Answer:	Mine does. It appears that each one is hand made and varies to their base construction. Yours should be free standing in my opinion. We do rest ours resting on the fireplace but when we move it, it stands on its own.

Question:	How hot does it get when the fire is on? I am trying to keep the toddler from reaching the fire but if this gets super hot, it may not do me any good
Answer:	It is metal and as such will get hot. I have moved it back and forth with a fire going and not been burned. The screen sections dissipate heat quickly but honestly I would recommend a baby gate that bends to close off the area. We bought a separate “cage” type gate that disconnects from itself and hinges to bend to shape around the fireplace area. We use this screen to keep our child from playing with the fireplace when not in use. My child has tried to hit it and bang on it without it tipping over.
