14 best iron for quilters
An iron for quilters, often referred to as a quilting iron, is a specialized type of iron designed to meet the unique needs of quilting enthusiasts. Quilters require irons that can provide precise heat control, a smooth glide, and sometimes additional features to help with their quilting projects. Here's what you should know about irons for quilters:
Precise Temperature Control: Quilters often work with various types of fabric, including delicate and heat-sensitive materials. A quilting iron typically features precise temperature control settings, allowing quilters to adjust the heat to match the specific fabric they are working with. This helps prevent damage to the fabric.
Steam Functionality: Many quilting irons come with a steam feature that can help remove wrinkles and creases from fabric quickly. The steam function can be turned on or off as needed, providing flexibility for different quilting tasks.
Non-Stick Soleplate: The soleplate of a quilting iron is usually non-stick, which helps prevent fabrics from sticking to the iron and causing damage or staining. This non-stick surface ensures a smooth glide over the fabric.
Size and Weight: Quilting irons are often designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to handle for extended periods. This is especially important for quilters who work on intricate designs or large quilts.
Safety Features: Many quilting irons include safety features such as automatic shut-off to prevent accidents if the iron is left unattended for a certain period. This is a crucial safety measure for users who may become engrossed in their quilting projects.
Cord Length and Swivel: A long cord with a swivel feature can provide quilters with more flexibility and ease of movement around their quilting workspace.
Vertical Steam: Some quilting irons offer a vertical steam feature, allowing users to steam fabrics while they are hanging or draped vertically. This is helpful for pressing quilts and larger fabric pieces.
Multiple Steam Settings: Quilting irons often have multiple steam settings, such as a burst of steam for stubborn wrinkles and a continuous steam option for overall fabric smoothing.
Durability: Since quilters may use their irons extensively, durability is an essential consideration. Quality quilting irons are built to withstand frequent use.
Price Range: Quilting irons come in a range of price points, from affordable options suitable for occasional quilters to more advanced models with additional features for professional quilters.
It's important for quilters to choose an iron that aligns with their specific quilting needs and preferences. Additionally, reading product reviews and considering factors such as warranty and customer support can help quilters make an informed decision when selecting the right quilting iron for their projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | buy extra warranty or protection plan |
Answer: | Add me to the group! I purchased this iron a year ago. A year and TEN days ago. I know this because this morning when water started pouring out of my iron, I had to look up the date of purchase, so I could use my spiffy one year warranty. So much for that!! One year, and this pretty expensive iron is broken, ten days after the warranty expires. I am beyond frustrated, reading that this has happened to others who purchased one of these irons. My last iron was $12 at Walmart and lasted 15 years, four moves, 2 children, and a serviceman who wore BDU's, which needed to be ironed, five days a week. Get the warranty!! |
Question: | Are the lower heat settings gentle enough for jersey/stretch knit fabrics but still hot enough to get the job done right |
Answer: | Yes they are. That's part of what you're paying the high price for. I had another Rowenta iron similar to this and it had over 100 temperature settings. This is important if you iron a variety of delicate synthetic fabrics, because the cheap irons just don't "cut" it. |
Question: | is this iron made in Germany or China |
Answer: | Mine says Made in Germany on the iron. But don't do like I did and think it's an excellent product because it's not made in China. Wait till it starts leaking water out of the bottom. I can only use mine as a dry iron anymore. Read all the online reviews for this model. Leaking seems to be a common problem with these Rowenta's. |
Question: | why should I not use distilled water in my rowenta iron |
Answer: | I think the cleaning tap water after each use demand is reflective of the answer whether to utilize distilled H2O. I drink only distilled water for the past 30 years as it removes all impurities including radioactive isotopes ending up at 6.9 ph. Tap water is targeted at 7.2 ph, human blood 7.4 ph. Removal of the intended steam water after each use solves the standing water colloidalization of metal; then distilled no cleaning demand. For me, I will use this method with DISTILLED WATER and see my last iron last over 30 years until it breaks from age old wear. New iron, why should I change a sure thing of past experience; nope! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this made in America |
Answer: | No, it's not cordless. It has a 10 foot long, swivel cord. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Yes it includes the Dual-Purpose Lint Brush and Steam Diffuser, Fiber Brush, Steam Handle. Thank you! |
Question: | Has anyone burned the silicone solemate by leaving the temp on 3 all the time rather than turning down to 1 between every use |
Answer: | Do you have it secured tightly in the water receptacle? Where is the water coming from? If from the steam vents, this should not happen and maybe you got a lemon. I have two and this has never happened, |
Question: | I am so forgetful to unplug my iron. Does this turn off if I forget to unplug it for a day or two |
Answer: | Sorry, I am unable to answer that question. There is nothing on the unit itself, and I went through the owners guide, and it's not indicated in there either. I suggest you call Sunbeam customer service at 1-800-458-8407. Or maybe Amazon can put you in touch with the distributor who could answer that for you. |

Proper Usage Tip #1: Hand position
To avoid burn injuries, place your hand on top of the iron, keeping your fingers away from the hot soleplate.
Proper Usage Tip #2: Turn temperature to Setting 1 when resting your iron
Prior to resting your iron, make sure the iron temperature is on setting 1 (low temp). Do not rest your iron with the temperature setting in position 2 (medium temp) or position 3 (high temp).
Proper Usage Tip #3: Use the the "Resting Side" of you Solemate when resting your iron
The dual purpose solemate functions as a safe place to rest your iron and for storage. The "resting side" lets the hot soleplate safely rest every time during ironing and protects fabrics. The "storage side" easily snaps to the soleplate, for easy transportation and storage.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it still made in China |
Answer: | I was shocked to see on my Rowenta iron that it was made in China, not in Germany like all the advertisements said. I’m pretty disgusted. My first Rowenta iron was made in Germany. When did they change? |
Question: | Is this made in the USA |
Answer: | I looked up maytag on wikipedia and google, they have plants in the US and in Mexico but also own and are connected to many other brands which are made outside the US and Americas. Supposedly the laundry related supplies are made in the US and Mexico. Well, tracking down this exact product seems elusive but do believe that most of the irons that come up on an Amazon search for USA ARE NOT MADE HERE AT ALL-THEY NEED TO FIX THAT ITS FRUEDULENT |
Question: | Does this iron make any beeping or other sounds |
Answer: | Hi Erin,So sorry for the delayed response. No where in the instruction manual does it mention that the Maytag iron beeps or makes any sounds. When it goes into auto shut-off mode a small red indicator light flashes until iron is either turned off or put in use again. I hope this answers your question! -Kay |
Question: | Does this have auto-shut off |
Answer: | WARNING this iron is not usable. It literally shuts off while we iron the clothes and there is not setting to turn off the auto shut off. Very Dissapointed! |

Answer: | Quoting what Jeff F just said. These razors are NOT ProGlides even though they advertised it as such. The insert inside the package is just an advertisement to TRY the ProGlide. The order i just received today are the original Fusion blades. |
Question: | can this iron be used without water |
Answer: | These are authentic Gilette blades. Many years ago I spoke to Gilette customer service and they told me how to verify if blades were authentic or knock offs. On the back of the plastic that holds the blade just under the piece that pivots there are code numbers, about 8 digits. Counter fitters do not have the ability to place these tiny code numbers onto the plastic, and in truth who actually knows about this. The blades sent from Amazon have these code numbers. |
Question: | Can I download the instructions? I lost all that and can't remember what all the buttons mean |
Answer: | I find it really hard to believe that people can shave their entire face 31 times with a single blade. But, that's not what Gillette claim. They say it lasts a month, but really they mean it lasts 8 to 10 shaves. For me, I would need to trim my beard before I shaved if I waited that long between uses. I would say that if you can grow a full beard 1 blade a week is what you can expect to get from these blades. That said, the one week works better than any other disposable blade on the market. Gillette will never sell you 1 blade for $1 as long as they still cost a nickle to make. |
Question: | I'm looking for a compact iron for my sewing (pressing seams and whatnot). Does anyone use this for that purpose and does it work well? TIA |
Answer: | Your level of testosterone varies over time. A normal range for a man is typically 300–1000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). Each use of a Gillette product reduces your testosterone level by an indeterminant quantity. Regular testosterone level testing will be important if (1) you want to remain a man, and (2) you use Gillette blades on a regular basis. |

This little iron works great for this. I also used it for applying iron-on bias tape to an applique project. It worked great for that too. |
Question: | Has anyone used this with heat tranafer vinyl for small projects like a shoe or coffee mug |
Answer: | CLOVER MINI IRON is designed for pressing seams, ribbons, hems, corners, point and other activities such as quilting, applique’, paper crafts etc.… but many crafters use their creativity to extend its use to other applications. The use of Mini Iron in Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) on Fabric is definitely common and proved to be successful, provided you use the right HTV Brand and type that could be applied at a temperature that the mini iron can handle. For other supports such as coffee mugs, there is no a clear answer to the question on if the HTV can be applied successfully or not. The results reached by the crafters that tried it vary from failure to full success. The only way to figure it out is to try it yourself.I hope this answer satisfy you. Answer: | Yes, it does! I’ve had this iron for almost a year and love it! |
Question: | What do you use to clean the sole plate? The steam vents are deep and large |
Answer: | I would use a dryer sheet ......just rub over it....there is an iron cleaner...it comes in a tube.....I never have had to clean my 360 iron.... Maybe before I used the above I would go on the Panasonic website and see if they had a suggestion. |
Question: | I am interested in buying this iron. My current iron leaks, which is a deal breaker for me. Has anyone had problems with the Panasonic iron leaking |
Answer: | I loved this iron till it started leaking like crazy. Ended up with water all over my sewing table that I didn't see till it was all over my owner manuel. |

Question: | Is there a way to override the auto shutoffs it will stay on. I need this feature for quilting |
Answer: | No, I haven't found anything that would override it. I also use it for quilting and would rather it stayed on. I found out later that the Rowenta Focus does stay on. If I had known that at the time, I would have purchased it instead. Hope this helps. |
Question: | what does 3 way auto shut off mean |
Answer: | The correct answer is that the iron will shut itself off if it is on and (1) you leave it flat for 30 sec., (2) tip it over for 30 sec., or (3) leave it vertical for 8 min. Unplugging the iron is not an AUTO turn-off. |
Question: | how can you tell when the steam iron is getting low on water - I can't even see how much I am putting in once it goes inside the iron |
Answer: | I can see the water level rise as I add water to the iron. You can see the level through the clear plastic cover. That said, this is a powerful iron that puts out a lot of steam. Therefore, it goes through a tank of water after I iron just two or three shirts. I am happy to refill the chamber as needed, since this powerful iron will take the wrinkles out of any fabric. |

Product description
The Velocity 230IR uses our patented 2 heating element and micro pump technology to provide our most advanced level of steam output with both eco and turbo temperature settings. Spitting and leaking are over as the 230IR turns the iron's water into steam before it reaches the soleplate. The iron's sensor technology means you have steam on demand when you need it. The anodized soleplate is the hardest, most scratch-resistant and best gliding material that exists for ironing. The Velocity 230IR has our patented technology of dual heating elements. What does it mean? Steam is produced by the built‐in steam generator and not in the soleplate, which is the case for all other irons. This ensures continuous steam even at low temperatures, without spitting and leaking. Other great features include sensor technology, eco and turbo settings, and more!
- ✓𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗡𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗬 Let the Velocity 230IR know you’re ready to steam by placing your hand around the handle – that’s where the sensor is located. This will automatically start the steam, allowing you to focus on the ironing.
- ✓𝗔𝗡𝗢𝗗𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗨𝗠 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 - Gliding smoothly along fabrics, the Velocity 230IR has a scratch-resistant soleplate that is superior to ceramic and conventional soleplates.
- ✓𝗬𝗢𝗨’𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 Ironing delicates and heavy fabrics in the same load? The Velocity 230IR has an AUTO setting that's safe for all fabrics, and a TURBO setting for heavier fabrics that need a little extra heat and steam.
- ✓𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗩𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥 Is continuous steam at low temperatures possible? Yes! With our patented dual heating element technology, water is heated before it reaches the soleplate, eliminating leaking and spitting.
- ✓𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗢 𝗢𝗙𝗙 & 𝗕𝗬𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗦 8 Minute auto-shutoff and the option to bypass it puts you behind the wheel, or rather, behind the iron! You can step away and come back to a hot iron that’s ready to keep going.
User questions & answers
Question: | How do you turn it on & off of it doesnt have a button |
Answer: | It automatically turns off after it has not been used for a certain period of time unless you press the steam button and hold for 5-6 seconds. The iron then stays on until you unplug it. In my case I have it plugged into a outlet that is controlled by a light switch. When I turn the switch off the iron shuts down. |
Question: | Does this iron make a beeping sound the whole time its plugged in |
Answer: | No it does not - I leave mine on all day - so then the green light (or the right hand light) on the front lights up and stops blinking, I press the button right underneath (that indicates steam) and hold it down until it beeps twice. The beeping stops after that and let's me iron all day. |
Question: | Can this iron be used without steam or does it automatically start steaming when you hold the handle |
Answer: | You fill it with water and iron with it. |
Question: | What is the difference between this 230ir and the 160ir |
Answer: | Hi Maryellen V. Little, 160IR - Has preset steam and temperature setting built in. No controls that you can set. 230IR - Has 4 temperature and 2 steam settings that you can set. For more information, please visit the website for Reliable Corporation. Hope this helps. Regards, |
