Answer:	I'm not sure what "kind" of foam it is, but I can tell you it is quite solid and firm. If you lay on it (say for your back), it will give only very slightly – perhaps just enough so as to not hurt. And thus, you are able to put real pressure on tight muscles. I wanted it for my back, and I found it to be just a bit too hard, so I ended up having more success with my tightly rolled rubber Yoga mat.

Answer:	Density preference has to do with your sensitivity to pain and how tight your muscles are. If your muscles are really tight use a softer roller. If you don't handle pain well use a softer roller. I have a very dense roller which works great on my back but it's too hard for my shoulders which are usually very tight. This roller is soft, probably as soft they are made.
