13 best propane radiant heaters
Propane radiant heaters are a type of space heater that uses propane as a fuel source to produce heat. They are commonly used for heating spaces in various indoor and outdoor settings. Here's what you should know about propane radiant heaters:
Fuel Source: Propane radiant heaters are powered by propane gas. Propane is a clean-burning fuel that makes these heaters suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Radiant Heating: Unlike traditional convection heaters that warm the air, radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly heats people and objects in their proximity. This method of heating is highly efficient because it warms the intended area quickly.
Portability: Many propane radiant heaters are designed to be portable, featuring handles or wheels for easy movement. This makes them convenient for use in various locations, such as workshops, garages, patios, or construction sites.
Safety Features: Modern propane radiant heaters come equipped with safety features like tip-over switches and oxygen depletion sensors (ODS). These mechanisms help prevent accidents by shutting off the heater if it tips over or if oxygen levels become too low in an enclosed space.
Variable Heat Settings: Propane radiant heaters often have adjustable heat settings, allowing users to control the intensity of the heat output. This flexibility enables users to fine-tune the comfort level in their space.
Ignition Methods: These heaters can have different ignition methods, including manual ignition using a spark igniter or electronic ignition systems for ease of use.
Indoor and Outdoor Use: Propane radiant heaters are versatile and can be used both indoors and outdoors. They are often chosen for heating outdoor gatherings, workshops, or temporary construction sites.
Heating Capacity: The heating capacity of propane radiant heaters varies, so it's important to choose a model that matches the size of the space you intend to heat.Manufacturers provide guidelines for selecting the appropriate heater based on square footage.
Fuel Efficiency: Propane is known for its energy efficiency, and propane radiant heaters are no exception. They provide a steady and consistent source of heat without the need for electricity.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the heater and checking for any gas leaks, is essential to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Ventilation: While propane radiant heaters are suitable for indoor use, proper ventilation is crucial to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide. It's important to follow manufacturer guidelines and use these heaters in well-ventilated areas.
Regulations: Be aware of local regulations and safety codes that may govern the use of propane heaters, especially in commercial and indoor settings.
Propane radiant heaters are a reliable and versatile heating solution, particularly in spaces where electrical heating may not be practical. They offer efficient, portable, and controllable heat, making them popular choices for various heating needs. However, safety precautions and proper usage should always be observed when operating these heaters.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the 2 heating heads be rotated and if so, independently of each other |
Answer: | They can be rotated independently |
Question: | do you need electric to ignite |
Answer: | You do need thumbs, but no electricity. |
Question: | The burners light but switch off after i release the safety shut off valve plunger, no matter how long i keep it pushed in. it should stay lit |
Answer: | Not sure if you have your problem fixed yet. But I had the same problem awhile back. I pushed the sensor probe closer to the heat element. I was too far away to stay heated and keep the unit on. |
Question: | How long does a normal supermarket propane tank last with this unit |
Answer: | That depends first I have no idea what a "Supermarket propane Tank" is, if it is a standard 20lb propane tank which you see on every gas grill and on this illustration then I can answer that question. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, a 20 pound tank weighs 17 lbs empty and 37 lbs with 20 lbs of propane in it, a "full" 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it.Now we have to discuss this model of Mr. heater which has two burners, you can run it on one or both and you can set it for low medium or high which is many differentt total burn times, I will assume either one or both with no mixture of settings.Single burner approx. operating hr.: 52/Low 37/Med 30/HighBTU output: 8,000 12,000 14,000Double burner approx. operating hr.: 25/Low 18/Med 15/HighBTU output: 16,000 24,000 28,000 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the gas inlet located |
Answer: | If you are facing the front of the heater, the gas connection can be found on the lower right hand side coming from the rear. |
Question: | I am concerned about having to use a battery to ignite the pilot light. Is this a problem and are there other types of ignition systems |
Answer: | This uses a very small battery for ignition. The life of it is usually not an issue. |
Question: | After starting the unit up for the very first time and letting it heat up for 5 or so minutes my fire/smoke detectors went off, is this normal |
Answer: | I had a scenario where this heater made a serious billowing smoke show. Kicked the smoke detectors off immediately. Only happened 2- 3 times in a 2 ish year period. It happened with this propane heater too. Don't let this scare you though. Can happen with any infrared heater. It only happened several times over a period of about 2 years. So it probably only happened 1 out of a thousand times where the pilot light was on, but for some reason when it went to light up the burner bricks it malfunctioned and billowed out smoke like you wouldn't believe. Made it hard to get to the heater to turn it off. ALWAYS worked after simply turning it off, and ligting it up again. Maybe another reason why you must have working smoke detectors. Doesn't keep me from buying another one! Overcome your fears. Doesn't mean you won't first feel afraid if smoke suddenly starts pouring out of the kitchen. Lol. NEVER let your fears control you. Everything breaks it's just a matter of time. Keep safety # 1. |
Question: | what is the thermostat temperature range in degrees high/low |
Answer: | There is no real thermostat in Mr. Heater. It is more of a reostat the controls the time the 5 panels are on and off. At the number 1 setting the panels are on a short time and off a longer time. As you go from 1 up the panels stay on longer and the off time gets shorter. I have not been able to run on the 5 setting as the CO2 sensor turns the heater off after two cycles of setting 2. My external carbon dioxide sensor also goes off after 15 minutes of operation and on setting 2 and after the Mr Heater CO2 sensor turns off the propane. I would not recommend this heater to anyone. |

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work in the rain |
Answer: | This is a direct-fired tank top construction heater for indoor construction use only. The heater must be placedwhere it is NOT directly exposed to water spray, rain and/or dripping water. Its intended use is primarilythe temporary heating of buildings or structures under construction, alteration or repair. All the productsof combustion generated by the heater are released into the area being heated. This heater operates atapproximately 98%+ combustion efficiency but still produces a small amount of carbon monoxide. Humans cantolerate small amounts of carbon monoxide for short periods. Carbon monoxide can build up in a heated spaceand failure to provide adequate ventilation could result in poisoning or death. |

Question: | Does each burner hav its own indiependant shur-off valve |
Answer: | I only use that bulb as an additional basking site. I would not use it specifically for basking. I Have the 35 W bulb and at 9 inches I get a temperature of 110 to 112°. I Will be ordering the next size bulb due to the 35 W not being adequate enough .My terrarium is the same size as yours and you should use something like a160 W mega-Ray type Mercury vapor bulb. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I ordered one of these but can't seem to find info on how it actually hooks up to the propane tank. Also, does it come with a tank |
Answer: | It does not include a tank. You can get a Mr Heater hose that is 3/8 npt on one end and a tank fitting on the other end. The inlet on the heater is 3/8 npt. |
Question: | Can this heater run with only the pilot flame on |
Answer: | It is self-contained and automatic. The pilot setting will keep only the pilot burning. In heating mode it will automatically turn on and off at the desired temperature. The optional fan is not required but does not need to be plugged in if installed. |
Question: | Does this have plate for built in fan |
Answer: | Yes. Also wired for the fan so it is thermostatically controlled. Fan sold seperately. |
Question: | How low can the thermostat be set? Can it keep a room just above freezing |
Answer: | I use it to supplement my forced air heat. I would imagine in a room that is prone to freezing with the unit on it's lowest setting it would cycle quite a bit. It definitely kicks out a lot of heat. |
Question: | How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room |
Answer: | Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames. |
Question: | Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat |
Answer: | This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application. |
Question: | Does this product have built in regulator |
Answer: | You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting. |
Question: | Will this burn in high elevation |
Answer: | Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently. |

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

Question: | Does this come with a warranty |
Answer: | Hello, Both devices operate utilizing standard AA alkaline batteries. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Loyalty Team at 262-729-4850. We are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Jeff AcuRite Loyalty Team |
Question: | How many hours will one full tank run with this unit on medium setting |
Answer: | Whatever, the one I have is very dim and I can only view it by holding it. The thing says it has backlight, the manual says it, but it's not a feature. It also has a button "Signal" on the back that is not explained anywhere. It seems to work well enough, but it's impossible to read the screen in most places I have put it or hung it up. |
Question: | can this be used on a covered porch or screen porch |
Answer: | The manual suggests that the sensor can be out in the weather, as long as it isn't in the pouring rain. AcuRite sells a protective unit, here on Amazon, for a reasonable price to protect the sensor from full sun and rain and snow. Use Lithium batteries if you have it out in weather colder than 40 degrees (F). Right now it's 44 degrees on my patio in southern California. |
Question: | I admire everyone who has been able to get this thing started. The unit doesn't allow you to push in the knob once it hits Hi. Help please |
Answer: | Yes, the back is flat and it has a recessed hole in the back so it can be hung on a nail or screw. Once hung, it sits perfectly flat against the wall. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between the red one and the grey one besides the $10 price difference |
Answer: | I got a grey one over a year ago and the manual in it just showed "MH18B" model to hint everything is the same between them except color. Many are saying new ones have no fan where my only guess as to getting one with vs without would be the ones with 500+ reviews are "older" ones with fans, while newer ones have under 100 reviews so far. Otherwise they show the same model etc as if attempting to make it cheaper but hide the lack in features. |
Question: | Can you used this in a vehicle for a temporary |
Answer: | Yes you can, I use it when camping in my VW camper bus. I crack the front windows a little and I have slept with it on low all night in my bus in -10 degree weather. Heats the bus up super fast and makes changing your clothes a pleasure when warm |
Question: | Does this one have the fan |
Answer: | I doubt it. Since Oct last year Mr Heater quit adding fans to these heaters. I ordered one just before Christmas (but the listing with over 500 reviews) and that listing said in the description "Includes fan" and "Needs 4 D batteries". The one I got sent did have the fan. I'm assuming this listing is totally new and the description leaves that out, so I'd not expect it. I'm expecting the older listing to go away or be edited soon to show units with fans are not available (although they may have some left in stock for now). |
Question: | How long do the small propane tanks on the sides last for on average |
Answer: | two 1lb bottles will give you around 3 to 12 hours of heat (depending on what setting it’s on), whereas the two 20lb propane tanks last for 50 to 220 hours (again depending on the setting). http://tacticalintelligence.net/blog/mr-heater-big-buddy.htm I love mine kept us warm at 7k' 14 degrees F in a tent trailer |
- DUAL USE - Comes with hardware for mounting on walls or ceilings. Also comes with an adjustable tri pod stand
- CARBON INFRARED TECHNOLOGY - Produces heat that is similar to the heat produced by the sun. The infrared rays emitted are easily absorbed by the surfaces in the area of the heater, which increases the temperature of their surroundings. As cool surfaces heat up, infrared heaters raise the ambient temperature of the space.
- SAFETY FEATURES - A protective metal sheath covers the heating elements. This means animals and children can touch the surface of our heater without being burned. The Briza has a built in sensor that will automatically shutoff the unit if it is tipped over, eliminating the possibility of a fire hazard
- 4 SEASON PROTECTION - With an IP 55 rating the Briza can withstand any degree of the elements, whether its rain, snow, sand, or dust the Briza will stand up to the harshest outdoor conditions for years to come. It is also great for indoor uses for when you want to stay warm in the garage, shed or your home.
- EFFICENT HEATING - Infrared heaters can make you comfortable indoors or outdoors no matter what the temperature is. Inside the heater, a hot coil is wrapped into a circle so that all of the heat can be transferred evenly. The heat produced is reflected by a special polished metal, a reflector, and the heat can be felt several yards in front of the heater. Also, Brizas heaters aren't affected by drafts or wind.
- TRIPOD STAND - Reaches up to 7 feet and has adjustable legs that extend far out for a stable base that eliminates the need for sand bags, or if stability isn't a concern it can be adjusted for tighter spaces
- BUILT IN TIMER - Set the timer from 1-9 Hours for the heater to automatically power off
User questions & answers
Question: | What is the total square footage it should cover |
Answer: | Not this model, Dr 977Dr 975 they has enclosed motor |
Question: | Could you hang this from the ceiling using chains |
Answer: | Just doing a little search it looks like a NEMA 6-30. http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=74&start=50 It would plug into something like this I believe. http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-061-05372-000-Power-Receptacle-Flush/dp/B000P9UZ92/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387304424&sr=8-1&keywords=Nema+6-30 |
Question: | Amperage. This has to have amperage. What is the amount of amperage it uses |
Answer: | If you have the right setup, it's OK to use |
Question: | Can an extension cord be used |
Answer: | No, it's another type of 220V plug. You can either change the plug or the receptacle. Frankly I wouldn't bother as you will be lucky to get a week with this heater before the blower motor fails. |

Infrared Benefits
Infrared heaters produce heat that is similar to the heat produced by the sun. The infrared rays emitted are easily absorbed by the items in your home, which gently increases the temperature of their surroundings. As cool surfaces heat up, infrared heaters raise the ambient temperature of the room. Besides warming up your home, infrared heaters provide many other benefits.
The Latest Carbon Technology
- 93% heat efficiency, energy saving
- Infrared medium wave, infrared energy is easily absorbed by the human body
- Instant heat within SECONDS
- Ultra-low glare
More Benefits
Most heaters work through convection, gradually heating the surrounding air and letting it circulate until it's permeated the entire room, but infrared heaters emit a precise beam of heat that warms you directly by throwing out a steady stream of heat particles. With infrared heaters, you don't have to wait to warm up with you step in from the cold, like with ordinary heaters. You warm up rapidly, with fast acting heat rays that dispel the cold. They're also great if you're sitting on the couch or at your desk because their heat is focused on you and not the entire room.
Silent, Gentle & Healthy
Infrared space heaters work silently since they don't use a fan - they just radiate light! They're great for noise-sensitive environments such as bedrooms.
Hot coils are wrapped over the heat source so heat is transferred evenly. The heat is reflected by a polished metal so it extends out for several yards, creating a gentle, comfortable source of warmth.
Minimal Maintenance
The maintenance for infrared heaters is extremely minimal. Since there are no moving parts, there's no motor to wear out, air filters to replace or lubrication required. All you have to do is periodically clean the reflectors to keep your unit working perfectly.

Weather Proof
Whether its snow, rain or hail the Briza heater will always stand up to the elements. With a protective metal shielding no water or moisture will be able to effect the function of the heater.
Infrared Technology
Instead of warming the air like other conventional heaters, infrared heaters heat objects directly in their paths. Heating the air wastes energy and the benefits of the heat aren't felt immediately. The rays produced by infrared heaters penetrate and warm you beneath the skin.
Safety Features
With the automatic shutoff sensor the heater will automatically turn off if it ever senses that the unit has tipped over, therefore
Remote Control
All heaters come with a remote control so you can control your the power, heat level and timer from anywhere in the room or outdoor space.
