9 best dna tests costs
The cost of DNA tests can vary widely depending on the type of test, the complexity of the analysis, and where the test is conducted. Here's a general overview of the factors that can influence the cost of DNA tests related to genetic tests, health tests, home tests, medical supplies equipment, and health household products:
Type of Test: Different DNA tests serve different purposes, and their costs can vary accordingly. For example, a basic ancestry test that examines your genetic heritage may be less expensive than a comprehensive health screening that assesses your risk for various medical conditions.
Provider: The provider or laboratory conducting the DNA test can impact the cost. Some reputable companies offer direct-to-consumer DNA testing services with transparent pricing, while others may charge more for additional services or consultation.
Complexity of Analysis: The complexity of the genetic analysis required for a specific test can affect the cost. Tests that involve in-depth sequencing and analysis of numerous genetic markers may be more expensive than simpler tests.
Sample Collection Method: Home DNA testing kits that require you to collect and submit your own samples (such as saliva or cheek swabs) are often more affordable than tests that involve a medical professional collecting blood or tissue samples.
Coverage and Reporting: Some DNA testing services provide comprehensive reports and ongoing updates, which can add to the overall cost. These reports may include detailed health insights, ancestry information, and more.
Add-Ons and Extras: Additional features or services, such as expedited processing, access to a larger database of genetic data, or consultation with a genetic counselor, may come at an extra cost.
Promotions and Discounts: Many DNA testing companies offer promotions and discounts at various times throughout the year. Be on the lookout for these to potentially lower the cost of your test.
Insurance Coverage: In some cases, health insurance may cover the cost of specific DNA tests if they are deemed medically necessary by a healthcare provider. However, coverage varies, so it's essential to check with your insurance company.
Government or Research Studies: Some DNA tests may be available at reduced or no cost through government-sponsored research studies or clinical trials.
Overall, the cost of DNA tests can range from less than $100 for basic ancestry tests to several hundred dollars or more for comprehensive health-related genetic testing. It's crucial to research and compare different testing options, understand what each test includes, and consider your specific needs and budget when choosing a DNA test.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does this brand lump british & irish together? (i noticed ancestry dna lists them separately). the genes are significantly different. thanks |
Answer: | It will if you have a significant difference, if that is the case, it will drill down to say Irish. For instance, my husband (who is from Ireland) was 99% British and Irish, and then drilled down to 99% Irish. I was 88% from Spain and Portugal (I'm from Portugal) and then drilled down to 88% Portugal. I never mentioned to them I was from Portugal so the fact that they determined that I was Portuguese and not Spanish or a mixture was a surprise. Now, if you only have a small percentage they may not be able to distinguish between the two groups. Hope this helped! |
Question: | Does this test include access to raw data |
Answer: | There is access to your raw data, however if you recently took the test and have results under the V5 chip, you will not be able to upload to many third party sites at this time as this raw data is not yet supportrd |
Question: | In regards to finding out my Native American roots, will this provide ancestral records to tribal affiliation |
Answer: | Not only will it not provide tribal affiliation, there is a notable rate of false negatives for Native American ancestry in DNA testing right now (both 23andme and other companies). Meaning these results might say you have zero Native ancestry even when you do have some. People who have their family tree well documented and live on reservations have had this happen, due to the comparison samples the companies use to test against. |
Question: | do i pay for shipping to return test |
Answer: | you don't need to pay for return shipping but you'll probably need to send it more than once because they lose kits all the time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the saliva still work for the test after 2 months? I have to ship the saliva from Panama |
Answer: | As long as you've added the buffer solution to your sample, it's good for up to six months. However, 23andMe sample kits must be used in and returned for analysis from, the country to which the order is originally shipped. |
Question: | Im confused! some reviews say the government banned health reports yet 23&me advertises a health report. what am i missing |
Answer: | As of October 21, 2015, 23andMe has launched a completely new website experience to customers in the United States. The new experience includes access to more than 60 personalized genetic reports that include carrier status*, wellness, and trait reports. You can preview a full list of available reports here: https://www.23andme.com/service/ |
Question: | It says one lithium battery required? What does that mean |
Answer: | No batteries are required. |
Question: | do i get the same results from promethease for the $99 23&me kit as the $199 kit? which one should i get??? ty |
Answer: | I would say that yes you get the same results. Or atleast that is my understanding from this statement that was on the promethease website."23andMe $99 "ancestry only" product, is sufficient for Promethease, or the $199 "ancestry + health" product, which also includes carrier status reports. One time payment, lifetime membership. Both products use the (same) customized Illumina chip which covers 25695 of the 94743 SNPs in SNPedia. Less than 2,000 of these are known to be in ClinVar; presumably some of the proprietarily named "i-SNPs" correspond to ClinVar/SNPedia entries as well but 23andMe does not reveal which publicly or to its non-corporate users."https://www.snpedia.com/index.php/Testing |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says you need an Ancestry account. Do you have to pay for their online site |
Answer: | No, you don't have to pay, yet again, to see your results. If you want to see how you relate to other people via your DNA, yes, you do need a subscription. There is a 50% discount for the first 6 months or so, but you need to ask for it. I found my Father using Ancestry, BTW. |
Question: | What happens to your DNA once the test is performed |
Answer: | Nothing happens to it. If you are worried about someone somehow getting into the database your account is only identified as a random number. You can also send in the test under a fake name (few in my family did this, used a Pets name the street name) Only downside to doing that is you won’t be able to link to any potential relatives. At the end of the day I know DNA can be obtained from just about anything I touch or use in so if someone really wants it they can get it -shrug- |
Question: | Does this kit provide info about genetic snp's like mthfr mutations |
Answer: | The AncestryDNA or 23 and Me “Ethnicity + HEALTH” tests DO provide info as to what gene mutations you have and a list of what health issues you are dispositioned for due to said mutation. I, for instance, found out I have the MTHFR gene mutation. I learned who I got it from & some scary stuff, such as, being dispositioned for Schizophrenia and miscarriages (and about 99 more things). It is really hard to find a doctor who knows anything about it. You’d need to visit mthfr(dot)net and research for yourself. Sadly. |
Question: | Why should i buy from amazon when there is a disclaimer stating not to because the kit could be rejected |
Answer: | What the others above said was correct. It’s sold by Ancestry but shipped by Amazon. (Like most things here. Brands/sellers are selling their item on Amazon & Amazon ships. I just got my results back & my adult son should have his back any day. Super easy process and it’s fun! I was very surprised by mine. 100% Trusted to buy from Amazon. If you buy it from Ancestry site you’ll be paying like $40 in shipping (I think it’s actually more than $40) & why I purchased them here! Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do the results give countries or just continents? I would like one that gives specific countries |
Answer: | Just a general response to all the older responses to questions. All of the DNA companies are constantly changing their DNA results. The more people that have the test, that more data goes into improving the accuracy and/or improves the ability to be more specific. Therefore, just wanted to say, as time goes on, the older responses may no longer be valid. |
Question: | Do you get both maternal and paternal lines with this test |
Answer: | Not distinct, separate lines, no. But you do get those results, just mixed up. AncestryDNA tests only autosomal chromosomes; that is, non-sex chromosomes. These are the 22 chromosomes everyone has regardless of gender. That means your results will show both your parents' ancestry, even if you're female, but it'll be combined - you won't be able to tell which parent provided which country or DNA result. For maternal- and paternal-specific ancestry (mtDNA and YDNA, respectively), 23andme provides this testing. AncestryDNA stopped doing it in 2014 (see https://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/06/12/comments-on-y-dna-and-mtdna-tests/). I recommend doing both AncestryDNA and 23andme for a more comprehensive picture of your background. And if you're female, ask a male relative (father, brother, paternal uncle) to do 23andme so you can extrapolate your paternal YDNA and haplogroup, since females do not carry the Y sex chromosome. Again, this is not available via AncestryDNA.If you are only interested in overall, general, "big-picture" results, and aren't concerned with specifics like which part of the world your maternal/paternal line came from per se, or your haplogroups, then AncestryDNA is the way to go. |
Question: | Are these results on a par with 23andme? Are they identical or is there more info or less |
Answer: | Depends on what you’re using it for. I took Ancestry and my sister to 23andme. We were looking to confirm our relatives not our ethnicity. We had way more matches and have been able to find common ancestors with other DNA matches. 23 and me is harder to sort through the matches and I’m not sure If you can even see other people’s family trees as i haven’t figured it out in almost a year |
Question: | How many past generations does this test go back? Will it test going back a few hundred years |
Answer: | That depends on your ancestry and the number of people of similar ancestry who have tested. Biggest group is European heritage. I have 6th and 7th generation matches going back to colonial New England because there was a good degree of pedigree collapse (genetic reinforcement due to small populations intermarrying) The majority of matches will be in the 4th cousin range. However, matches are pointless unless you have a decent family tree (at least 4 generations) and respond to messages because you will not be able to make the connections otherwise. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how accuracy is this test |
Answer: | I feel it’s pretty accurate. I had the test done with Ancestory first and thought I’d do the My Heritage to see how they compared. They were very close in most all. A couple differences but nothing major. I do trust the accuracy. |
Question: | How many people can I use it on |
Answer: | Hi, the test is for one person. I hope that helps. Kind regards, Shlomi - MyHeritage Support team. |
Question: | do I have to pay a subscription fee to access information |
Answer: | If you are not a registered user at MyHeritage, you need to create a free account once you ordered and received your kit, in order to activate it. This is done in only a few steps, that are explained in the package you will receive. Once registered, you will be able to track your order after it arrived back at our lab with your sample, and later on view your personal ethnicity report and DNA matches. The DNA Matching is a free feature, which allows you to be matched to other people who share DNA with you and are likely related to you. If you are facing a brick wall in your genealogy research, you can use DNA Matching to find new relatives and to learn new information about your ancestors. *Please note however, that some of the additional features may require a paid subscription. For more information about our DNA services, we recommend to take a look at the FAQs in our Help Center by clicking below: https://www.myheritage.com/help-center#/path/DNA/MyHeritage-DNA-Test/ |
Question: | Are the swab samples being destroyed after the results are posted |
Answer: | As per our Terms & Conditions, users may request their DNA sample to be destroyed. We can only do so after the results are uploaded - destroying a DNA sample at the lab will not affect the online results. However, once a DNA sample is destroyed, there will be no option to retest the sample. Usually, one vial is for safekeeping which we can use, for example, if we decide to upgrade the chip for testing in the future. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do you let the swabs "dry" before putting them in the sleeve to mail |
Answer: | I used the little places in the sleeve to let them dry and I let them dry about an hour. The put them into the sleeve, unsealed and sent the whole thing back. I got got good results on all specimens |
Question: | Can you do this DNA test on a puppy or is it better to wait until the dog is full grown |
Answer: | Actually you should wait at least until the puppy is no longer nursing on the mom. That Can skew the results. |
Question: | Will it provide results for mixed beeeds |
Answer: | One of my puppies results came back with 12.5% “breed groups”. If you want those specific breeds, they charge an additional $89. Says results in a couple days, I got them in a few seconds. So they obviously already had that info ready. Deceptive advertising to play with the results that way... |
Question: | Will the test identify chubacabra dna |
Answer: | Yes! The test results showed that my dog had 20% chupacabra DNA but it could be that my dog ate a chupacabra. I’m not 110% sure |

Question: | Hello i bought this kit about 3 months ago and i found it a few days ago after i lost it, do they expire ? i tried logging in says” account inactive |
Answer: | Hi! No, the kit doesn't expire. Have you submitted the samples yet? Until your results are ready, you'll get the "account inactive" message when trying to log in. To check on the status of your test, call us directly at 1-800-329-3758 (M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern). |
Question: | Can you swab mother and father for results |
Answer: | For a paternity test, there needs to be at least one child and one possible father. The mother can also participate to help strengthen results, but her DNA is not usually required. |
Question: | Do you just need the child and fathers dna? Not the mothers |
Answer: | Yes. Although the mother's DNA can help strengthen results under certain circumstances, it is usually not required. Should it turn out to be needed, the lab will suspend testing and ask for the mother's samples. We'll then include her in the test at no extra charge. |
Question: | My tracking hasn’t said my kit has reached the testing facility after 2 weeks. Should I call the facility |
Answer: | My kit reached the facility in 3 days but didn't get to a tech for 2 weeks. I would call the facility to see if it got lost. |

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is DNA paternity testing?
- DNA testing is the most accurate method available for determining paternity. Its power lies in the ability to trace the pattern of inheritance for separate regions of the genetic material (chromosomes). From this information a probability of paternity can be calculated. This number reaches 99.99999% in most cases. The percentage of random men of the same race that can be excluded as the biological father is also computed for every case.
Does the mother have to be tested as well?
- No, although results cannot be as conclusive. Ideally, the mother, child, and alleged father should be tested. A child receives half of their DNA from their mother, and the other half from their father. Because the DNA half that the child receives from the mother will match the mother's DNA exactly, the remaining unmatched DNA matches the biological father.
Can I test more than one child or alleged parent?
- Yes, for an additional charge.
