14 best portable propane heater for car
Portable propane heaters for cars are compact heating devices designed to provide warmth in vehicles when traditional heating systems may not be sufficient or available. These heaters are commonly used for camping, outdoor activities, and emergency situations. Here is some information about them:
Fuel Source: Portable propane heaters for cars use propane gas as their primary fuel source. Propane is stored in small canisters or tanks, making it convenient for use in a portable heater.
Heat Output: These heaters typically produce a significant amount of heat and can warm up the interior of a car or small space quickly. The heat output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units).
Safety Features: Many portable propane heaters include safety features such as tip-over protection and oxygen depletion sensors. These features help prevent accidents and ensure safe operation in confined spaces.
Ignition System: They often feature a piezoelectric ignition system, which allows for easy and safe ignition without the need for matches or lighters.
Adjustable Settings: Most portable propane heaters come with adjustable heat settings, allowing you to control the level of warmth and conserve fuel when needed.
Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is essential when using portable propane heaters in a car or enclosed space. They release carbon monoxide (CO) during operation, which can be harmful in high concentrations. It's crucial to crack windows or use them in well-ventilated areas to ensure proper air circulation.
Portability: These heaters are designed to be lightweight and easy to transport. They often have built-in handles for convenient carrying.
Use Cases: Portable propane heaters for cars are commonly used in various scenarios, including camping trips, fishing, tailgating, and as emergency heating solutions during power outages or breakdowns in cold weather.
Fuel Canisters: Propane heaters typically require disposable propane canisters or can be connected to larger propane tanks using appropriate adapters. The choice of fuel source depends on the heater's design and intended use.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including cleaning and checking for any gas leaks, is essential to ensure the safe and efficient operation of these heaters.
Safety Precautions: It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines when using portable propane heaters. This includes proper storage of propane canisters, keeping the heater stable on a flat surface, and ensuring that the heater is turned off when not in use.
Compatibility: Make sure the heater you choose is suitable for use in a vehicle and follows any local regulations or safety standards.
Portable propane heaters for cars can be valuable for staying warm in cold conditions when traveling or spending time outdoors. However, safety should always be a top priority when using these heaters, and users should be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide emissions and take appropriate precautions.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you HANG this from something |
Answer: | YES you can hang this heater. It's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVX6mh8O4 |
Question: | Does anybody have trouble lighting this heater? Seems I need to hold the ignition button in for a minute and it really hurts my thumb |
Answer: | Hey Spike, I agree with Thomas W. Mine wouldn't start on the first try either. You have to hold the ignition button down, wait a few seconds, then depress again. It's kind of a pain, but it works. A more annoying issue for me was wanting to use it in my golf cart, but with every tiny bump, the safety feature kicked in and off it went. So, it is safer for home use. For the cart, I bought the Coleman Catalytic Heater with the special holder that fits in the cup holders. It's more quiet too. Stay warm! |
Question: | With an adapter hose can it be used with a large propane cylinder |
Answer: | Not a problem. Make a 10"x10" box. Nail 2x6 together in the shape of a U. Then put 3/8" inch plywood on top and bottom (3/8" a must on top). Then make a 2 1/4" hole in the center of the top plywood. Next screw the main heater assembly into the filter with the top plywood in between (the two should come together snug leaving a very small separation which will allow the heater to rotate with no chance of a leak but still be secure). Then attach the hose and tank. This box allows for a large tank to be attached, the heater can rotate and the tipsy problem is gone.. Just remember to turn off the tank first to burn up the gas in the line before turning off the heater. |
Question: | Has anyone used it tent camping? I'm afraid of fire and fumes, but the cub scouts insist in camping in sub freezing temps |
Answer: | I used it last summer (2017), at night We went to bed late around 1:00 am, and usually by 5:00 am the 1lb tank is already empty and it's went the temp is the lowest, I spent about a tank per night, kept our 8 person tent warm, we have ventilation at the top and all the heat went up but I rather have ventilation that non at all, I'll probably wake up at 5 and replace the propane tank. We camped I bigbear, CA and it was cold at night, I might try an electric heater plugged into my Honda but still you have Carbon monoxide coming from the generator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the system waterproof if left outside |
Answer: | I don't know that it is rated to be outside all the time, But we have owned ours for almost a year now and a coulee of times, it has been rained on and works fine,. However it is charged by electrical connections, and when mine got rained on, it was not plugged in if you will, I cant picture rain being good for the electrical plugs the attach to this unit. But a once or twice accident you should be fine, ours still works. |
Question: | Can I replace the shower head with one that has a on and off switch |
Answer: | not without a bit of work |
Question: | what are the error codes? I get three blinks and sometimes five blinks.... just trying to figure out what is wrong |
Answer: | I haven’t had any error codes per say. It could be that the internal battery needs charging. I just plug it in to charge the internal battery. I hope this helps. I love this little thing. Although I do wish the internal battery lasted longer. I charged it before I went camping I used it to heat dish water and some cooking for 10 twice a day for three days. It worked great. Water gets real hot. |
Question: | can you use indoors |
Answer: | It says not to use it indoors but we use it in a cabin that has no running water. We don't use it for extended periods at anytime. It has never set off our C O detector. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I buy just |
Answer: | I've used it with my beard dry, wet after a shower and after applying beard balm. Dry is the best way to use it. With oils or balms, it will change the smell as it is burning the oils. That also results in smoke coming off the brush until it's all burned off. If you use it wet, you'll notice it steams a lot which can be a bit uncomfortable. So, yes, you can use it with oil in your beard, but it's best to use it dry and apply balms and oils after it's straightened. |
Question: | Are you able to adjust the temperature adjustable |
Answer: | Hi, you do not need to use Argan oil or a heat protection spray with argan oil, but it is an added layer of protection. Argan oil is believed to have many uses, one of which is helping to hydrate and soften your hair/beard. Because of its high content of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E, it is thought that Argan oil can naturally help increase your beard or hair elasticity and consistently restore shine. The brush works best on a clean, healthy, well-conditioned beard, and we offer an orange walnut beard soap in our premium grooming kit (also sold on Amazon) that cleans and conditions the beard. We would recommend using the soap prior to using the brush. |
Question: | Do you get 2 cup holder adapters |
Answer: | well for you only needing 25 gallons your best bet is to buy the 50 GPD and always have the extra water for your tank me I bought the 150 GPD and this is the 3rd one I have several tanks so I need the water this is by far the best R/O system and for the price you can't beat this anywhere trust me as a hobbyist and breeder this is the best out there works great easy install and it does put out the R/ O water like it tells you it does I recommend this product to anyone wanting great R/O water for fish so I hope this helps with your question and I hope this helps any other Hobbyist make the decision to buy this Product |
Question: | How does the heater hook directly into a propane tank and fit in a cup holder adapter |
Answer: | RO systems tend to remove the pH by 1-2 points. The focus is to remove all the TDS and other contaminants like fluoride, lead, chlorine, arsenic etc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for heating a 9x20' garage with the door open in the winter (nj)? how loud if we are sitting in the garage in chairs? fan force |
Answer: | Hi, Honda specifies the Rancher is 84.6 inches long, so you will want the Medium for a perfect fit on ATV's up to 85 inches. |
Question: | So it needs to be plugged in AND hooked up to propane |
Answer: | I bought a medium for my Grizzly 700 and it completely covers it down to the wheels, however I don't like to trap moisture or provide a home for mice so I use the elastic to tighten at mid wheel level. They seem to run large. Yours depends on the height of the windshield. I would expect that a large would be more than enough for a 570, maybe even a medium depending on how far you want to cover. I only cover mine in the winter between snow plowing so I don't have to spend time clearing the snow off it. |
Question: | How long will a 20 lb full tank last |
Answer: | You should verify the ATV dimensions with the sizing chart on the listing, but we recommend a Medium for your 500 sportsman. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the lowest temperature setting (I want to keep my garage at 35 degrees so my boat doesn't freeze |
Answer: | Any structure drywall or otherwise should be kept around 50 degrees with good air circulation because it will rot the structure you won't see mold but it'll be growing in between the walls behind the drywall on the back side of the drywall and that makes for a sick house sick building and a sick you be very careful what you do you can't save any money there's no such thing it's a joke it's something children believe things have to be maintained or they fall apart. What I think works well is a electric element oil-filled radiator with a box fan sitting behind it. Those radiators last forever forget infrared heaters what I just described is as good as it gets trust me there's no magic |
Question: | How does it affect power bill. Can it be used for main source of heat in Living room and other rooms |
Answer: | Depending on where you live, your power cost is ~$.10/kWh. At max power, this is 1.5kW. If you run it on high for 10 hours per day, you can calculate as follows: Daily Cost = ($.10/kWh)(1.5kW)(10 hours) = $1.50 |
Question: | Would this work well for warming up a 500 sq ft garage with no insulation |
Answer: | I have an 850 sq ft garage without insulation. The ambient temperature outside a couple of days ago was 8F. I had the heater set 85F my garage stayed between 80F-82F. I would say it will do very well in your garage! |
Question: | What's BTU for this unit |
Answer: | The answer is simple. On the 1000 watt setting it produces 3412 BTU. On the 1500 watt setting, it produces 5118 BTU. EVERY electric heater on the planet produces the exact same amount of BTUs per watt of electricity consumed. It is governed by a mathematical formula, not how pretty the design is or whether it uses nichrome wire or ceramic tubes. One watt is equal to 3.412142 BTU per hour. This heater, on its 1500 watt setting, will produce exactly the same amount of heat as a 1500 watt hair drier, or the cheapest electric heater you can find that consumes 1500 watts. |

Question: | How many hours or days will it run with a 20# bottle |
Answer: | I recently insulated a 14’ x 20‘ workshop attachment on my garage. I got this heater and before I bought a big tank I tried it on a 10 pound tank from my grill. It was set on number one setting the temperature outside was in the 30s and I got 64 hours out of it holding just over 60°. So I figure a 20 pound bottle should last me little over five days. So I’m going to get a 30 pound bottle that way I only have to refill about once a week. Warmer weather less often, I hope this helps. |
Question: | It dont tell the dimensions? Is it 20" wide |
Answer: | The dimensions for the heater are 23 3/4" W x 11 1/4" D x 27" H. |
Question: | Can u use propane tank from a grill and how long would it last |
Answer: | Quick math says about 17 hrs on full tank. This heater has a high and low output, controlled by the thermostat, not the user. One gallon propane would last approx 4 hours. A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.5 gallons. |
Question: | how long does it last on a small propane tank |
Answer: | The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack. |
Question: | Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it |
Answer: | As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix. |
Question: | Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on |
Answer: | Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer |
Question: | how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle |
Answer: | A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder. |

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | I know it says it has a fan but Mr. Heater removed fans from some models. Is this one of those models |
Answer: | The low voltage fan and switch IS NOT on this unit. There is a kit that can be ordered from another party that consist of the entire rear panel. It has the wiring an hardware attached to it with the switch, battery case and external low voltage plug for a transformer power supply. It is as simple as 4 screws to install. Mine was under $40. I could not find this larger heater WITH the fan anywhere. Many say it has the fan in the remarks but is not included. I hope this helped. Jack, Dayton OH. |
Question: | Is this safe to use indoors? Like gas wise |
Answer: | Many fear that anything burning gas will be like running a generator indoors that will kill you in 10 minutes. I understand such a concern, but this is much more like someone running a gas stove burner used in half the houses, that doesn't kill anyone in 10 minutes while warming water for coffee or such (does it?) It burns clean enough that there isn't the carbon-monoxide like from a generator. I ran the smaller version (Buddy) for 24 hours to do a "power outage drill" with freezing temps out to see what it's like with a CO detector set up, the CO unit never went off. I did go outside a few times like to get the mail and when coming back inside I could smell a bit of the "Burned gas", but it wasn't so bad to need to run back out. So you do want to consider such, but it's not a panic item. The manual does suggest cracking a window for some ventilation, but others say "That's letting your heat out in freezing conditions and stupid!" So it's up to you to perhaps do some experiments and come to your own conclusions. There's always the thoughts on possible gas leaks to check for before any use, so don't be afraid to do that. If using a hose and refillable tank, here's a simple leak check I do. With everything connected and heater off, open the tank valve watching how the hose "jumps" when getting pressurized, then close the tank valve, wait 1-2 minutes, then open it again watching for another "Jump" in the hose. If it does jump again, that means gas leaked out over the 2 minutes, otherwise no jump means it held pressure. It is against fire codes to have a refillable tank inside (anything except 1 pound tanks), so I think that can give you another purpose in having a window cracked, yet I've seen a video on another heater that uses those big tanks with it shown used in a garage (despite the "Outdoor use only" label showing somewhat contradictory info). So lots to consider in using these including the surface it sits on (they warn "May cause floor fading or vinyl damage"). |
Question: | What size propane can does the heater use |
Answer: | It has places for 2 of the small 1 pound tanks like you find in the camping section of stores like Walmart, Target, etc. You can also get a hose like the F273704 by Mr Heater and go to any bigger tank you want (like the 20 pound BBQ ones, or bigger or smaller). On high this will burn the 2 pounds from small tanks in 3 hours, so running it 12 hours in a good shop will burn near half a 20 pound tank in a day. Many like the bigger tanks for both length it runs and propane can go for $3 a gallon in bigger tanks vs $3 a quart in those disposable tanks. |
Question: | Can this heater be used inside a camper |
Answer: | Sure it can. I live full time in a 40 foot RV and use a Mr. Heater Big Buddy that is hooked to a external 30lb tank. Then my other main heater is a Olympian Wave 8 that is plumbed into my RV's propane line. It produces no C02 when its in use but it does consume oxygen so as a result your ceiling vent should be cracked open a inch or two. For every pound of propane used there is X amount of ounces of water that is released in the form of water vapor. Having a window ajar releases this out of the camper. You can also get a dehumidifier to deal with that. You will instantly know this if you use this with no windows open ... your windows will be covered in condensation. You might think leaving a window open will let the cold in ... quite the opposite. It creates a convection current that aids in the heating of your camper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work in the rain |
Answer: | This is a direct-fired tank top construction heater for indoor construction use only. The heater must be placedwhere it is NOT directly exposed to water spray, rain and/or dripping water. Its intended use is primarilythe temporary heating of buildings or structures under construction, alteration or repair. All the productsof combustion generated by the heater are released into the area being heated. This heater operates atapproximately 98%+ combustion efficiency but still produces a small amount of carbon monoxide. Humans cantolerate small amounts of carbon monoxide for short periods. Carbon monoxide can build up in a heated spaceand failure to provide adequate ventilation could result in poisoning or death. |
