10 best wood burning furnace for heating

A wood-burning furnace is a heating appliance that uses wood as its primary fuel source to produce heat for a home or building. Here's what you should know about wood-burning furnaces:

  1. Heating Method: Wood-burning furnaces generate heat through the combustion of wood logs or wood pellets. They typically consist of a firebox where the wood is burned, a combustion chamber, and a heat exchanger that transfers the heat to the air or water used to heat the space.

  2. Efficiency: Wood-burning furnaces can vary in terms of efficiency, with some models designed to maximize heat output while minimizing fuel consumption. Higher-efficiency furnaces often feature advanced combustion technologies and insulation to retain heat.

  3. Heat Distribution: Wood-burning furnaces can distribute heat in various ways:

    • Forced Air: Many wood furnaces use a blower to distribute hot air through a system of ducts, delivering warm air to different rooms in the house.
    • Hydronic Systems: Some wood furnaces are integrated with hydronic heating systems, which heat water that is then circulated through radiators or in-floor heating pipes.
    • Combination Systems: There are also combination furnaces that can burn both wood and other fuels like oil or gas, providing versatility in heating options.
  4. EPA Certification: In some regions, wood-burning appliances, including furnaces, need to meet certain environmental standards and obtain EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) certification. EPA-certified wood furnaces are designed to burn wood more efficiently, with reduced emissions, helping to minimize their environmental impact.

  5. Installation: Proper installation is essential for the safe and effective operation of a wood-burning furnace. It typically involves setting up the furnace in a well-ventilated area, connecting it to the home's heating distribution system, and ensuring compliance with local building codes and safety regulations.

  6. Fuel Source: Wood is the primary fuel source for these furnaces, and it's important to use seasoned firewood with low moisture content for efficient and clean combustion. Some models are compatible with wood pellets, which are a more convenient and efficient fuel option.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to keep a wood-burning furnace operating efficiently and safely. This includes cleaning the chimney, inspecting the flue, and ensuring that the furnace's components are in good working condition.

  8. Safety: Safety precautions are essential when operating a wood-burning furnace. This includes proper storage of firewood, ensuring adequate ventilation in the area where the furnace is located, and using appropriate safety equipment and procedures when loading and igniting the wood.

  9. Cost and Efficiency: The cost of operating a wood-burning furnace can be influenced by factors such as the type of wood used, the furnace's efficiency, and the local cost of fuel. While wood can be a cost-effective heating source in some areas, it requires effort in terms of sourcing and handling the fuel.

Wood-burning furnaces can be an effective and sustainable heating option for homes, especially in areas with abundant access to firewood. However, their use requires careful consideration of safety, efficiency, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and environmental responsibility.

HY-C MH-6R Magic Heat Bottom Crimp Heat Reclaimer for Use with Wood Burning Appliances, UL Listed, Fits 6" Single Wall Chimney Pipe

HY-C

Based on 236 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Magic Heat is the only UL listed heat reclaimer on the market. Magic Heat reclaims up to 30% of lost heat form your heating appliance and distributes it into your home using only .31 amp of power, roughly equivalent to a 40 watt lightbulb. Magic Heat is designed for heating appliances with inside flue temperatures exceeding 350 degrees and surface temperatures of the single wall pipe below the Magic Heat exceeding 280 degrees. The bottom crimp design makes this unit ideal for wood burning heating applications by containing any creosote within the chimney. A toggle switch allows the 225 CFM fan to operate in two modes, either run continuously or a pre-set thermostat automatically turns the blower fan on when the Magic Heat casing reaches 150 degrees and off at 120 degrees. Magic Heat is easy to install and must be installed between 12 and 24 inches from the appliance flue outlet using single wall connector pipe. How it works: As hot flue gases travel from your heating appliance upward through the flu, they heat the transfer tubes in the inner case. Fresh room air enters thru the back vents and is heated while traveling through the transfer tubes. The 225 CFM fan pushes out the warmed air through the tubes and into your home reclaiming up to 30,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) of lost heat. Flue gases are not restricted and continue up your chimney. Magic Heat is available in 6", 7" and 8" pipe diameters for wood, oil/coal or natural gas burning heating appliances. Manufactured in the USA.

  • Only UL listed heat reclaimer on the market. Reclaims up to 30% of otherwise lost heat going up your chimney and distributes it into your home.
  • Crimp down configuration is designed for use with wood burning heating applications with inside flue temperatures exceeding 350 degrees and surface temperatures of the single wall pipe below the Magic Heat exceeding 280 degrees.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use stove if the power goes out
Answer: It's meant to be programmed to a garage door. Doesn't interfere with any other programmed opener. Easy directions. I programmed mine to daughters 2 car garage, different codes for each door...do 1 at a time per directions.
Question: Can I mount unit closer than 12” to top of wood stove
Answer: Multibutton transmitter (remote control). Compatible with all Overhead Door CodeDodger (abbreviation: CD. CD/A or CD/B) and Genie Intellicode garage door openers.
Question: Does this work best with non-catalytic stoves
Answer: Yes, purchased a new OCDTR-3 remote a couple months ago for my Overhead Door OCG550 Python which was installed in 1998. Please note that as mentioned on-line by others, only the far right hand button on the remote operates the door but that's good enough for me!
Question: Do you ever have to take the unit off to clean? Or is that middle knob that pulls in & out, does the cleaning for you
Answer: If it is an Overhead Model door and has a programmable button on the back of the motor it should work. I can't guarantee it 100% but it should work.

How It Works

As hot flue gases travel from your heating appliance upward through the flue, they heat the transfer tubes in the inner case. Use Magic Heat to Save Lost Heat!

  • Magic Heat’s ten heat transfer tubes maximize the surface area required to effectively exchange heat. The built in soot scraper cleans tubes internally allowing for maximum heat transfer.
  • Magic Heat is the only UL-listed heat reclaimer on the market because it does not reduce the flue diameter. The open inner casing design allows hot flue gases to travel upward without restriction.

User questions & answers

Question: When you buy wood pellets by the ton are they in bags or are they loose
Answer: Almost all SN+ 5w20 and 5w30 oils are now blends. Valvoline is simply updating their containers. There was plenty of group III stock in there even when it was called a conventional.
Question: How do you get it to burn hot
Answer: No
Question: How long will a full basket burn
Answer: YES.
Question: I have a regular wood stove. Is it safe to burn pellets
Answer: I don't know about this specific model--mine is a 400C. However, I can tell you what to look for on yours: you should find an access door that opens up below the 'fire box'--this is about 4-5 inches in height. You'll need enough room to place the fan assembly, a source of 110V electricity, and a place to locate the sensor which is magnetized and will 'stick' on the underside of the firebox.

Large Pellet Basket, Heating Source Using Wood Pellets in Your Wood Stove or Fireplace

Based on 60 reviews Check latest price

Product description

A pellet basket is a metal basket that sits inside a woodstove and burns wood pellets; eliminating the need for electric and natural gas. Pellet baskets are a lower - cost alternative to pellet stoves. Simply place the basket in your wood stove, fill it with wood pellets, light the pellets with gel firestarter. Add more pellets, when needed. Scoop the hot pellets to one side with a metal scoop, add new pellets next to the hot pellets. The hot pellets will ignite the new pellets. Always adjust your flue for a safe working temperature. Any questions concerning sizing, please contact us before ordering.

  • Dimensions are 17" Wide X 8" Deep X 9.5" High
  • Basket weights 16 lbs and holds 16 lbs of wood pellets
  • 1/4 inch thick, non - perforated
  • Heavy Duty All Welded
  • 7 Day Return Policy. Customer responsible for all shipping charges.

User questions & answers

Question: Most peiiet bags are 40 lbs. how many times will a 40 lbs. bag fill the basket
Answer: I do 3 to 3.5 fill ups per bag, I have a thermometer on my stove, once it drops down to say just below 200 I refill, it catches and refires usually within the hour. It does require a bit more babysitting then the firewood but its much cleaner and simple to clean up with an ash vac.
Question: If I had a stainless steel basket with enough spacing, do you think it would do as a test
Answer: I'm not sure about your question either. I only used it one time and it was so bulky and hard to maneuver. I couldn't fill it with pellets without taking all afternoon. I ended up getting a stainless steel sheet (food grade) with air holes, 12"X24" that I'd lay flat over the ash pan and wood great. I needed to remain mindful for several reasons: 1. Pellets burn hotter than wood and they burn different so make sure you try small pellet fires at first until you get the hang of them. 2. EXPLOSIONS - This scared me a number of times. I could avoid explosions if I put pellets on the front side of the stove one time and the back side the next. If there was any size portion of pellets burning or red hot (with or without the flame) I learned to put the pellets next too and not on top. If I put 'new' pellets on hot ones they'd smolder and then there would be an explosion some of with were loud and dangerous. The basket looked great on paper and didn't work in my stove.
Question: do you lite the pellets on top or on the bottom
Answer: You can use gel fire starter by placing on top of pellets. We use a layer of pellets...3 pieces of FatWood in a teepee fashion...surrounded by more pellets. We don't like the gel.
Question: How often does it need to refilled
Answer: I would fill it every four hours or so. The main need was to keep the box cleaned out. Over all I was pleased with it.

Question: Do these come with storage bags
Answer: You're joking right. Seriously!
Question: Would this heat a tent

Question: Pictures appear to show item positioned 2 different ways, which way is correct
Answer: I USE MINE AS A HEATER, ON TOP OF MY TRANGEA BURNER IT GETS VERY HOT ON TOP. THE BLACK PART. IT WAS OVER 500 FH. I WAS USING ETHANOL AS FUEL. WWW.regalflame.com Its on amazon also.

Answer: It's just for one heater...don't waste your money. The product is no good.
Question: Will this base work with the powermatic pm1000 table saw? the owner's manual states the base of this saw is 24" x
Answer: It adjust up to 28 x 28. I have had no problem with mine. Have one on my band saw and one on my table saw. Super convenient with needing rearrange for space.
Question: Will this work with powermatic pm1000 table saw
Answer: Check the dimensions on your saw and see if they match up with the JMB base. I CAN tell you this, I've used this base on several different Powermatic tools and love them. The bases go together in five minutes without any tools and they're strong, stable and well made. They hold the tool in place beautifully and when you want to move the tool... it's effortless. Question: Do all 4 wheels lock
Answer: Yes. The back wheels locking hold the primary breaks. The front wheels, because they are swivel casters, locking not really holding the wheels not moving.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fan distribute the hot air from the ceiling? That is mainly what I need because I do not have a ceiling fan
Answer: No. This fan is made to sit on the woodstove/insert and blow hot air from the source into the room. It works amazingly for that! You should look at small fans made to hang from top of doorways. I don't know what they're called, but we have one in each doorway of the living room to distribute the hot air to the rest of the house. Wait, let me look (duh!)... "Minuteman Circulating Fans", about 5 x 5 x 2.5 inches. They work great; we use them year round!
Question: How tall is the little handle at the top of the medium sized fan, and does it slide down into the fan as it does on other similar fans on the market
Answer: height is a little over an inch . It doesn’t slide down, however it does fold over if clearance is an issue.
Question: Would this unit be recommended for a pot belly wood/coal burning stove w/ a 14" dia top
Answer: If the 14"top you've mentioned is a flat surface, then the answer would be yes. The footprint of the fan is less then 6" so that would be enough for this fan to sit on.
Question: Why is this fan $100 compared to some being
Answer: Made in Canada, not China, higher CFM (airflow), 125. Patent Protected. Higher quality parts and labor. Made and designed by the original manufacturers of Ecofans for 25 years.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a small Woodburning FP. It faces NW. Can I mount at exhaust vent to push hot air up chimney , to stop blow backs
Answer: My didn't come with a damper. That's something you'll probably have to add on your own. Although the company that makes the stove also sells dampers as accessories.
Question: where is it made
Answer: I don't see why not. But it's very heavy and should be covered when not in use. The cast iron will rust eventually if it gets wet.
Question: what is the max temp for the fan
Answer: no fire bricks, have to screw on legs and exhaust outlet. blocked bottom air inlet with aluminum foil, front air inlet is best, drilled some holes in ceramic board baffle at inside top of burn chamber for bettet exhaust flow to outlet.
Question: what temp do it start turning
Answer: It is a log wood stove not a pellet stove

User questions & answers

Question: How long do you have to wait, before you can use the stove again
Answer: if your existing rope is 3/8" , then it will work. There are several different size rope gaskets made, it should list the size for your stove in the owners manual.
Question: what is the width of the gasket
Answer: Hi- The thickness is whatever the package says it is. Usual thicjnesses ae 5/16", 3/8". 7/16", 1/2"...whatever the package says. The gasket may look toioi thick but it will compress depending on how you use it.
Question: I need the window gasket for the Lopi Answer wood heater
Answer: I don't know! What is the diameter of the current door glass? You have to replace it with the same size gasket. It should be in the manual that came with the stove??? You can also go online and google Lopi 380 door glass gasket and something should turn up. Good luck!
Question: What is the heat rating on the adhesive
Answer: Well Jenna, Hard to say, the difference between the Most gap & Least gap is the question. The gasket does compress some, so it will compress in the smaller area, but will it then be thick enough to seal the larger area? If you installed it & get a door imprint all the way around that would show success. They do make a 1/2 inch diameter which may make more difference in these clearances. Note up front: the glue is tricky to work with & hardens quickly, I suggest having some toss away pressing/placing type tools (like Chopsticks) before you start, to position, hold & sometimes stretch the rope keeping in mind: the most space will be removed when the rope is NOT stretched but pushed closer together on itself & least when the rope is stretched. Test: Take some clay or bubble gum and place a wad in the largest opening & the smallest opening, then check the difference, if the Difference is Less than 3/8 you should be ok, if it's more you may experience some leakage which may Not be a big problem keeping in mind that you must allow air to enter the stove to burn, you may negate the air leaking by with the closing of the air vents, however if there's too much air flow you may Not be able to control the fire, be careful there, to test this: after installing the gasket get a fire going well & with the air supply vents closed completely close the door and see if the fire dies down, if so you should be good if not you probably won't be able to control a larger fire.
