Answer:	You should determine the rod length based on the width of the window, rather than the curtains. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the rod (pole, not including finials) is at least capable of extending 2 inches wider than the outside of the window frame on both sides. I usually mount mine 4 inches outside the frame because it gives better light coverage at night. I find that these curtains drape most attractively with windows 35-45 inches wide, but one set also works sufficiently for a 50 inch wide window in my house. I used the adjustable-width rods for 33"-66" capacity with these curtains and it works fine. If you want fuller draping on windows 50"+, you may want to see how you like the look with one set, and then decide you want to put four panels across the window instead of two.

Answer:	I don't think the 80" will cover a 72" window when you allow for natural undulation of the fabric when drawn across the window, plus you will have shafts of light on either side because you are not extending the panel sufficiently beyond the window frame. For me, without a doubt, you need to buy 2 x 80" panels and you will be very happy.
Question:	what width rod do I need for the grommets to fit well
Answer:	You don't need to worry about the size of the rod as the grommets are 1 and 3/4 inches (I just measured) and most rods are smaller than that. Just make sure you get a rod long enough to overlap the width of your windows by a few inches on each side. The rod that I used is pewter and telescopes from 80 inches to 120 inches. Hope this helps!

However, if the light were to be blocked at the edges, a person would need to study the window carefully to discern whether the lights were on or off. Objects or people moving around within the room between a source of light and the curtains would not cast a shadow that could be detected from outdoors.

I would think they are 100 % blackout in the evening. During the day, I guess it all depends how much sun is coming in from your windows, but I think they do pretty well during the day also.
