11 best propane heater for house
A propane heater for a house is a type of space heater that uses propane gas as its fuel source to generate heat and warm up a specific area or room within a home. These heaters are commonly used as supplementary heating sources and are particularly useful in areas where electricity or other heating methods might be less efficient or unavailable. Here are some key points about propane heaters for houses:
Fuel Source: Propane heaters use propane gas as their fuel source. Propane is a clean-burning and efficient fuel, making it suitable for heating applications.
Types: There are different types of propane heaters for houses, including wall-mounted heaters, portable heaters, and vented or ventless models. The choice of heater type depends on the specific heating needs and the layout of the house.
Efficiency: Propane heaters are known for their high energy efficiency, as they convert a significant portion of the propane's energy into heat. This can result in lower heating costs compared to electric heaters.
Portability: Portable propane heaters are easy to move around and can be used in various rooms or even outdoors. They often come with built-in handles or wheels for convenience.
Safety Features: Modern propane heaters come equipped with safety features such as tip-over switches and oxygen depletion sensors (ODS).These features help prevent accidents and ensure safe operation.
Ventilation: Some propane heaters require proper ventilation, especially vented models. Ventless propane heaters are designed to operate safely indoors without the need for external ventilation but still require adequate room ventilation.
Heating Capacity: Propane heaters come in various sizes and heating capacities. It's essential to choose a heater that can adequately heat the space you intend to use it in.
Installation: Wall-mounted propane heaters may require professional installation to ensure they are safely connected to the propane supply and properly vented.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including cleaning the burner and checking for gas leaks, is essential for the safe and efficient operation of propane heaters.
Cost: The cost of propane can vary depending on location and market conditions. It's essential to consider both the initial cost of the heater and ongoing fuel costs when deciding if a propane heater is a cost-effective heating solution for your home.
Propane heaters can be a valuable addition to your home's heating system, especially in areas with cold winters or during power outages. However, it's crucial to follow safety guidelines and manufacturer instructions when using propane heaters to ensure safe and efficient operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room |
Answer: | Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames. |
Question: | Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat |
Answer: | This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application. |
Question: | Does this product have built in regulator |
Answer: | You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting. |
Question: | Will this burn in high elevation |
Answer: | Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently. |

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

Answer: | You can mount this model to the floor but requires the purchase of compatible legs (not included but available). You could look up the manual for more information. |
Question: | Set on high, how many pounds will this use an hour |
Answer: | Depending on your need and outside ambient temperature, it has been very useful for me. I have an outside patio that is my daily environment for TV and smoking, it works very well. Depending on the outside temperature (24-49) I use about 1- 20lb propane tank every 8-14 days, depending upon how warm I want to feel (65-70 degrees). It breaks down to about 2-3 dollars a day. Well worth the cost. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It warns against using in elevations higher than 4,500 FT. Have you had success at |
Answer: | Yes, there have been units with success over 4,500 ft, what this means is we aren't able to guarantee successful operation of these heaters are higher than 4,500 ft. |
Question: | How many hours or days will it run with a 20# bottle |
Answer: | I recently insulated a 14’ x 20‘ workshop attachment on my garage. I got this heater and before I bought a big tank I tried it on a 10 pound tank from my grill. It was set on number one setting the temperature outside was in the 30s and I got 64 hours out of it holding just over 60°. So I figure a 20 pound bottle should last me little over five days. So I’m going to get a 30 pound bottle that way I only have to refill about once a week. Warmer weather less often, I hope this helps. |
Question: | It dont tell the dimensions? Is it 20" wide |
Answer: | The dimensions for the heater are 23 3/4" W x 11 1/4" D x 27" H. |
Question: | Can u use propane tank from a grill and how long would it last |
Answer: | Quick math says about 17 hrs on full tank. This heater has a high and low output, controlled by the thermostat, not the user. One gallon propane would last approx 4 hours. A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.5 gallons. |
Question: | how long does it last on a small propane tank |
Answer: | The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack. |
Question: | Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it |
Answer: | As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix. |
Question: | Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on |
Answer: | Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer |
Question: | how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle |
Answer: | A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will unit work with 20 lb propane tank |
Answer: | I agree that the 20 gal. tank won't last very long...........we have ours hooked up along with several others, to a 1000 gal tank. Works great there.... |
Question: | I am looking to use something like this unit for backup heat for all electric house. Can this be hooked up to a LP gas bottle like on a charcoal gri |
Answer: | Yes. Just make sure the unit is configured for LP. Thes units can also work with natural gas but it is an either/or situation. A 30K BTU unit will burn through a 20 lb (grill size) tank in 2-3 days depending or demand. Good idea to test usage before you actually need it. |
Question: | how many square feet will it heat |
Answer: | I heat 900 square feet insulated garage in bitter cold northern Minnesota on the 1st setting. I have had to turn it up to 2nd setting for some people to be comfortable. Its a great heater very happy with it. |
Question: | I'm purchasing this heater to hook up to a large outside propane tank w/ regulator. Do I need to purchase the hookup kit |
Answer: | you should have your local propane provider run the necessary piping if none exists yet. If it is already set up, you should be able to tie into the tank yourself, but check out the local regulations, as you may have to be a licensed plumber to avoid any insurance issues should something go wrong. At any rate you should not need the hookup kit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |
