10 best humidifier installations
Humidifier installations are the processes and considerations involved in setting up and integrating humidifiers into a home's heating, cooling, and air quality systems. Humidifiers are devices that add moisture to the indoor air to maintain an optimal humidity level, which can have several benefits for health and comfort. Here are some key points about humidifier installations:
Types of Humidifiers: There are different types of humidifiers, including:
Central Humidifiers: These are integrated into the home's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system. They distribute moisture through the ductwork and can provide whole-house humidity control.
Portable Humidifiers: These are standalone units that can be placed in specific rooms. They are typically smaller and less complex than central humidifiers.
Benefits of Humidifiers: Humidifiers help maintain an optimal indoor humidity level, which can have several advantages:
Improved Comfort: Proper humidity levels can make indoor spaces feel more comfortable, especially during dry, winter months.
Health Benefits: Adequate humidity can alleviate dry skin, reduce respiratory discomfort, and decrease the likelihood of illnesses like colds and flu.
Preservation: Maintaining the right humidity levels can help protect wooden furniture, floors, and instruments from drying out or cracking.
Professional Installation: Installing a central humidifier typically requires professional HVAC technicians. They will assess the home's heating and cooling system to determine the best location for the humidifier unit and ensure it is properly integrated into the existing ductwork.
Sizing: The size of the humidifier is crucial for effective operation. HVAC professionals calculate the required capacity based on factors such as the home's square footage, insulation, and heating system output.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential for the efficient and safe operation of humidifiers. This may involve changing or cleaning filters, cleaning the water reservoir, and monitoring humidity levels.
Water Source: Humidifiers require a water source. Central humidifiers are often connected directly to the home's water supply, while portable units have water tanks that need refilling.
Humidistat Control: Many humidifiers, especially central ones, are equipped with humidistats, which are devices that monitor humidity levels and adjust the humidifier's operation accordingly.
Safety Considerations: Proper installation ensures that humidifiers do not cause any damage to the HVAC system or create mold or mildew issues due to excess moisture.Adequate ventilation and drainage are essential.
Energy Efficiency: Some modern central humidifiers are designed to be energy-efficient and can help save on heating costs by providing a more comfortable environment at lower temperatures.
Placement: The location of the humidifier unit or portable humidifiers should be carefully considered to ensure even distribution of moisture throughout the home.
In summary, humidifier installations involve the integration of devices that add moisture to indoor air, improving comfort and potentially providing health benefits. Central humidifiers require professional installation, sizing considerations, and regular maintenance, while portable units offer more flexibility but require manual filling and placement decisions. Proper installation and maintenance are essential for efficient and safe operation.

Product description
Aprilaire introduced the first evaporative humidifier for forced air furnace systems back in 1954. Since that time, Aprilaire continues to lead the industry in whole home humidification systems – including steam humidifiers. Aprilaire steam humidifiers use electrode technology and are simple to install, operate, and maintain. With electrode technology, electrical current flows between submerged electrodes, resistance of the water to the electric current heats the water. The submerged electrodes are found in a replaceable canister. At the end of a humidifier season, the canister – including the electrodes, is replaced. No cleaning, no scrubbing, simply replace the canister and you’re ready for the next humidifier season. Electrode technology requires impurities in the water to promote the transfer of electricity. For this reason, water filtration is not required with electrode technology, minimizing the complexity of the installation and on-going operating costs. This unit will operate with water hardness between 3 and 36 grains – a very wide range. If reverse osmosis or deionized water is present, plumb the steam humidifier to a water line before the water flows through the reverse osmosis or deionization equipment.
INCLUDED IN THE BOX: Installation instructions, steam humidifier, Model 62 automatic digital humidifier control with sensor, outdoor temperature sensor, dispersion tube, steam hose (6 feet), 7/8 inch drain tubing (10 feet), hose clamps, saddle valve, mounting screws, Model 80 steam canister

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this kit have the ferrules and fittings for the fridge side? It seems not many kits do |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | What is the rated PSI of the tubing |
Answer: | There are adapters that can reduce the fitting size to accommodated the installation kit. You should be able to connect the kit anywhere you can install the adapter after the shut off valve. |
Question: | Is this lead free |
Answer: | The smallest size you will easily be able to find is probably 1/2" tube strap. Best practice is to use similar materials together which for this application would be plastic. The tube will lay on the straps without being pinched. |
Question: | I need 50 feet, anyone |
Answer: | The tee is made with lead-free brass. This item is NSF 61 certified, which is required by plumbing codes & standards. This product is safe to use for potable water! The reason for the Prop 65 warning is California. Most all manufacturers that sell their products in California use the warning on mostly all of their products. Thanks for your inquiry! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Mine says "Canada" |
Question: | does the price 630 includes all the price of accessories |
Answer: | Yes everything is included . except 15 amp circuit breaker. 14 ga. Wire. for electric connection . 18 ga. thermostat wire for humidistat (which is included ). If you are mounting the unit farther away than 5' from return duct you will need longer steam hose available through honeywell in 15' piece. |
Question: | Does the unit require 220Vac for the most efficiency or does 110Vac provide the best efficiency |
Answer: | There is a jumper in the unit that allows for either 110 or 220. It's easy to switch. Certainly the unit delivers more steam with 220, but with 110 the unit is way more efficient than the old TruSteam units. I rum my units on 110 and they work very well. |
Question: | What should the normal level of water be in the canister |
Answer: | mine the level varies depending where in the on cycle it is |
Product description
Aprilaire introduced the first evaporative humidifier for forced air furnace systems back in 1954. Since that time, Aprilaire continues to lead the industry in whole home humidification systems. Our evaporative humidifiers work by piping water into the distribution tray located at the top of the humidifier. The water is uniformly distributed across the width of the tray and through a scientifically designed system of outlets. It flows by gravity over the Water Panel evaporator. Dry, hot air from the HVAC system is moved through the moisture-laden Water Panel evaporator. Natural evaporation takes place, the water is turned to vapor, and the humidified air is circulated throughout the home.
INCLUDED IN THE BOX: Installation instructions and template, humidifier with built-in fan, 24 VAC transformer, manual humidifier control with sensor, saddle valve, solenoid valve, and Model # 35 Water Panel

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with every thing need for a typical installation |
Answer: | No. You'll need 1/4" copper tubing, 6" duct tubing to go from supply side of humidifier to the return air duct, a suitable 6" circular duct to fasten to the hole you'll make in the return air duct, bell wire to run from controller to voltage reduction transformer. Do yourself a favor and get a roll of foil tape for taping up seams and leaks. |
Question: | I have a 2600 sqft home built in 1989, and am considering getting the Aprilaire 500 vs the 600. Is that a wise choice |
Answer: | Works quite well in my 2300 sf house. Was built in '92 so not too old but still not as sealed up tight like recent construction. From what I have observed, the humidifier doesn't run all the time and humidity levels have stayed constant even with fluctuating outside temps. |
Question: | can the humidifier bypass duct be on either side ?? The pictures all show it "by passing" to the left - i need it to the right |
Answer: | Yes, it can be changed from left to right. Basically turn the main part of the unit upside down and switch the drain and plug from top to bottom. The name plaque can be removed and installed right side up. Quite simple design. |
Question: | How often do you have to buy new parts? Filters? Etc. And what do they run you each year |
Answer: | I don't mean to say the same thing over again, Patrick said the same thing I'm going to say, but a new pad is all you will need in this unit. I'm also a hvac technican and April air 600ms are our humidifier of choice. I've seen some people who have such bad water the pad gets clogged mid winter, and I've also seen people who have bad water and have been using the same pad for years. rule of thumb to get the most out of your unit is to change the pad every year. You could get away with longer but why would you when you can get replacement pads for cheap at home depot. To install you will need 2 6" 90's, 6" flex duct, 1" zip screws, 2 wire, 3/4 inch pvc with fittings and glue, small piece of 1/2" vinyl tubing (optional), and a pair of tin snips. I would suggest hiring a professional unless you're an avid do it yourself type of person, but it's defiantly something a average homeowner COULD do with enough time and YouTube videos. As far as the solenoid, it almost never goes bad, like Patrick said they usually last around 10 years. I've seen some go bad in as little as 2 but those are 1 in 100 and factory defected. I hope this helps someone down the line. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I disconnect G from furnace board and plug straight into the model 60 control? Also can I use the transformer already there |
Answer: | Yes, you are partially correct. The actions are thus; Remove the thermostat "G" wire from the furnace terminalstrip and wire it to "G" on the Model 60 control.* Wire "Gf" on the Model 60 to "G" on the furnace terminalstrip. Also, you may use the 24v supply on the furnace control board, if it rated for enough amperage. If not, wire in the external transformer.Check your furnace manual. |
Question: | If I use the wiring schematics listed on the manual, will that turn on the blower and not the furnace? Or what wiring schematic do I need |
Answer: | If you use the schematic listed for "Automatic" operation (i.e. intercept the "G" wire between the thermostat and the furnace, putting the new humidistat in between) then this unit will be able to use the furnace blower without firing the furnace. Tapping into the hot water supply (instead of cold) is recommended if you use this feature. My 700 is installed this way and works very well in this configuration. |
Question: | What effect does the humidifier have on furnace filters when installed on the cold air return? Can you use an electrostatic filter |
Answer: | For any humidifier to work at its best and quickly increase the humidity to desired level, it needs to be on hot air side after your furnace. Hot air captures maximum humidity compared to cold air. |
Question: | exactly how does it work |
Answer: | Imagine a screen door with a breeze blowing through it.Now take a hose and dribble water along the top of the screen. Surface tension will make the water fan out and coat the screen, however some water will find its way to the ground. Now that breeze coming through the screen door will evaporate some of the water and become more humid. Crud is less likely to build up on the screen because it is being constantly washed by he water that makes it to the bottom. So that's "exactly" how this humidifier works. The big advantage is that all the carbonates and fine solids don't build up and clog everything, the disadvantage is that the humidifier wastes water since the excess "wash" water goes down the drain. The humidifier consists of a fan that blows air through a special "screen" over which water is dribbled whenever the furnace is heating and the fan is running. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When pushing the plastic tubing, with insert into a metal nptf fitting, which direction should the tapered plastic compression ring face |
Answer: | The tapered end faces the matching taper inside. |
Question: | If I were to connect 2 - 25’ pieces and extend it to 50’, what size coupler do I need |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. There is a 1/4" compression union included with this kit that can be used to connect the two tubes. |
Question: | How does it pierce? And what can it pierce? In the saddle kit |
Answer: | Made to pierce copper 1/2 in line. It has a sharp hollow point and the the saddle with gasket is tightened down to prevent leaking |
Question: | Is there a way I can tap into the water line to the sink, using a threaded tee for the icemaker line, instead of having to pierce copper pipe |
Answer: | Maybe the manufacturer can respond to this question. You're basically asking if you can totally restructure the product to be used in a way that goes against its simplistic design and make it revert back to a use that it was designed to replace. Dave Martin |
