Answer:	I haven't used it on carpet, I have hardwood floors and it slides easily, but you could certainly place a plate of food and a glass of something on it. It's a fairly sturdy table. My couch cushions are about 19" off the floor so that only leaves about 4" of clearance so I can't slide it over my lap.
