User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I ordered one of these but can't seem to find info on how it actually hooks up to the propane tank. Also, does it come with a tank |
Answer: | It does not include a tank. You can get a Mr Heater hose that is 3/8 npt on one end and a tank fitting on the other end. The inlet on the heater is 3/8 npt. |
Question: | Can this heater run with only the pilot flame on |
Answer: | It is self-contained and automatic. The pilot setting will keep only the pilot burning. In heating mode it will automatically turn on and off at the desired temperature. The optional fan is not required but does not need to be plugged in if installed. |
Question: | Does this have plate for built in fan |
Answer: | Yes. Also wired for the fan so it is thermostatically controlled. Fan sold seperately. |
Question: | How low can the thermostat be set? Can it keep a room just above freezing |
Answer: | I use it to supplement my forced air heat. I would imagine in a room that is prone to freezing with the unit on it's lowest setting it would cycle quite a bit. It definitely kicks out a lot of heat. |
Question: | How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room |
Answer: | Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames. |
Question: | Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat |
Answer: | This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application. |
Question: | Does this product have built in regulator |
Answer: | You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting. |
Question: | Will this burn in high elevation |
Answer: | Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently. |
Product features
Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will unit work with 20 lb propane tank |
Answer: | I agree that the 20 gal. tank won't last very long...........we have ours hooked up along with several others, to a 1000 gal tank. Works great there.... |
Question: | I am looking to use something like this unit for backup heat for all electric house. Can this be hooked up to a LP gas bottle like on a charcoal gri |
Answer: | Yes. Just make sure the unit is configured for LP. Thes units can also work with natural gas but it is an either/or situation. A 30K BTU unit will burn through a 20 lb (grill size) tank in 2-3 days depending or demand. Good idea to test usage before you actually need it. |
Question: | how many square feet will it heat |
Answer: | I heat 900 square feet insulated garage in bitter cold northern Minnesota on the 1st setting. I have had to turn it up to 2nd setting for some people to be comfortable. Its a great heater very happy with it. |
Question: | I'm purchasing this heater to hook up to a large outside propane tank w/ regulator. Do I need to purchase the hookup kit |
Answer: | you should have your local propane provider run the necessary piping if none exists yet. If it is already set up, you should be able to tie into the tank yourself, but check out the local regulations, as you may have to be a licensed plumber to avoid any insurance issues should something go wrong. At any rate you should not need the hookup kit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi I received the ignition control board # 60105 everything is good except the white multi plug is male and the old plug is female is there a adapter |
Answer: | I found a service note regarding this issue that indicated older style boards with female plugs also need an additional new wiring harness. These boards were made by NOVAR Controls and were marked near the Y C W G R screw connections. The NOVAR Control boards can be replaced but need a new 60104 Ignition Control Wire Harness. |
Question: | Where is this manufactured |
Answer: | I never looked to see who the manufacturer was. All I know is that it solved my problem with the heater and now its working great. It was easy to install as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a thermostat |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Where can I find a battery for this heater |
Answer: | It's a Mr. Heater F227964 battery. They don't stock them any longer but I have seen them on ebay. You could also try a store that specializes in only batteries, like BatteriesPlus, just take the old battery in with you. Its a 12V / 5ah Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery - 3.88" x 3.38" x 2.63". MIne went dead years ago and I just use the power cord. |
Question: | Does this come with the hose hook up |
Answer: | The heater will include hose, regulator and charging cord. The tank is not included. |
Question: | Does the heater run on electricity also |
Answer: | The heater runs on both electric or the battery but both require propane to heat. The electric or battery run the fans and ignite the propane. The battery will charge whenever it is plugged in. Overall a great little heater that heats my 500+ sq ft insulated garage from 30F to 70F in a little over and hour. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I run this on a longer extension cord |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry; Ye, remember the longer the run the lower gauge wire extension cord should be used. |
Question: | Does this heater have a N6-50R 240 volt plug |
Answer: | It has an Nema 6-20R plug. 240v, 20amp |
Question: | I do not have a 240 outlet where can I buy adapter to fit 110 outlet can I return for another one |
Answer: | It is made for 240 volts. If you use it with 120, you will get 1/2 the heat and the fan won't work right. |
Question: | When in heating mode, is it normal for the fan to run continuously even when the heating elements are cycled off by the thermostat? My fan never stops |
Answer: | My heater did the same thing. I know it may not be the right thing to do but I pulled the wire off the switch that make the fan run all the time. The internal thermostat will turn the fan on when the heater gets hot and will shut down the fan after it cools. |
