Answer:	The shelving unit also serves as the right-side legs of the desk. You could use the shelves as a free-standing unit, but the desk would not be able to stand on its own.

Answer:	The shelves with the curve on them are setup to only go on the right side, they have inserts in them that only align one way. I really wanted it on the left so ended up drilling out these inserts and running longer bolts through the frame. It works but I have bolt heads showing on my shelves so it's not quite as clean as original setup.
