User questions & answers

Question: Other than the added vitamin b12, what is the difference between these tablets and the powdered brewer’s yeast that Solgar makes
Answer: I doubt it would. Needs gunnels or rails near the water line to hook over. If you had open railing on your pontoon it might hook over the lowest part.

Strawberry-Peppercorn Short Mead

This recipe was one of the first short meads I brewed. I served it at an outdoors art and music benefit bash in Brooklyn, where it was about 100°F outdoors. The strawberry peppercorn short mead was a huge hit, and the keg kicked in an hour, beating out a slew of beer and cocktails. The spiciness of the peppercorns is a wonderful complement to the sweetness and delicate floral nature of the strawberry. Carbonated lower-alcohol beverages are delightfully refreshing on a hot summer day, but the strawberry aroma will bring you back to warmer times on even the coldest of winter days.

Yield - 1 gallon

- 1 package (1–1.2 ounce) freeze-dried strawberries

- 1/2 tbsp. mixed peppercorns

- 1.25 pound honey

- 1 gal. spring water

- 1/16 teaspoon yeast nutrient

- 1/4 package dry champagne yeast

Instructions

1. Place your yeast packet, stopper or lid, airlock, and scissors (to open the yeast packet) into a sanitizing solution. Clean and sanitize a glass jug or jar.

2. Pulverize the freeze-dried strawberries. A small food processor works best, but I’ve used a mortar and pestle, too. You can also transfer the berries to a zippered plastic bag, squeeze the air out, seal, and hand-crush or use a rolling pin on the berries. Crack the pepper slightly—a mortar and pestle works best for this. Place the crushed berries and peppercorns into a heatproof glass measuring pitcher.

3. Heat 2 cups of water to a boil. A teapot is perfect for this purpose. Pour the off-boil water over your berries and peppercorns, add yeast nutrient, stir, and steep for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, place your tea in an ice bath to cool to below 75°F.

4. Place the sanitized jug or jar on the scale. Zero the scale and add 1.25 pounds of honey.

5. Remove the jug from the scale, add filtered water leaving enough room for the tea, cap or cover the opening securely, and shake until the honey is combined. Take a look at the bottom of your jug; if honey is still clinging on, keep shaking.

6. Uncap the jug and add the cooled strawberry-peppercorn tea. Do not strain the tea.

7. Top off with water to bring up to 1 gallon, recap or cover, and shake gently to combine. You may take a gravity reading using your hydrometer or refractometer at this point if you like. Your OG will be in the 1.042 to 1.046 range.

8. Uncap, pitch the yeast, and place a stopper or grommeted lid and airlock on the jug.

9. Ferment between 66°F and 76°F for 5 to 14 days.

10. Taste after a week. If it’s at your desired sweetness, package using the directions on pages 26 to 31. If it’s too sweet, continue to taste every day or every other day until the mead is where you want. Higher fermentation temperatures will increase speed of fermentation. If you are taking gravity readings, I usually find 1.004 to 1.008 to be the ideal range. If you’re using fruit or other flavorings that float, I recommend cold-crashing your short mead overnight before bottling. The flavorings will fall to the bottom, and the short mead will be easier to bottle. If you don’t cold-crash, I recommend using a filter or strainer to bottle.

Variations

Blueberry-Nutmeg Short Mead - Use a 1- to 1.2-ounce package of freeze-dried blueberries and a dash of freshly grated nutmeg in place of the strawberries and peppercorns. Pulverize your blueberries and follow the directions above.

Spiced Cranberry Short Mead - Use a 1- to 1.2-ounce bag of freeze-dried cranberries and 1/2 cinnamon stick, 3 cloves, 2 star anise, and a strip of orange zest in place of the strawberries and peppercorns. You do not need to crush the spices; just use them whole. This is a wonderful beverage to serve in late fall and during the winter holidays. It is especially nice with Thanksgiving dinner and may be served warm as well, like a mulled wine.

Mango Chili Short Mead - Use a 1-ounce package of freeze-dried mango and 3 dried pequin chili peppers in place of the strawberries and peppercorns for a spicy, fruity mead. Crush the mango and chilies and use more or less chilies depending on your heat preference.

Peach Thyme Short Mead - Use a 1-ounce package of freeze-dried peaches and 1/8 teaspoon fresh chopped thyme or a heaping 1⁄8 teaspoon dried thyme in place of the strawberries and peppercorns.

The Mad Monk’s Medieval Metheglin (page 128-129)

PROCESS

1. Make a tea out of the herbs and oak bark. It’s best to do this part a day or two before mead-making day; simply steep the herbs in hot (not boiling) water the night before to get the optimal health and flavor benefits.

2. Submerge as much of the hive as you can under water into a gallon jar or other container.

3. Prepare a smoky, low-heat fire, and place all ingredients except the yeast, lemons, and raisins in a pot; set the pot on a rack over the coals of the fire or over some heated, flat rocks.

4. Stir the must and skim off any wax or other scum that floats to the surface.

5. Take the pot off of the fire after 30 to 45 minutes, cover with a lid, and set aside for several hours or overnight.

6. When the mead is “blood warm” (warm to the touch or room temperature), add the yeast, backslop, or barm, or proceed with wild fermentation.

7. Add the lemon juice and raisins.

8. Age, rack, drink, and bottle.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this supposed to smell like sulphur or is there something wrong with my bottle
Answer: Yes, I'm reasonably certain it is vegan. I am purchasing it on the presumption that it is vegan. A list of vegan multivitamins lists "vegetarian multiple" from this brand as a vegan supplement. The brand seems to use the strict-vegetarian definition of vegetarian (strict vegetarian is synonymous with a vegan diet, as opposed to the common meaning of the word "vegetarian" which is actually ovo-lacto-vegetarian). https://plenteousveg.com/vegan-vitamins/#multi Further evidence of this is that on the Solgar website, they only have a search box for "vegetarian". Searching for D3, they list no vegetarian items. Since D3 is often obtained from sheep's wool, it is often labeled "vegetarian" by many brands. Thus, it appears they don't label things that are considered "vegetarian" As of my writing this, the amazon description says: "GLUTEN FREE & SUITABLE FOR VEGANS: All vegetable capsules are certified gluten free. They are free of: gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast, sugar, and sodium. They are also free of artificial flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives" This description is evidence, but not proof. I once ordered vitamin D3 that said "vegan friendly" in the description, but it was obtained from sheep's wool. I had already opened it and taken a few. They refunded me, so there was no harm done because I didn't contribute to the market (thus, I consumed them anyway because they were vegan at that point). They since appear to have fixed the description. To be perfectly, explicitly clear, it was a different brand where this happened. This brand, "Solgar", appears to label all vegan products as "vegetarian", as I've explained with my reasoning above. This product is labeled as "vegetarian" on their website. Additionally, all of the ingredient appear to be intrinsically vegan.
Question: Does stink like rotten eggs
Answer: Acer Nitro 5
Question: Can you crush or cut these tablets
Answer: yes
Question: Country of Origin
Answer: not from what I have seen

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product contain soy
Answer: Our dog just swims up to it, maybe he puts his back paws on the first step. I haven’t watched him since last summer, but he does not need help. There are ridges on the steps.
Question: Why do these vitamin pills smell like medicine? Did your pills had smell to it when you open the container each time
Answer: Yes but you may have to add lower support to your dock for the lower arms of the step
Question: By when will it be delivered? Thank you
Answer: Without seeing the above ground pool and the steel frame you are referring to I can't advise you.
Question: I have dehydrated skin (my skin type is oily though). Heard that vit e supplements help relieve dehydrated skin condition. Will this product help
Answer: Not yet....plans in the works
Question: What is expiration date
Answer: No, it is designed for cement sided pools.
Question: Is it possible to cut these in half, or are they capsules
Answer: Possibly. There needs to be a platform attached to the above ground pool - the top length of the dog ramp requires it for the counterbalance and weight bags. In addition, you need to be careful about where the support struts contact the side walls of the pool. The support struts were designed for cement walls - however, it may work fine with a small modification to the struts.
Question: What are the rest of the ingredients
Answer: Not really. You can adjust the distance of the bottom outriggers but that is more of a brace to the bottom of your boat than an approach angle of the ramp. One thing that may help is adding a foam float noodle to the pvc pipe that hangs at the bottom of the ramp to allow it float better. Haven't done that yet myself. Dog still needs some assist to get into boat at the steep angle of the ramp.
Question: Why does the description state “capsule” but the bottle and reviews state “tablet
Answer: it is possible but i dont think so. the picture does no really show the bottom bracket is designed to go under the boat. So on a kayak it would not have the support of the bottom of the boat.
