13 best wood stove inserts

Wood stove inserts are heating appliances designed to be installed within existing fireplaces, enhancing their efficiency and converting them into efficient wood-burning or pellet-burning stoves. These inserts are related to fireplace fans, stove fireplace accessories, heating and cooling equipment, and home kitchen appliances. Here's what you need to know about wood stove inserts:

  1. Purpose and Benefits:

    • Wood stove inserts serve to improve the heating performance of traditional fireplaces. They transform open, inefficient fireplaces into efficient and environmentally friendly heating sources.
  2. Installation:

    • Installation typically involves fitting the wood stove insert into the fireplace opening and connecting it to the existing chimney or flue system. Proper installation is crucial for safety and efficiency.
  3. Efficiency:

    • Wood stove inserts are highly efficient at heating spaces because they are designed to burn wood or pellets more efficiently than traditional open fireplaces. They radiate heat into the room and often have fans to distribute warm air.
  4. Emission Control:

    • Many modern wood stove inserts are EPA-certified, meaning they meet strict emissions standards, resulting in cleaner and more environmentally friendly burning.
  5. Heating Capacity:

    • Wood stove inserts come in various sizes and heating capacities, allowing homeowners to choose one that suits the size of the room or living space they want to heat.
  6. Fuel Types:

    • Wood stove inserts primarily burn wood, but some models can also burn pellets or other biomass fuels, offering versatility in fuel options.
  7. Air Circulation:

    • Fireplace fans and blowers are often used in conjunction with wood stove inserts. These fans help distribute warm air throughout the room more effectively, improving overall heating efficiency.
  8. Safety Features:

    • Many wood stove inserts come with safety features such as glass doors with temperature control, spark screens, and automatic shut-off mechanisms to ensure safe operation.
  9. Aesthetic Options:

    • Wood stove inserts come in various designs and finishes to complement different interior styles. Homeowners can choose from a range of decorative options to enhance the appearance of their fireplace.
  10. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance is essential to keep wood stove inserts operating efficiently. This includes cleaning the chimney, removing ash, and inspecting gaskets and seals for wear and tear.
  11. Home Kitchen and Cooking:

    • Wood stove inserts are primarily designed for heating and not for cooking. However, some models may feature a cooktop surface where you can heat small pots or pans.
  12. Cost Considerations:

    • The cost of a wood stove insert varies depending on the model, size, features, and installation requirements. Homeowners should factor in both the upfront cost and long-term savings on heating bills.

In summary, wood stove inserts are heating appliances that can transform traditional, inefficient fireplaces into efficient and environmentally friendly heating sources. They offer improved heating efficiency, emission control, and various design options to suit the needs and preferences of homeowners.Fireplace fans and accessories can further enhance their performance and comfort. User questions & answers

Question: Hiw do I attach top plate to 8x8 terra cotta that protrudes from the chimney
Answer: You don’t need a damper, it’s built in to the stove
Question: I would like to put a damper in the pipe do you sell one that will work for this
Answer: Hello, This is only to be used inside a masonry chimney to reline the chimney. If you need to extend your chimney through an attic and above the roof, you would need to use Class A chimney pipe (which we do offer). Class A chimney pipe has a 2" clearance to combustibles. Rockford Chimney Supply
Question: Can this be used from the attic to the roof instead stove pipe
Answer: Insulating is always recommended as it reduces the amount of creosote buildup in the flue and keeps the flue gases hot. It is not required by code if you have a brick and masonry chimney with clay flue tiles.
Question: do you need to insulate
Answer: Same as the old one.

Product features

Use Inside or Out

Whether you want to spruce up your outdoor fire pit or your indoor fireplace, these are the logs for you.

Our ceramic fiber logs are versatile. They go great in an old school fire pit, a modern fire table with lava rock or glass, or an indoor gas fireplace.

Before switching anything - Gas logs included - with any indoor fireplace, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK WITH A LOCAL EXPERT. There are 100's, if not 1000's of variations of fireplaces and fire codes across the USA and it is very important that you proceed with caution when it comes to lighting a fire in your home.

Individual Logs Give You Individual Freedom

Arrange your logs based on your needs. You receive 10 logs with 5 different designs to allow you to use your creativity. Stack the logs in an orderly fashion or mimic nature by placing them at random.

Be sure to leave at least 1.5 inches between the logs and your gas orafices. Blocking these orafices is what causes incomplete gas combustion which can lead to odors, carbon buildup (Which then becomes soot), or other damage.

Also, be sure that your fireplace is clean before using because any unburned organic material will also combust and create particles.

User questions & answers

Question: how do i find the 2* bafflel board for a ashley
Answer: it is between burn pit and ash tray ok that it john
Question: The images shown don't have the ussc symbol on the unit. please confirm that this is a united states stove company product and not a replica
Answer: Mine has a USSC symbol. It is a large metal piece at the base of the stove. Kind of difficult to distinguish but it is there.
Question: Is it possible to use this stove with an existing 8” class A chimney? Or do I need to get an insert to drop the size down to
Answer: This is only meant to be used with 3-4 inch pellet pipe or with 6 inch Class A stove pipe.
Question: Could this be bricked in to retain more heat
Answer: I actually dud put fire bricks on the unit to try to retain heat, the result was, this unit, unlike a rocket stove; is trimmed down a bit to heat up ro about 800-900 degrees at the most and my feeling was that the fire bricks. While effective, also seemed to kind of rob the stove of it's heat at the same time, and since the unit runs on the draft it creates with it's own heat, it tended to mess with the draft a little bit. However, I did not use soapstone, which I'm feeling would be the perfect add-on to one of these stove.

User questions & answers

Question: How "flat" or compressed will this rope get if used between a rock fireplace and fireplace glass door unit (on metal)? Part to close gap / seal air fl
Answer: I can only guess yes. Reasoning; fireplace manufacturers are not electronic circuit designers. They are basically metal fabricators who choose industry designed off the shelf controllers, and valve assemblies. Call a local dealer and do some research
Question: will this work on my englander pellet stove model 55 – shp
Answer: No. you need the signature command module for that unit. 80D0018 is on Amazon.
Question: My old door gasket is 7/8. Can I use a 1 inch size of gasket instead
Answer: The service parts guide shows this is the module for that unit. 582-833 is an orifice one line down from the module.
Question: Which 5/16" gasket to use on a jotul door -- the armored rope version or the rope version
Answer: I don't recognize that part number. There should be a tag on your old control module with lots of info. On that should be the part number: PN: 2166-307 was the module I had, and this one (2166-347) is its latest replacement. Works for me (old one was fried in a power surge).

Product description

STOVE TOP SURFACE THERMOMETER

Installation Instructions:

• This thermometer is calibrated to be used on the outside surface of a metal wood stove.

• Attach to the stove using the magnet on the back side of the thermometer.

• Place thermometer on the top, front, or side surface of the stove.

• Generally you will want to place the thermometer in the location recommended by the stove manufacturer, or the location the stove reaches the hottest temperature.

• Magnet will hold to steel up to 800°F.

Operating Instructions:

• The best operating temperature for most wood stoves is between 400°F and 650°F and is illustrated as the middle zone on your thermometer labelled “BEST ZONE”.

• Temperatures below 400°F can create a dirty, smoky fire that leads to creosote buildup in your chimney. Creosote can be a safety hazard. This temperature range is illustrated on your thermometer and labelled “CREOSOTE”.

• A temperature above 650°F consumes more wood without additional room heat as more energy is lost up the stove pipe. This area is illustrated on your thermometer as “TOO HOT”.

User questions & answers

Question: What is size
Answer: 2-1/2 inches in diameter
Question: Will this work for a Jotel 500 wood stove
Answer: The short answer is yes as I have one sitting on on top of my Jotel woodstove. Having said that, it should only be used as a rough (very rough) guideline and not as a precise scientific instrument. Reasons being: - different wood burns at different temperature and produce different amount/level of BTU - different wood has different level of pitch and should be monitored differently - different location on the stove top can have greatly different temperature depending where the burning log is placed - different stove have different chracteristics in heat discipation There is no substitute for observing how your woodstove operates in conjunction with creosote collected on your chimney stack. It's usefulness is its ability to give you a baseline (as far as temperature goes) for future observation and reference in order to find out how to operate your stove in the optimum wy.
Question: Why is best zone 400f-650f, when most other termometers out there are 300f-600f
Answer: The best burn temps are a best guess and depend more on the stove manufacturers specific recommendations. However this particular thermometer is flawed. The indicator needle drags and sticks, leading to inaccurate readings.
Question: Will this work on a stove with a ceramic top
Answer: i don't see why not. It just measures the surface temperature of the object you put it on.

User questions & answers

Question: are these pumice
Answer: Used these in a standard wood stove, run at the usual temperatures with a hot burn daily to burn the creosote out of the stovepipe, for about a year. They've held up well. They arrived packaged well in bubble wrap, all bricks intact. For the couple odd sizes needed for the floor pattern, they cut easily with a diamond blade on a circular saw. A carbide hacksaw blade would likely work as well for a brick or two. Laid out result was a nice tight fit. Should work nicely for any wood fired stove application in the firebox, size and thickness of course taken into consideration. If it's in the oven cooking space, can't answer, as the materials and what might go airborne and into the food would be at issue. It seems that would be strictly a manufacturer question.
Question: Would these work well in a wood fired pizza oven as the floor
Answer: Yes. The bricks can easily handle the inside of a fire place which reaches temp above 800 degrees. Placing them along the inside walls of a grill would prob hold the heat in better.
Question: Can this be used in a Grill to hold heat? A grill where food is cooked
Answer: I used them in a propane forge and they melted in under an hour The maximum temperature of a forge is supposed to be 2400 F.
Question: are these temp rated at upto
Answer: Hello, Thank you for your question. You can silicone the top plate to the top of the clay tile. It will overhang or you can trim it if you would like to.

How Does the Stove Fan Work?

The stove fan works by using the heat from your wood stove to drive the stove fan blades making for a simple and elegant solution to your issues with heating. The stove fan makes use of a Thermoelectric Power Generator.

The heat is moved from a hot area to the cold metal fan blades resulting in an electric current. This energy that is produced powers a rotary motor that spin the blades to move air. The stove fan is very reliable and has no need for any other source of energy.

The base of the stove fan heats up, there’s a motor here, which is powered by the heat that’s created from your stove. So the fan sits directly on the top of the stove and as soon as it hits a certain temperature, the motor starts working, the stove fan will spin faster when it’s hotter.

Which type of stove does the stove fan work with?

No matter which stove you have: gas, electric, pellet stove or wood burning stove, catalytic and non-catalytic, stove fans will work well.

Answer: More like cim, cubic inch per minute.
Question: will this work if I put it on the hearth of my fireplace. note it is not a wood burning stove

Question: Will this work in my ash catcher to circulate debris
Answer: Probably not.
Question: Could this be used on top of a dyna-glo kerosene heater
