Step 1

Remove the dust cap from the tire valve, then connect the air hose to the tire valve stem, and then tighten it to the tire valve stem.

I have used one set of standard alkaline batteries for three years only blowing up a mattress twice a year. If I were winter camping I would go with a manual air pump or self inflating mattress. Since most mattress leak, you need to factor in blowing the thing up each night.
