8 best pad alarms

A pad alarm is a device commonly used in healthcare settings and as a Mobility Daily Living Aid to help monitor and assist individuals who may be at risk of falling or require assistance with their daily living activities. These alarms are particularly useful in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and for home healthcare.

Here are some key features and aspects of pad alarms:

  1. Pressure-Sensitive Pads: Pad alarms typically consist of pressure-sensitive pads that can be placed on a chair, wheelchair, bed, or other surfaces where an individual may be seated or lying down. These pads can detect changes in pressure when the person attempts to get up or move.

  2. Alarm System: The pressure pad is connected to an alarm system, which can be a standalone device or integrated into a larger nurse call system. When the pressure on the pad changes, such as when the person attempts to leave a bed or chair, the alarm is triggered.

  3. Audible and Visual Alerts: The alarm system emits audible alerts, such as a loud beep or chime, to notify caregivers or healthcare professionals that assistance is needed. Some systems also include visual indicators like flashing lights.

  4. Caregiver Notification: In healthcare settings, the alarm can be connected to a central monitoring station or nurses' station. When the alarm is triggered, it alerts the caregivers or nursing staff, enabling them to respond quickly to the patient's needs.

  5. Fall Prevention: Pad alarms are particularly helpful in fall prevention for individuals at risk of falling, such as elderly individuals or those with mobility issues. They provide an early warning system, allowing caregivers to intervene before a fall occurs.

  6. Adjustable Sensitivity: Some pad alarms allow for sensitivity adjustment to accommodate different patient needs. For example, caregivers can adjust the alarm's sensitivity to avoid false alarms while still ensuring patient safety.

  7. Wireless Options: Modern pad alarm systems may offer wireless connectivity, allowing for greater flexibility in placement and ease of use.

  8. Battery or AC-Powered: Pad alarms can be powered by batteries or connected to an electrical outlet, depending on the model and usage requirements.

  9. Home Use: In addition to healthcare facilities, pad alarms are also available for home use. They can provide peace of mind to family members and caregivers, ensuring that they are alerted if a loved one attempts to get out of bed or a chair unassisted.

Pad alarms play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and quality of life for individuals with limited mobility or those at risk of falls. They are an important component of daily living aids and healthcare equipment, helping to reduce accidents and improve the overall well-being of patients and individuals requiring assistance.

User questions & answers

Question: would a bag of clothing dropped on the mat set it off? we are trying to deter people breaking in through the deposit chute
Answer: This can be adjusted. Clothing will typically not set it off in a deposit chute because the large surface area spreads the pressure. To reduce activation from heavily filled plastic bag, cushion the mat with a layer of soft material. Conversely, to increase sensitivity, place a small hard object with corner (such as a 2x4 lumber) under the mat. Note that the alarm only stays on for 30 seconds even if the mat is kept pressurized. The alarm is activated for 30 seconds upon state change only -- ie: when pressure is applied or removed. If the state does not change, the alarm stops after 30 seconds.
Question: MY DOG WEIGHS 10 LBS, WILL THE ALARM GO OFF
Answer: Yes! My cat is only 6 lbs and she sets it off. It is very loud, so be prepared. It works great. I have it outside under a doormat and the elements don't seem to bother it all. Great buy...
Question: will a cat be heavy enough to set it off
Answer: I have mine in a business, but I do have cats at home, & I believe it should work fine. It is simple to set up & works great !
Question: Is it affected by cold
Answer: Ours is at the front door of our business in Winder, Georgia. We have some pretty cold days and nights. I could honestly say it never has been affected by cold with us.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product fit for person that under 120 lbs
Answer: When the mattress the pad is being used upon is a firm, innerspring mattress, this item will likely still work fine for someone under 120 pounds. However, if the mattress is not firm, or has anything "non-standard" about it, such as it is a TempurPedic, memory foam, or air mattress, or if there is some type of padding that has been added to the bed, this 10" x 30" sensor pad may not properly register the body at all times. This can cause false alarms, or majorly delayed alerts. You may want to consider a system with a 20" x 30" sensor pad instead, which is more effective under those scenarios, and can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYA53BW
Question: does this have an on/off switch? is there an AC adaptor? how long do batteries last
Answer: Rob- it did have on/off. Not sure on the AC Adapter... Batteries lasted a few weeks minimum. I don't remember there being any issue with them at all.Was happy with the product. Good luck.
Question: Does this make a sound when the patient gets in the bed
Answer: No only when they get out. When I put my mom to bed I always press on it just to make sure it will sound when she gets up.
Question: The "C" batteries power the receiving alarm unit? What powers the transmitter in the pad
Answer: The transmitter inside the pad is powered by a non-replaceable lithium battery. The battery has been engineered to last the duration of the pad's life term, which is one year. Replacement pads are available separately from this system. Note that this system should always come with a one year warrantied sensor pad, not 45 or 90 days. If you ever receive anything but a one year pad, you should immediately contact Amazon and ask to return the item, as that means the seller you bought the system from is not offering the correct product. We do not recommend re-purchasing from the same seller, as you are likely to again receive the same incorrect product.
