12 best wood burning stoves
Wood-burning stoves are heating appliances that use wood as fuel to produce heat for warming a space. They are a popular choice for heating homes and are known for their efficiency and cozy ambiance. Here's some information about wood-burning stoves and related accessories:
Types of Wood-Burning Stoves:
- Traditional Stoves: These stoves are made from cast iron or steel and have a classic appearance. They often have decorative details and are known for their durability.
- Modern Stoves: Modern wood-burning stoves feature sleek designs and are often made from steel or other contemporary materials. They focus on efficiency and may include features like glass doors for viewing the flames.
How Wood-Burning Stoves Work: Wood stoves work by burning wood logs inside a combustion chamber. Air is supplied to the fire through vents, allowing for controlled and efficient burning. Heat is radiated into the room through the stove's body and often through a stovepipe or chimney.
Efficiency: Wood stoves are known for their high efficiency in converting wood fuel into heat. They can provide a significant amount of warmth for a room or even an entire home, depending on their size and design.
Installation: Proper installation of a wood-burning stove is crucial for safety and efficiency. This includes ensuring adequate clearance from combustible materials, proper venting through a chimney or flue, and compliance with local building codes.
Accessories for Wood-Burning Stoves:
- Log Carriers and Holders: These are accessories designed to carry and store firewood. They come in various styles, including baskets, totes, and racks.
- Stove Fireplace Accessories: This category includes tools like pokers, tongs, shovels, and brushes used for tending to the fire, cleaning the stove, and adjusting logs.
- Parts and Accessories: Wood stove parts and accessories may include replacement gaskets, firebricks, and stovepipe connectors. These are essential for maintenance and repairs.
- Heating Cooling Air Quality: Wood stoves can affect indoor air quality, and some accessories like air purifiers or humidifiers may be used to enhance comfort and air quality in the home.
- Home Kitchen: Wood stoves are sometimes used for cooking and heating water, making them relevant to the kitchen.
Safety: Proper safety precautions are critical when using wood-burning stoves. This includes ensuring the stove is placed on a non-combustible surface, using a spark screen or glass door to prevent sparks and embers from escaping, and regular chimney maintenance to prevent creosote buildup.
Environmental Considerations: While wood is a renewable fuel source, the environmental impact of burning wood depends on factors like the type of wood, stove efficiency, and emission controls. Some modern stoves are designed to minimize emissions and maximize fuel efficiency.
Wood-burning stoves can be an excellent heating option, providing warmth, ambiance, and potentially saving on energy costs. However, they require proper installation, maintenance, and responsible wood sourcing to ensure safe and efficient operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | What size is the flue pipe and can I get elbows for it |
Answer: | The description says 2 3/4" |
Question: | would i be able to use this lightly in a colemen 14x10 feet tent |
Answer: | No, yes you will have to burn off the cheap paint first before you ever use this on a camping trip. Then paint it with the high temperature paint for barbecue grills. You can get from Lowes or Home Depot. But back to the tent itself, the material itself is only fire resistant and could start to melt or catch fire especially if it has been sprayed with a water proofing spray. And I would guess this tent doesn't have a stove jack in the roof either. |
Question: | Alaska is part of the United states. Why when I try to order does it say no international shipping |
Answer: | Unless you are paying Air Mail, it's going over the Canadian Border, which is an international border. |
Question: | I cant ship to canada why is that |
Answer: | Princess Auto has the same stove for less roomies and ships to Canada |

Product description
The Ashley Hearth Products AW1120E-P is a beautiful air tight plate steel wood burning stove with nickel-pewter trim that accents a charcoal black finish. A heavy cast iron door with air washed ceramic glass allows a magnificent view of the burning fire that will enhance any hearth setting. The AW1120E-P wood stove meets the stringent requirements of the EPA "Step 2" 2020 Certification Guidelines. This wood stove has 68,000 BTUs that can heat up to 1,200 square feet. The Ashley AW1120E-P burns logs up to 18 inches in length while the pedestal base provides an elegant touch to any room. Here's how it works: the primary air inlet at the front of the stove ignites the wood upon start up. Once burning, the secondary air inlet at the rear of the firebox feeds air to the top of the stove through three ignition tubes directly above the wood. The result is that you have ignition, or fire, at the bottom and at the top of the wood stove which, in effect, consumes the wood. This is a very efficient method of getting the most energy possible out of the wood that you are burning. The AW1120E-P model replaces the previous Vogelzang models TR001, TR001B, TR001WS and APS1100 wood stoves.
- 68,000 BTUs heats up to 1,200 Sq. Ft.
- Firebrick lined for long life and combustion efficiency while large ash pan with brushed nickel handle makes cleanup easy
- Accepts logs up to 18" in length
- Brushed nickel spring door handle and pedestal base provides an elegant look to any room
- Blower sold separately (model CB36 or B36)

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I remove the residual plastic left behind in between the metal folds and under the rivets by firing the stove |
Answer: | I would advise against it. Manually and tediously remove the film prior to firing up...unless you enjoy seeing the gunk marring the bright, polished finish... |
Question: | Can this be used safely in a large tent (4 person) with good ventilation |
Answer: | Definitely not! ! Even if you have a chimney approved vented tent and some kind of devised smoke chamber and chimney, this would not be air tight enough. You cannot adequately control combustion air (fresh air) or combustion gases (volatile combustion gases and smoke). Don't even try it in a tent vestibule. |
Question: | Can i use charcoal in this or just wood |
Answer: | Yes, charcoal is a great fuel for it. |
Question: | Is there a connector needed to use gas or butane for fuel |

User questions & answers
Question: | whats the difference between the versa&duo |
Answer: | The Versa can use both charcoal and or wood. The Duo is wood only. I bought two Versa stoves this summer. I absolutely love them. Charcoal burning is a great ability so I recommend the Versa. If you are thinking about buying one, I wouldn’t hesitate to endorse The Versa. These stoves are awesome for so many reasons. |
Question: | Would a Sterno fuel can work on pccasion |
Answer: | Yes and so will the Trangia alcohol burner. Realize though the up draft will get very vigorous. I strongly suggest you find a tin can to place in the throat of your rocket stove, to elevate your burners, to prevent the rapid consumption of the fuel, Sterno or alcohol and prevent it blazing like a blowtorch. It will believe me. Point is, find that sweet spot for the flame under your pot or skillet. Added bonus, your fuel last longer. To give enough air for your fuel, pick a can to set your sterno or trangia, that is small enough to allow the draft to still work. Or if you like, weld up a little platform to fit in the throat of your rocket stove. Have fun. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the pot skirt? Also does anyone have any suggestions for pot or kettle to use in conjunction with the skirt |
Answer: | The pot skirt is adjustable from approximately 7 inches to 12 inches in diameter. It has (5) evenly spaced 3/8 inch tabs on the inside of the ring that I assume are meant to increase the surface area of contact and make it more secure. I wasn't sure how to use the pot skirt until you raised the question. According to the EcoZoom website you attatch the pot skirt directly to the pot/pan you are cooking with. I thought it was a wind gaurd and supposed to wrap around the rocket stove itself. I learned something new today. Thanks |
Question: | How do you clean the inside |
Answer: | Hi Bryan,Thank you for your question. The internal combustion chamber (or liner) itself stays pretty clean from the hot flame. The stove is designed for good combustion so there is not typically a lot of ash build up. This will vary depending on the wood used and if there is any bark, etc. Once finished cooking on the stove I typically just pick the stove up by the handles and dump the ash out of the door at the front of the stove. Sometimes a little tapping on the back of the stove is helpful too. Hope that is helpful. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. |

STOVE TOP SURFACE THERMOMETER
Installation Instructions:
• This thermometer is calibrated to be used on the outside surface of a metal wood stove.
• Attach to the stove using the magnet on the back side of the thermometer.
• Place thermometer on the top, front, or side surface of the stove.
• Generally you will want to place the thermometer in the location recommended by the stove manufacturer, or the location the stove reaches the hottest temperature.
• Magnet will hold to steel up to 800°F.
Operating Instructions:
• The best operating temperature for most wood stoves is between 400°F and 650°F and is illustrated as the middle zone on your thermometer labelled “BEST ZONE”.
• Temperatures below 400°F can create a dirty, smoky fire that leads to creosote buildup in your chimney. Creosote can be a safety hazard. This temperature range is illustrated on your thermometer and labelled “CREOSOTE”.
• A temperature above 650°F consumes more wood without additional room heat as more energy is lost up the stove pipe. This area is illustrated on your thermometer as “TOO HOT”.
- FOR STOVE TOP SURFACE - Calibrated to read temperature on the surface of your wood stove.
- MAGNETIC ATTACHMENT - Easily attach to your metal wood stove. Magnet will hold to 800°F.
- EASY TO READ ZONES - Optimize efficiency, prevent overheating, minimize creosote.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is size |
Answer: | 2-1/2 inches in diameter |
Question: | Will this work for a Jotel 500 wood stove |
Answer: | The short answer is yes as I have one sitting on on top of my Jotel woodstove. Having said that, it should only be used as a rough (very rough) guideline and not as a precise scientific instrument. Reasons being: - different wood burns at different temperature and produce different amount/level of BTU - different wood has different level of pitch and should be monitored differently - different location on the stove top can have greatly different temperature depending where the burning log is placed - different stove have different chracteristics in heat discipation There is no substitute for observing how your woodstove operates in conjunction with creosote collected on your chimney stack. It's usefulness is its ability to give you a baseline (as far as temperature goes) for future observation and reference in order to find out how to operate your stove in the optimum wy. |
Question: | Why is best zone 400f-650f, when most other termometers out there are 300f-600f |
Answer: | The best burn temps are a best guess and depend more on the stove manufacturers specific recommendations. However this particular thermometer is flawed. The indicator needle drags and sticks, leading to inaccurate readings. |
Question: | Will this work on a stove with a ceramic top |
Answer: | i don't see why not. It just measures the surface temperature of the object you put it on. |

Answer: | I haven't tried adding it to bath water, but I don't see why it would be an issue. Its very nice applied directly to the skin as well. |
Question: | Does this kit come with a damper for the stove pipe |
Answer: | I am a staffer at EO Products. We have not tested the product for this purpose and do not claim that will work to repel insects, however, the lavender essential oil MAY help. It would be worth a try. Or, try this recipe for a DIY bug spray: 2oz Witch Hazel, 2oz Distilled Water, 15 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil, 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil, 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil, 1/2 teaspoon Vegetable Glycerin (optional to moisturize skin). Mix Witch Hazel, Vegetable Glycerin and Essential Oils in a bowl and whisk. Add water and whisk until well blended. Pour into a spray bottle. Shake before using. View this recipe and more DIYs on our blog: https://blog.eoproducts.com/diy-insect-repellent-with-essential-oils/ Enjoy!XO, EO |
Question: | says for use with 36 or 55 gallon barrel.. will my 30 gal be to small then |
Answer: | I put my oil in a spray bottle and spray five squirts across the top of my back before turning off the water. Then I let the shower water hit it lightly so it runs down. I've also put it in a hairdresser's squeeze bottle and run it across the back of my shoulders. |
Question: | What is the door opening dimensions |
