12 best lamp oils
Lamp oil, also known as paraffin oil or kerosene, is a type of fuel commonly used in oil lamps for lighting purposes and is sometimes used in outdoor torches as well. It has been a popular choice for providing warm and ambient lighting in homes for many years. Here are some key points about lamp oil in relation to oil lamps and home decor:
Types of Lamp Oil: Lamp oil is available in various grades and types. Clear lamp oil is the most common and is colorless, while some variants may have a slight color or scent for decorative purposes.
Fuel for Oil Lamps: Lamp oil is used as fuel in oil lamps, which consist of a container for the oil, a wick, and a chimney or glass globe. The wick absorbs the oil and provides a controlled flame when lit.
Lighting and Ambiance: Oil lamps are cherished for their ability to create a warm, nostalgic, and cozy atmosphere in homes. They are often used for mood lighting, during power outages, or for outdoor events like weddings and garden parties.
Safety: When using lamp oil, safety precautions should be taken. Keep the lamp out of reach of children and pets, and ensure it is placed on a stable surface to prevent tipping over.Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to keep oil lamps in good working condition. This includes trimming the wick, cleaning the chimney or glass globe, and refilling the oil reservoir as needed.
Decorative Options: Oil lamps come in a variety of styles and designs, making them a versatile addition to home decor. You can find antique-style lamps, modern minimalist designs, and everything in between.
Scented Varieties: Some lamp oils are scented to add an extra dimension to the ambiance they create. Popular scents include lavender, vanilla, and citrus.
Smoke and Soot: While lamp oil is relatively clean-burning, it can produce some smoke and soot over time. Regular cleaning of the lamp and chimney can help minimize this.
Outdoor Use: Lamp oil is also used in outdoor torches, which can provide both lighting and insect repellent effects. These are often used in outdoor gatherings and events.
Alternative Fuels: In addition to traditional lamp oil, there are alternative fuels available for oil lamps, such as vegetable oil and olive oil. These can be more eco-friendly options.
Lamp oil and oil lamps have a long history and continue to be valued for their aesthetic and functional qualities in home decor and lighting. When used safely and properly, they can add a touch of elegance and nostalgia to any living space.

Question: | Is this lamp oil equivalent to / comparable with "Ultra-Pure" lamp oil |
Answer: | Lamplight Ultra-Pure is 99% liquid paraffin. The Nermitzva.com website indicates this lamp oil is also liquid paraffin, and other websites indicate it is 99% pure paraffin. |

Try our convenient 32 oz. of Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil complete with a screw-on pour spout. No more dripping. Firefly Fuel CLEAN Lamp Oil is a DIRECT REPLACEMENT for paraffin lamp oil and kerosene. A word to the wise, NEVER MIX FUELS or use a contaminated wick as mixing will change burning characteristics. Also, keep your wick 1/16" above the wick holder to conserve fuel and prevent smoke. Smoke is an indicator that the wick is set too high and the fuel is not completely burning
Firefly CLEAN lamp oil is smokeless, sootless, virtually odorless, provides a great flame and is longer lasting than paraffin oil. Firefly CLEAN Fuel is also safely packaged using childproof caps. Note: We compare our CLEAN Lamp Oil to OUR Paraffin Lamp oil only which is the highest grade you can purchase.
We recommend using CLEAN lamp oil in small-wicked devices such as oil candles, oil lamps and lanterns. We DO NOT recommend using this oil in large-wicked vessels like tiki torches as it will smoke. Additionally, Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil will perform adequately in Aladdin Magical Mantle Lamps. It will not provide as bright a flame as a 1-k kerosene, Kleen Heat or Aladdin Lamp Oil that have a 141-degree F - 145-degree F flash points. Firefly CLEAN lamp oil was designed specifically to perform best in cold-blast hurricane lanterns with flat wicks and small round-wick candles. The flash point is 220 degrees F.
CLEAN Lamp Oil is for indoor and outdoor use. Firefly does not add any colorants and uses commercial-style bottles with childproof caps for safety.
We electronically seal our bottles to prevent leakage and our packaging has been tested and approved to ensure the product gets to you in tip-top shape.
- NOT FOR USE IN FIRE PITS OR VESSELS REQUIRING AN ETHANOL-BASED FUEL. Alternative, longer burning fuel than paraffin lamp oil or kerosene - inhouse testing showed a significantly longer burn time. See the REVIEWS. Important: to achieve a smokeless burn, please review the User-Guide PDF which is found under Technical Specifications on this page below. We will send you a tips email detailing best-use practices. Please use as directed and you will have a great experience.
- KOSHER, CLEAN BURNING, ODORLESS, SMOKELESS & CLEAR - Be sure to use a NEW wick and keep the height as low as possible, about 1/16” above the wick holder. Maximum flame will be achieved in about 5 minutes. Also NEVER MIX our fuel with another fuel. Be sure to empty the vessel before adding Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil. It doesn’t have to be dishwasher clean. You can get even the purist fuel to smoke if the wick is too high or has been contaminated.
- SCREW-ON POUR SPOUT FOR EASY REFILLING: Included with every 32-Ounce bottle of Firefly Fuel which makes refilling your oil candles and oil lamps super easy. No more dripping. Have it on hand before the next emergency or hurricane hits. Recommended for indoor and outdoor use.
- USE RECOMMENDATIONS: For use in liquid oil candles, oil lamps & hurricane lanterns that use a small wick. Safe for Indoor & outdoor use. Please read the reviews where folks give 1 star. They are not using the fuel as directed. An informed consumer is our best customer. Approved for use with Firefly Colored Lamp Oil Dye
- WHERE NOT TO USE - Not for use in table-top fireplaces, effusion lamps or catalytic lamps that require gel fuel or alcohol-based fuels. Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil is NOT recommended for tiki torches or vessels using a wick larger than 3.6mm which is a little over 1/8” as it will smoke. (See Discussion Below)

Question: | Does it burn longer than say cheaper oils. I have a 3oz jar and let it burn continuous but in say 6-8 hrs the oil was gone |

Question: | i dont understand the difference between the citronella and eucalyptus. is one better than the other? what are there purposes? google is failing me |
Answer: | It's kerosene. Paraffin is the UK expression for Kerosene. |
Question: | What kind of oil is this made from? Is it Petroleum-based? Is it non-toxic |
Answer: | probably not. I would only use what is listed by the manufacturer. (alcohol produces a much higher temperature flame) |
Question: | I have a decorative glass burner with a wick inside. can i use this oil in it . also can i add a drop of essential oil for fragrance |
Answer: | Keep your wicks short, cut them once a week and it will be mostly odorless. I have 6 burning on one level of the house and my wife has 8 burning, i can smell no ick or bleh. Best oil i have used and we go through a lot so we have used many different companies products. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can scent be added to this oil |
Answer: | I feel that it does burn longer than the cheaper oils. When I burn a 3oz lamp continuously the oil will last, on average, about 10-12 hours before I have to refill the lamp. Also, the oiil lives up to its claims that it burns without fumes or odor. |
Question: | Can this item be used indoors |
Answer: | I stole this from another Amazon ad. Studies have shown Eucalyptus Oil deters insects. Be sure to read the PRODUCT DESCRIPTION below. We believe in providing as much information as possible so you can make an informed decision. If You're Interested in Repelling Mosquitoes, Our Eucalyptus Formula Outperforms Citronella Based on Feedback from Our Customers. There are also many studies supporting the effacacy of Eucalyptus Oil as a Serious Bug Deterrant.Manufacturers of High-Quality Tiki Torches Recommend Using a Top-Shelf Paraffin Lamp Oil for the Best Performance. Soot is also another consideration. Paraffin Lamp Oil is as clean burning and sootless as you can get. That's why it is recommended for indoor use.For Use in Tiki Torches, Oil Lamps, Lanterns & Candles. Indoor and Outdoor Use.Some Tips on How to Achieve the Best Performance - 1) Don't Mix Different Fuels. 2) Use a Clean, Uncontaminated Wick. 3) Keep the Wick Height to a Minimum which Inhibits Smoking and Conserves Fuel. |
Question: | Was wondering, i found 3 old german army laterns, was wondering how shabbos lamp oil would work in them? wide wick |
Answer: | Hi PJFirefly Clean lamp oil is refined and distilled from petroleum. The refining and distilling process removes the Firefly product from the base petroleum leaving a pure fuel that has similar properties of paraffin. It is toxic to drink but has virtually no smell and burns clean with no noxious fumes to speak of.Phil Tyson |
Question: | Can essential oils be added to this for use outside as repellent lamps |
Answer: | If your oil lamp requires a petroleum-based fuel, Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil is a good choice. This fuel works well in oil candles and cold-blast lanterns that use a small wick. Large-wicked vessels that use a large 1/2" wick like tiki torches are not recommended as the fuel will smoke. We don’t recommend adding scents or essential oil to our fuels for two reasons. 1) Adding scents will change the burning characteristics of the fuel and may produce soot and smoke 2) Adding essential oils is expensive. With the two caveats just said, some of our customers have successfully added scents. We have a better solution! We know folks love scents; so, we created refillable aromatherapy candles that use very little essential oil but provide the scent you want. User questions & answers
Question: | does the colored oil put off a colored flame or is the color just for show in a glass container |
Answer: | The 115-hour liquid candle oil is also clear paraffin oil. However, I did not have a good experience ordering from this company for this one gallon container. The shipment never arrived and they never responded to my contact attempts. Amazon did refund my money. I went to Ace Hardware and found liquid paraffin oil there. |
Question: | Is this oil non toxic |
Answer: | A very bright flame. This is very high quality oil. |
Question: | Will this oil work with fiberglass wicks |
Answer: | We have had no such problems with this. I have found it clean burning, but there is a bit of a faint oily smell in the room when used with our decorative burner. Still. it does the job and is pretty economical too. |
Question: | is this oil suitable for use in an old kerosene lamp |
Answer: | Liquid Paraffin Oil is the British/European term for Kerosene. It _IS_ of the kerosene family. A long time ago, /some/, not all, lamp oils underwent extra refining care to burn cleaner. However, Today, refining processes are so specialized that Kerosenes are very, very clean. Kerosene as liq. Paraffin Oil: $38/gal. (here you are paying a surcharge for your ignorance.) Kerosene as paint thinner: $8~$9/gal. Kerosene as fuel in 5gal container: $5/gal Kerosene as Jet-A from Self-serve airport pump: $4/gal It's all the same. Will work in any kerosene lamp. User questions & answers
Question: | Is the color of the oil the flame color |
Answer: | It's just for show. But it does look terrific. Flame is the same color as any normal flame from clear oil or a candle. |
Question: | Is this Kerosene or Liquid wax |
Answer: | It depends. If you are going to use it in your oil lamps then, well, it's sootless, smokeless, and odorless. If you are going to use it in your cakes or cookies - well, yes, it's toxic and harmful or fatal if swallowed. |
Question: | Can you add scented oil |
Answer: | One of my wicks is fiberglass and it is fine. Hope this helps. Sheila |
Question: | Whats the storage life of an UNopened (as in still factory sealed) container of this |
Answer: | If it has a flat wick bigger than 1/2" do not use paraffin oil in your kerosene lampParaffin Oil in the UNITED STATES is Liquid Candle Wax , and is mis-labeled for use in oil lamps and lanterns, when in fact it is only suited for Candle Oil Lamps that use small diameter (under 1/4",) round wick. 99% or 100% Paraffin Oil is NOT designed or suitable for use in tubular lanterns or oil lamps that use flat wick, or Kosmos or Matador type oil lamps. Further, it burns only 1/2 as bright of any of the approved fuels listed above. Paraffin oil has a much higher viscosity and a flash point of 200 degrees or higher, as compared to the flash point of 150 degrees for kerosene. These differences inhibit the necessary capillary action of the wick, and will cause Lamps and Lanterns with 7/8" or larger wick to burn improperly and erratic. Once a wick is contaminated with paraffin oil, it must be replaced in order for the lantern to burner properly. If you must use paraffin oil, it may be mixed 1:10 to 2:10 (one to two parts paraffin,) to ten parts standard lamp oil or kerosene so that it will burn satisfactorily. Paraffin Oil is sold in the United States under the following trade names, which should be avoided except for use with lamps or lanterns with 1/4" Round of 1/2" flat or smaller wick" |

Liquid Paraffin Lamp Oil will solidify at the freezing point of 32 degrees. It will turn to liquid again above 32 degrees without harm to the fuel.
Here are other considerations that may be of interest. Our plastic bottles are recylable. All Firefly Fuels use commercial-style bottles with childproof caps and there are NO inactive ingredients, such as colorants, which reduce purity.
And, what about leakage? We electronically seal our bottles to prevent leakage and our packaging has been tested and approved to ensure the product gets to you in tip-top shape.

User questions & answers
Question: | weirdly specific question - our church has nylon refillable candles that use liquid paraffin wax - will this work in them |
Answer: | I'm using it outdoors to keep Japanese beetles off my raspberries and blueberries. Works great for that. |
Question: | Is there a shelf life for this product after which it begins to degrade |
Answer: | That is a difficult question to answer since it depends on the device you are burning it in and how much of the wick you expose. I use the oil in a Desert Steel torch and it has a 4 ounce fuel tank and it burns for about 5 hours. So based on the math it says it has a burn rate of about 1 1/4 hours per oz. But I do have the wick exposed about an inch or so. The product is great producing no black smoke like most tiki torch oils do. Since I have my torched under an overhang so the clean burning aspect makes it a great product. |
Question: | Where is this product made |
Answer: | Hi Shaheen,All Firefly Fuels are intended to be used with wicked oil candles.I can't recommend the use of any Firefly Fuel in an oil warmer.Phil TysonFirefly Fuel |
Question: | Is this a smokeless oil |
Answer: | According to Firefly's website a tightly sealed bottle of lamp oil will last indefinitely. There are other precautions to follow also.
