Answer:	medium density fiberboard. Instead of the table being made of a solid piece of wood, it is made of mdf. It's wood by product compressed into a thick shape. Answer:	I was able to fit the pole and the base easily. But you're right that there are no screws or anything to hold the pole in place with either the top or base. If it becomes an issue, you might try to use some type of glue or adhesive to keep the pieces intact.
