It is important to understand that the Wall of Fire grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Having the firewood in direct contact with the back wall of the fireplace will significantly increase the temperature of the firebrick and may cause brick and mortar fatigue over time. Answer:	Either is fine but you may want to take into consideration the average length of your firewood. Most firewood is about 18" to 20" in length. That being said, the 21" would be a better choice unless you cut your own firewood to shorter lengths.
Question:	Will this work with fireplace opening of
Answer:	If you're referring to the opening height of the fireplace, that would be a bit tight as the grate is 12" tall. We do offer a shortened version of the S-4 on our main site (not available on amazon.) That special grate is 10" tall instead; which would work better for your situation. Thanks for the inquiry.

Answer:	push the fire back plate up against the wall until the top hits. if there is a gap at the bottom that's fine

Answer:	I use it in an indoor wood burning fireplace, with an added metal plate behind it to reflect the heat. I don't see why you could not use it in an outdoor fireplace. It should give a lot more heat then a regular grate for you. I have had this for about three years. It was well worth the money for the improvement in heat coming out of my fireplace. It actually saved me money using it instead of my furnace.
