Answer:	If by top you mean what is behind the top lip that is usually (in my case it is) covered by the credenza to which it was inserted. This is not meant to be a stand alone heater but is to be inserted into a cabinet. Any other area I would definitely not paint due to heat.

You may not like this piratical mantel but the measurements are what you are looking for. I would recommend this to you.

Question:	It calls for installation on a lintel - my old masonry fireplace doesn't have a lintel. Can I still use this product
Answer:	It would still work as long as the top of your opening is straight (across the top), and not curved, and if the opening size works for the unit you may get. The lintel doesn't really have anything to do with the way mine is installed, it's the opening size that's important, although some small adjustments can be made. BTW, my fireplace doesn't have a lintel either. The adjustments I made was to not use the brackets they sent with the unit, which would require the use of the lintel, instead I drilled four 5/16" holes on the four corners (evenly spaced) thru the face of the unit and used four 1/4" s/s wood screws about 3" long, and mounted the unit in place. I managed to secure the screws into the wood studs on the outside edges of the manufactured fireplace box; if you have brick or masonry, you could do the same thing but may have to use concrete anchors to secure the screws into. I was going to paint the screw heads black to match the face of the unit, but I liked the silver screws look after we were done, so i left them as they are. I believe my unit is much more secure the way I mounted it as well.

Answer:	I think pretty tight, although not "sealed", but it definitely makes a difference for us with wind noise and cold or hot airthat we use to get a lot of before installation. I feel confidant that they will also help with smoke smell.

Answer:	Yes it does. I purchased some with mine as I to had no idea what I would or wouldn't need and I now have a brand new roll of insulation that I have no use for. These doors come with everything you need, as for mine anyway, depending on how much room you have or maynot have any, you may only need some fireplace caulk to seal any gap you may have on the outsides of the frame.

Answer:	Yes it is. The mesh is different from the regular ones that are like a shower curtain. These are more like a screen door. There are 2 of them and they open on hinges. Remove the pins in the hinges and they will come out.
