Taking a Temperature

Ensure the ear is clear of earwax and debris and the tip of the thermometer is clean.

Choose one ear to use for readings and stick to it. There is a small temperature difference between both sides of the head and so choosing one ear will produce more precise readings.

Answer:	I bought it for use at home so I could take my temp before I go to work. I work for a hospital and it reads the same as the professional one I use at work every day. So I would say it is very accurate.

Answer:	No, I advise you stick with a rectal thermometer. I used this and it read 100 but then to be safe did a rectal reading and it was 98.2.... pediatricians also advise not to use a forehead thermometer on newborns.

Answer:	I think every instrument must be calibrated, especially the thermometer. A degree off could mean the difference between identifying a fever to get tested or not. I calibrated mine against a mercury thermometer and it was about 0.6 less. So I add 0.6 to my readings. I also take the average of at least two readings whenever I test.
