14 best fire grates
Fire grates are essential components of fireplaces and stoves, designed to support the wood or other fuel source and allow for efficient burning and airflow. They play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and effective fire. Here's what you need to know about fire grates:
Purpose:
- Fire grates elevate the firewood or fuel off the ground or hearth floor, allowing air to circulate underneath.
- By lifting the fuel, they enable better oxygen flow, which is vital for combustion and a more efficient, hotter fire.
- Fire grates help to prevent fuel from smothering the fire and ensure that ash and debris fall away from the burning logs, creating a cleaner and longer-lasting fire.
Materials:
- Fire grates are typically constructed from durable materials that can withstand high temperatures, such as cast iron, steel, or stainless steel.
- Cast iron grates are known for their durability and heat-retaining properties, while steel grates are often more affordable.
Types of Fire Grates:
- Flat Grates: These are simple, flat platforms with raised edges to hold the fuel in place. They are commonly used in open fireplaces.
- Ember Grates: Ember grates have smaller gaps or bars, which are ideal for holding small pieces of coal or ember, often used in coal-burning stoves.
- Log Grates: Log grates have thicker bars or logs that support larger pieces of firewood, making them suitable for wood-burning stoves and fireplaces.
Sizing and Fit:
- The size of the fire grate should match the dimensions of your fireplace or stove to ensure proper airflow and combustion.
- It's important to measure the width, depth, and height of your firebox to select the right-sized grate.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance, such as cleaning ash and debris from the grate and inspecting it for signs of wear or damage, is important for safety and longevity.
- Over time, fire grates may experience wear and tear due to exposure to high heat. Check for cracks or warping, and replace as needed.
Safety:
- Properly using a fire grate can enhance the safety of your fireplace or stove by preventing embers and debris from falling onto the hearth or floor.
- Always follow safety guidelines for using fireplaces and stoves, including keeping a safe distance from combustible materials.
Fire grates are essential tools for maintaining a safe and efficient fire in your fireplace or stove. Choosing the right type and size of grate and properly maintaining it can enhance the performance of your heating appliance and contribute to a warm and cozy atmosphere in your home.

User questions & answers
Question: | I used this grate one time and majority of the black coating peeled off. Is this normal? It seems like this thing is going to rust in no time at all |
Answer: | Robert has the same setup I do. Build-in timers on a heater actually limit its usefulness unless you can bypass the timer when suitable. I have a heater with a build-in timer (my first-ever heater) and I no longer use it except in very limited situations. This heater is fantastic as its thermostat is very useful and easy. This system is in my greenhouse as a back-up if my other system fails and the temps drop below 40F. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the middle section that is flat |
Answer: | Turn the dial on the top of it. Usually once the room is warm enough I turn it back until it shuts off. |

Our patented vertical grates solve smoke problems and dramatically increase heat output in troublesome wood burning fireplaces. These high efficiency grates allow a magnificent wall of warmth producing fireplace embers to develop at the base of the grate, while firewood burns slow and controlled above. The vertical design initiates a self-feeding fire which promotes a much hotter and cleaner burn. Located at the extreme rear of the fireplace, our grates force smoke to hug the rear wall of the fire box, eliminating smoke from spilling into the home.
Grate Wall of Fire manufactures many sizes of these vertical grates to fit just about any fireplace out there.
M-5 fireplace grate dimensions:
21" wide, 14" deep, 15" tall. Constructed of 3/4" solid steel bar.
Fireplace size requirements for the M-5 grate:
The rear wall of the fireplace must be a minimum of 21" wide, the fireplace floor must be a minimum of 16" deep, and the height of the fireplace front opening should be a minimum of 25" to allow adequate clearance to easily load firewood onto the grate.
Fireplace construction requirements for the M-5 grate:
It is important to understand that the Wall of Fire grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Having the firewood in direct contact with the back wall of the fireplace will significantly increase the temperature of the firebrick and may cause brick and mortar fatigue over time. Because of this we highly recommend you also purchase our model RF-5 reflective fireback (sold separately by Grate Wall of Fire) to shield the back wall of the fireplace from excessive heat. If you are planning to use a Wall of Fire grate in any type of factory built fireplace such as a pre-fab, zero clearance, or metal fireplace, the addition of a reflective fireback is absolutely mandatory.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the ornaments be attached securely |
Answer: | The very front is 13 1/2”. This is for the 18” grate. I don’t know about 21” grate but I assume it would be approx 5” smaller. |
Question: | can this grate be used with a gas starter |
Answer: | Yes, this grate can be used in a natural gas fireplace. |
Question: | Can I use this with the doors to my fireplace closed to reduce furnace heat going up the chimney |
Answer: | For your fireplace the 27 inch grate should be a great fit. |
Question: | Can you use Duraflame logs in this grate? Also looks like you need to have pretty small pieces of wood |
Answer: | Good question. Yes, the middle legs are meant to be shorter than the outer legs. The center legs are there to keep the grate from sagging in the middle over time. If they were longer than the outer legs, the grate would rock from side to side. However, if they are sightly short they still serve their purpose: as soon as the grate starts to sag they will touch the ground and stop the process. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this product made - in china or in the usa or in another country |
Answer: | yes, it can be used with a gas starter |
Question: | can you cook hamburgers directly on this grill |
Answer: | Generally speaking, you should not burn hot fires with the fireplace doors shut. If you do, you may overheat and crack the glass. The doors are intended to be shut once the fire has simmered down for the evening to prevent heat from escaping up the chimney after the fire is out. |
Question: | Our pit is 31 ins would it fit it or will it fall inside of it |
Answer: | Yes. I use a duraflame log on the bottom to start my wood on fire. This way I don't have to hassle with kindling. The manufacturer recommends you don't use logs wider than the grate, or at least not by very much. |

User questions & answers
Question: | On the 27" model, what is the width in the back? My fire place is narrower in the back |
Answer: | I'm not sure. I don't use less wood with this grate that standard grate I had before, I use more. The reason is I have more and bigger fires than with my previous grate. I do not heat my house with my fireplace. I have a large fireplace in my 2 story great room and I love to have a roaring fire going when its cold outside. I am not trying to save wood or burn less wood. I want a big hot fire and don't care how much wood I use. This grate allows me to have a bigger, hotter fire than a standard grate and because the grate essentially tilts the plane of the fire itself from horizontal to almost perpendicular to the floor of the fireplace a lot more heat and light radiate into the room. If your main goal is more efficiency you should forget about a typical decorative fireplace that this grate is designed for and look into a wood burning stove or a fireplace insert designed for room heating. |
Question: | How far is the back middle leg from the back of the fireplace wall |
Answer: | You can find videos on YouTube where people used thermometers to show how much more heat they get, I did not do this, I do have to move an ottoman that I usually keep a few feet from the hearth due to the radiant heat, mostly worried that the heat will damage the leather. All that said, the key to getting all that radiant heat is a hot bed of coals which takes at least an hour to achieve, and having a fireback. I use a piece of cast iron baseboard radiator, 2 foot wide by about 10 inches in height. I found it. So with that combination I get a lot more heat from my fireplace. But keep in mind radiant heat will only heat one room, you will not be able to heat your whole house unless it is just one room. This is my second season using this grate, it was my cheap alternative to getting an insert. But don't forget to get a fireback! Doesn't have to be pretty just something like a piece of plate steel or a scrap piece of cast iron baseboard radiator. Good luck. |
Question: | Do the front and back match in shape for double sided fireplaces |
Answer: | It should work. You can call the manufacturer & verify. |
Question: | It’s not clear what the dimensions 15x14x7.5 represent. Is that the overall size of Width, depth and height |
Answer: | No, I didn't need it. I don't normally say something like this but, you'll love this thing, especially if you have a smoke backup problem, it immediately eliminates it! If there IS a downside, it's that it burns more wood sooner than the traditional grate. |

- 28"L x 28"W x 7.33" H

User questions & answers
Question: | From which country is this manufactured |
Answer: | This grate is tapered from front to back to fit fireplaces that are also tapered, like yours. The width of the back leg is 24 inches. The width at the tips of the ribs in the back is about 22 inches. |
Question: | To clarify the width question... Is it 28" total from edge to edge, actually meaning the rods are longer than 28" after the upward bend at the ends |
Answer: | It can go within about 4 or 5 inches if the grate is touching the wall |
Question: | Wow, is this really 733" high |
Answer: | As the description mentions, it is a tapered design. It is wider in the front and narrower in the back to fit most fireplaces that are also shaped like that. It is not obvious from the front-on view as one can't easily tell how much or if, at all, it is smaller in the back or not - one might think one is just seeing some perspective effects. For instance, my 18" wide grate has the tines at 17.5" width in front and only 13.5" width at the back. I do think it would still look fairly nice even with the double sided fireplace, but certainly understand why you might want one that was rectangular for your application. |
Question: | I’m thinking about getting an ash pan for underneath. How far apart are the bottom legs |
Answer: | 15 inches wide (in the front), 14 inches deep, and 7.5 inches high from bottom of legs to top of log supports |
- RUSTIC ANTIQUE FINISH: A tempered steel frame with an antique finish and a worn texture add a rustic touch of class to your fireplace

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the height of the lowest part of the side panel |
