy online all of the time and I have found that not many companies will answer the phone or respond to an email. I answer the phone, I answer the emails, I am the owner. I treat people like I want to be treated. I am proud of my customer support and I often tell my 5 daughters that if they ever want to go into business, you have to treat customers with respect and with honesty. After all, isn't that what life is about?

What to Look for When Buying a Pizza/Baking Stone

Pizza stones can make your ordinary homemade pizza taste like they are from your favorite pizzeria. With some practice, a Cast Elegance stone can deliver the crispiest crusts with amazing, melting ‘gooey” toppings. Cast Elegance stones are made from a specially designed, premium blend of cordierite that magnifies the heat of a home oven and gives you the performance of a professional brick baking oven right in your own kitchen.

Cast Elegance stones are formulated from premium materials and designed to satisfy the most demanding chefs.

Look for a stone that can withstand extremes of heat so that you can place your frozen pizza directly on a stone that is at 500 degrees. Buy a stone that has been tested under extreme conditions and is certified to be used in any type of electric oven, gas oven, electric grill, gas grill, pellet grill, charcoal grill, Big Green Egg, Kamado.. you get the idea. Cast Elegance has engineered a stone that is made from Thermarite, a premium, quality formulation of cordierite that is the best substance on the planet to provide the heat source and durability to withstand temperature extremes and day to day handling to provide a product that will last for years.

How Do I Choose the Right Size?

Choose the right size for your oven by measuring the shortest useable side of your oven rack.

If your rack slopes upwards at the back of your oven, omit that space from your measurements.

Most ovens will only accommodate the 14-inch diameter round stone or the 14 x 16 inch rectangular stone. The 16-inch round stone will not fit many ovens.

How Do I Clean My Pizza Stone?

Never clean with soap or chemicals!

Always dry well in the oven before using. If chemicals or soap are used, they will soak into the stone and create an odor when they are heated. Also never season the stone with oil. The oil will soak in and create a smell when it burns off. Store the stone in the oven when not in use. It will keep the stone safe and dry and will actually improve the temperature profile of the oven and help the oven perform better.

Why Does My Pizza Stone Have Stains?

Stains are normal and in fact over time, the stone will have many more marks and spots from use. Think of it as a wonderful patina of memories of all the great food that you have made. A well-used stone will be a beautiful mottled black and brown from the oils from cheese and crusts and baked things that it has created. This is all good and should be expected. The marks and stains will not affect the performance or function of the stone. All porous type cookware such as this and pottery cookware will stain with use. Many cooks even prefer a stone that has been used for a while!

User questions & answers

Question: Was this made in the US
Answer: Unfortunately, I did not keep the box. It is very heavy but seems to be cooking the food well.
Question: Can I place this on glass top stove to be a heat diffuser and put pots on it
Answer: This could act as a diffuse my fear would be scratching your glass with the pottery. Depending on pot sizes you may look at a Wok Ring. Your mileage may vary :)
Question: I want to buy usa made and not made in china. where was this made
Answer: I emailed the company and just got an answer. I'm SO bummed! The pizza stone IS made in China. I try to buy US products as well but this slipped through the cracks. Great question.
Question: This says to always pre heat oven. What about for frozent food
Answer: While you are preheating your stone in the oven, you can set your store-bought frozen pizza on your counter and allow it to thaw. It will be a little flimsy, so after placing cornmeal or flour on your stone as directed, use a long pancake turner to place your pizza on the stone. If you have enough room, you could always use a pan and place the whole shebang on top of the stone. Remember the warnings that an ice cold frozen food item MIGHT crack your stone.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is it made? Is there any info on country of origin
Answer: Hi, It's made in China, same as most of other pizza stones.
Question: is this stone dishwasher safe
Answer: Hi, This stone can not be washed in a dishwasher. Thank you.
Question: Is this lead free
Answer: Hi, The ROCKSHEAT stone contains no lead or other harmful chemicals, it is burned in 2200℉ kiln and FDA, RoHS, LFGB, etc CERTIFICATED.
Question: Why does my pizza stick? I have pre heated each time as instructed
Answer: Hi Sticking will occur when: 1/the stone is not hot enough, this is the main reason of sticking. In the convection oven without heating tubes, it will take longer to preheat. We advise you to turn on the top broiler and put the stone on top rack to preheat with the highest temperature of your oven. Maybe you can burn the stone on burner, and it will heat up much quickly. You can also use infrared thermometer to get the temperature. If the temperature lower than 450F, the pizza may won't have brown bottom, even turn out to be sticking. It's hard to tell the accurate preheating time of reaching that high temp because it always depend on the performance of the oven or grill. One hour probably not enough in some ovens which can't reach their indicated temp. Infrared thermometer will show you the right way. 2/ the dough is too wet. For this, dusting some flour or cornmeal with your dough is useful, you can also put parchment paper on the stone to prevent sticking.

Product features

Why should you use ROCKSHEAT?

Perfect thickness:

We design the thickness to 0.63" for this size, no extra unnecessary weight (only 7.1LB) and would not require for a extended preheating time as the thicker ones.

Question: What are the cleaning instructions? Are all 3 tools dishwasher safe
Answer: I clean mine this way - leave it in the oven until completely cool. The next day is good. Clean by hand in the sink with hot water and dish soap. I use a scrub brush. Always remember to heart it in the oven as the oven heats. No germs will be left by the time you put the pizza on it.
Question: Is there a best way to transfer pizza onto stone to cook with out it falling apart . What is best to prepare it on
Answer: As others have said, put lots of corn meal or semolina flour on the peel before the dough is placed on it. Quickly prepare the pizza (e.g. in less than 5 minutes) and gently lift the edges of the dough before sliding off onto the hot stone.
Question: Can I use this in my oven
Answer: yes it works perfectly. I use 500 degree heat and let the stone in the oven. Then I make the pizza and use the peal to put it on the hot stone. Makes crust really crispy

A stone makes pizza taste better

Our ceramic pizza stone bakes a crisper, more flavorful and delicious crust. That's because the stone is heat-resistant to 800° and distributes heat evenly without hot spots, which mimics the conditions of a traditional brick pizza oven. Besides using the stone for pizza, it's also great for serving warm bagels, toast, waffles, tortillas, and more. The ceramic stone is 13 inches in diameter and ⅜ inch thick.

A peel for managing any size pizza

The long-handled pizza peel is made from aluminum with a super-smooth finish that resists sticking. Slide the peel under an assembled pizza, place it onto the hot stone in the oven, and remove the peel while the pizza bakes. When the pizza is done, slide the peel under the crust and move the pizza from the oven to a cutting surface. The peel measures 9½ x 10½ inches with an 11½ inch handle.

A cutting wheel that makes perfect cuts

The stainless steel pizza cutter has a round cutting wheel with finger protectors that help keep hands from touching the super-sharp blade. It's a great tool that can also be used for cutting flatbread, brownies, and dessert bars. The key to keeping a sharp blade is to wash it by hand and dry with a soft towel, because moisture will dull any blade. The pizza cutter has a 2⅝ inch diameter blade and a handle that's 4½ inch long.

  • Faster - This pizza stone for oven pre-heats twice as fast as other pizza stones on the market. It thoroughly cooks homemade pizza at quicker baking times and produces a much crisper crust. The tapered edge allows for easy serving
  • Less mess - The baking stone is coated in a non-stick glaze that prevents crust from fusing to it and creating a mess. Does not stain from grease or burnt crust and washes easily. Just sponge it with warm, soapy water and it will look brand new again
  • Designed to last - The pizza stone for grill is made from black ceramic and is coated in a protective glaze, so there is no need to worry about the surface being affected by ultra-high temperatures. It also will not smoke, giving more flavor
  • A perfect slice - Do other pizza stones for grill and oven come with a wheel cutter? This one does and it slices through pizza with ease. No more half-sliced pizzas that you need to pull apart. You can even use it when you order pizza in
  • Natural materials - The baking stone for bread and pizza is made of fine natural materials and must be used correctly, first placed in a room-temperature oven and then preheated, otherwise placing the cold stone in a hot oven could cause it to crack

User questions & answers

Question: Will cutting slices on it damage the finish
Answer: My rule I never cut on a any hot stone besides this stone has such a nice finish on it that I wouldn't want to chip it. a pizza peel and a cutting board is your best friend when it comes to this.
Question: Can this handle 470 degrees without breaking
Answer: I'm not sure. It has handled 450 degrees without breaking and has lasted for half a year so far.
Question: Does this stone emit or have any lead content since it is ceramic? Any health hazards
Answer: I do NOT see any reference on the manufacturer's website (http://skysolutionsusa.com/product/pizza-stone/) regarding the composition of the stone or that it is completely safe. I am considering purchasing this but I need to know what's in it, particularly about the paint and the glaze/coating.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the diameter of this stone? Is it 13.63 or
Answer: Mine measured 13" even - but maybe it shrank cause I used it a lot already.
Question: Dishwash & microwave safe
Answer: Not usually supposed to use soap on stones so I’d say no dishwasher. I don’t know about microwave but also not sure what you’d use it for in the microwave? It’s for conventional oven or grill use
Question: A reviewer said the instructions say this stone is safe to 400°, and the manufacturer answered 500°. i cook my pizzas at 450°-500°. What's the deal
Answer: I cook on a Kamado grill and check the stone temp with an IR thermometer. This thing routinely gets into the mid-600's if not higher and I haven't had an issue yet (knock on wood). My guess is they only rate/guarantee it to that so if you cook higher they can say you weren't following directions which is why it broke. Of all my stones it is definitely the thinnest and only one I'd say feels a bit on the fragile side, but I've used it either as a stone to cook on or a deflector in a 500*+ kamado easily a couple dozen times now and no problems.
Question: Can you use this with a frozen pizza
Answer: Yes but I would pre heat it in the oven before putting the pizza on it.
