The children of The Secret Garden grew up during the reign of Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901—so long that her reign became commonly known as the Victorian era. In those days, food took a long time to cook and serve. Thus, even households that did not have a lot of money employed one or more servants to cook meals, as having a cook saved a great deal of time.

YORKSHIRE BREAKFASTS

Just as Mary, Dickon, and Colin are characters in The Secret Garden, so too is Yorkshire, located in the north of England. In the beginning of the story, when Mary’s carriage first pulls her across the Yorkshire moor, the land appears endless, bleak, and desolate. In fact, though, the moors are covered with lowlying shrubs, such as heather, that bloom a carpet of purple in the summer, and bilberries, which resemble blueberries.

A MANOR LUNCH

In Victorian times, the gentry might consume up to five meals a day: breakfast, an informal luncheon, tea, an elaborate dinner, and a light supper before bed. Mary and Colin, like most upper-class children, were served their main midday meal, called lunch or dinner, in the nursery. If Colin’s mother had been alive, she might have joined them.

AN ENGLISH TEA

By the time Mary, Colin, and Dickon were growing up, afternoon tea was a well-established custom—so much so that Colin imagines the robin bringing tea to him and his mate at five o’clock. Interestingly, the history of tea is very connected to England’s role in colonizing India, where Mary was born. In the early seventeenth century, Dutch traders brought tea to England, but although it was greatly appreciated, it was too expensive for the average family to afford.

FROM THE KITCHEN GARDEN

By the turn of the twentieth century, when Mary was exploring her secret garden, the English kitchen garden had developed a staggering variety of plants. One turn-of-the century seed catalog lists 170 kinds of peas, 150 types of melons, and 58 kinds of beets! Mary had to walk through Misselthwaite Manor’s kitchen gardens before she discovered the secret garden. They were a good distance from the house, to hide the homely sight of vegetables and laboring gardeners from the view of the manor, and to contain the smell of the composting manure.

DICKON’S COTTAGE FOOD

All through The Secret Garden, Dickon’s cottage life is sharply contrasted to the world of Misselthwaite Manor. Yorkshire cottagers, like Dickon’s family, generally lived on porridge, oatcakes, bread, and whatever they could raise. Meat as a main course was not common, although some cottagers owned pigs and chickens, which added variety to their diet. Milk—for drinking, butter, or cheese—was available only if a family owned a milking animal or had the wages to purchase milk.

A TASTE OF INDIA

India was very different from Mary’s new home at Misselthwaite Manor. A battery of servants, including her nursemaid—her Ayah—waited on her constantly. But what was Mary doing in India? India and England’s relationship goes back 400 years, to when England started to colonize India to control the spice trade. By Mary’s time, England’s hold on India was complete, with Queen Victoria named Empress of India. This was the height of the “British Raj,” the name for the colonial English world in India.

GARDEN PICNICS

In a secret garden with good friends, food tastes glorious. Or so Mary and Dickon felt when they savored their simple garden picnics of smoky potatoes and eggs, roasted in an improvised oven, and currant buns, cottage loaf, and fresh milk. From rustic to ornate, picnics were extremely popular in Victorian England, despite the region’s tendency to be damp and drizzly. Children’s parties, hunting expeditions, or family get-togethers were all fine occasions for a picnic.

Answer:	I guess that depends on what you mean by "strong winds"; Mother Nature has a limit on everything! And it also depends on the size of the flag. I have a 3x5 american flag & it stands up well in winds from 20-30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. If the winds get that strong, I just take it down until the winds subside.

Answer:	Yes you can definitely use it outdoors. If you plan on using it outdoors for months at a time I imagine the sun would fade them over time.

Answer:	You would need to purchase more than one set. I haven’t put mine up yet, but they posted it was 84 ft of vines.

Answer:	It is about 4 1/2" to 6" wide. About every 10/ to 12" along the strand of ivy there are no leaves for 3 inches. I would recommend doubling up on your strands if you need it bushy. For my project which was using the vine climbing a tree I was able to use just one strand at a time. It did have an odor but I put it outside for a day to air it and the odor has not returned. Hope this helps you.

Answer:	No it seem's that the water flow needs to be a lil stronger and i was looking into replacing the pump. The waterflow is trickling at best.

Answer:	No, not safe for fish. Although you put in distilled water, you have to add an algaecide and cleanser to the water periodically. And the fountain is not that deep.

Answer:	I wouldn't drop a bowling ball on them but I have a reasonably heavy lamp on the smaller one and all seems fine. Also my dog has tried to knock them over a few times but they're stable.

Answer:	Go to a hardware store and bring with you the instructions that should have come with the table. Also take one of the table's legs. I did this, the hardware store was very helpful, and when I got home with the parts I needed, I was able to easily put the table together.
