14 best wood finishes

Wood finishes are coatings applied to wooden surfaces to enhance their appearance, protect them from damage, and increase their durability. These finishes are commonly used in woodworking and furniture making. Here are some key points about wood finishes:

  1. Types of Wood Finishes:

    • Varnish: Varnish is a durable, transparent finish that provides a glossy or satin sheen. It offers excellent protection against moisture, UV rays, and abrasion. Polyurethane varnish is a popular choice.
    • Shellac: Shellac is a natural resin-based finish that produces a warm, amber-toned appearance. It's relatively easy to apply but may not be as durable as some other finishes.
    • Lacquer: Lacquer is a fast-drying finish that can be clear or colored. It produces a smooth, glossy surface and is often used on furniture.
    • Stain: Stain is a finish that adds color to wood while allowing its grain to show through. It's often used to enhance the wood's natural beauty.
    • Oil Finish: Oils, such as linseed oil and tung oil, penetrate the wood's surface, bringing out its natural grain and color. They provide some protection but may require periodic reapplication.
    • Water-Based Finishes: These finishes are eco-friendly and produce low VOC emissions. They are available in various sheens and provide good protection.
  2. Application:

    • Most wood finishes can be applied using brushes, rags, or sprayers. The method chosen can affect the final appearance.
    • Proper surface preparation, including sanding and cleaning, is crucial before applying any finish.
    • Multiple coats are often required to achieve the desired look and durability.
  3. Sheen Levels:

    • Wood finishes come in different sheen levels, including gloss, semi-gloss, satin, and matte. The choice of sheen depends on personal preference and the intended use of the finished wood.
  4. Protection and Durability:

    • Wood finishes protect wood from moisture, heat, UV rays, and physical wear. They can significantly extend the life of wooden surfaces.
    • Some finishes are more durable than others. For high-traffic areas or outdoor applications, a more robust finish is typically recommended.
  5. Maintenance:

    • To maintain the appearance and longevity of finished wood, regular cleaning and occasional reapplication of the finish may be necessary.
    • Cleaning should be done with mild soapy water or specialized wood cleaners, avoiding abrasive materials that can damage the finish.
  6. Specialized Finishes:

    • Some specialized wood finishes are designed for specific purposes, such as food-safe finishes for cutting boards and countertops or marine-grade finishes for boat woodwork.
  7. Environmental Considerations:

    • Water-based finishes are generally considered more environmentally friendly due to their low VOC content.
    • Some finishes, like tung oil and shellac, are derived from natural sources, making them eco-friendly options.

Wood finishes not only protect and preserve wood but also contribute to the aesthetics of wooden surfaces. The choice of finish depends on factors such as the type of wood, intended use, desired appearance, and environmental considerations. Properly applied wood finishes can enhance the beauty and longevity of wood products.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have any nut based ingedients
Answer: I believe this is not to he used as a finish for cutting surfaces so I personally would not use it for utensils. It’s probably best to use a good quality oil designed for that task.
Question: Is this a good product to use for a small butcher block kitchen island? I plan to sand and stain first, then apply this product
Answer: If you build up the finish then yes, but that would take a long time. A better choice would be food safe epoxy especially for vessels that will be holding liquids for an extend period of time. I would not use this product for drinking vessels.
Question: how does it work on live edge wood with some rough bark still on
Answer: Yes it can
Question: Can I use it on top of wood stains
Answer: Don't know what's in it but it is a finish that is for food contact. I use it on doll beds. General does make a finish that is for toys but I do not know what is the difference.

User questions & answers

Question: Looking for a watco butcher block finish that is a satin finish. which product will give me that
Answer: Yes it will work on veneer, and has no harsh chemicals that would affect glue. Also you put on very thin coats to achieve a finish, so it would never super saturate a surface.
Question: I sanded butcher block, wiped on evenly and finish keeps coming out blotchy even after light sanding What else can I do
Answer: It depends on how often you want to reapply and your goal for a finish. I used it on my floors and love it but if you're looking for one application durability, an external use is probably not the best for this product. If, however, you're fine with a periodic reapplication then this will work for you.
Question: Can someone tell me the ingredients. Thanks
Answer: I have done over milk paint and it worked well. Some of the paint dissolved, but that was the look I wanted.
Question: I am planning on using this on a wood surface counter I am making for the in-law kitchen. Would this water proof the wood as well? Im putting a sink
Answer: I used this on a bed for my 2 year old daughter. It looks really nice, but you have to put it on incredibly thin or it will take days to dry. Has a waxy smell, but not strong or even really bad. I put a layer on with a rag and it took about a week to dry. Go very very thin and multiple coats, you will have nice results. I built that bed about 10 months ago and the finish is still holding up well, no reapplying yet although I might be getting close to needing to.

Rust-Oleum's History

Solving challenges is the very foundation of who we are. After all, in the beginning, our founder, sea captain Robert Fergusson, didn’t particularly care about paint. He just wanted to keep his ship intact. That’s why, when he noticed that an accidental splash of fish oil had stopped the relentless spread of corrosion on his rusty metal deck, he immediately recognized it for what it was: A valuable solution.

The same passion that drove the Captain to spend his next few years creating the world’s first rust-preventative paint still drives us today. When we see a problem, we work diligently until we’ve perfected a solution—which has led to some of the most cutting-edge, durable and innovative products in the industry. If you’ve got a surface you need to protect or a look you want to transform, you’ve come to the right place. We have a coating for every challenge.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work on scratches and water marks on furniture
Answer: This is not the product you want. It gives a high gloss finish, almost like glass. You might try a mixture of 3 parts mineral oil to 1 part bees wax, this will give you a nice satin finish, protect from water and is also food safe.
Question: Does this work on antique oriental teak-wood furniture
Answer: Just a heads up. The longer Watco butcher block oil is exposed to air, while in the can, the thicker it will become. If the thicker product is then applied to a board, it will loose some of it's penetrating capabilities and will get tacky sooner. You may have also purchased something that's been on the shelf a while. Typically, it's very thin when fresh. That said, I always wipe off the excess within a minute or two, sometimes this will take some extra effort as it does become tacky. Stay vigilant with the removal of the excess oil as it will help eliminate those blotchy spots, so wipe it down well. FYI, some woods may tend to show some slight spottiness with Watco's despite the best vigilance on your part.
Question: Can u use this on wooden drawers that are hard to close
Answer: what are the ingredients including type of oil?
Question: Why does it say “warning cancer and reproductive harm” on the package I received
Answer: Yes it will waterproof very well indeed! I have a cutting board that my husband made me 3 years ago, I keep my knives butcher sharp and use my cutting board almost every day. I wish I could send a picture of how well it has stood up to my knives and washing it with warm water and mild soap every time! There are barely any marks on it, in fact it dulls my knives. I also made an umbrella stand from hardwood and finished with Butcher Block. We live in rainy Germany and there's not one water stain on it! I couldn't say enough about this product! You won't be sorry for using it. I would put at least 2 maybe even 3 coats on it if it's a counter top. It goes a long way because it isn't real thick, so I use thin coats but a couple should do you. Good luck!

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work as a good lubricant for wooden gears
Answer: Depends on the finish Won't do much for water marks but will hide scratches !
Question: where is this product made
Answer: Since I don’t have any antique oriental teak-wood furniture, I cannot say for sure. I would think the Beeswax Paste would work fine. I would use a small amount to see how it does.
Question: what is the difference between the wax finish and the plain oil? can I use just one of them
Answer: The bees wax does not stay moist. I use to take some petroleum gel and rubbed that on the sides of the drawers. It worked.
Question: Will this work on a wooden grill stand work top ,stored outside
Answer: I looked on the top of the can of WoodWorks Beeswax Paste Wood Finish & Polish, on the sides, and on the bottom of the can, and I did NOT see any type of warning about cancer and reproductive harm anywhere on the can. After all Bees made the beeswax.

User questions & answers

Question: I purchased General Finishes gel stain and gel topcoat-satin. The stain and first 2 coats of topcoat went on beautifully, last coat cloudy and streaky
Answer: Yes
Question: I'd like to use this product over very dark black latex paint. I've seen it can yellowing over time but I'm wondering if that's a problem with black
Answer: I don't know. This is a great product though for giving wood bowls or cutting boards a beautiful finish! It's food grade!
Question: How many coats do I need to apply
Answer: I noticed the wax has a tendency to darken the wood more than the oil. Drying time is shorter with the wax. Both can be buffed out for a semi-gloss finish. I would see no reason to use both products on one object. The wax and oil both provide a long lasting finish, but the oil does require a longer drying time. I have and do use both products.
Question: I am going to use the general finishes gel stain, which top coat should i use? the gel topcoat or the arm-r-seal? which will protect the best
Answer: It will apply liberally wait over night wipe excess of (if there are dry areas apply more and wait overnight again.). Apply a couple times a year if your leaving outside in the elements. This all apples to unfinished wood

A thin, durable clear finish that delivers the beauty of a hand-rubbed finish with polyurethane protection.

  • Easy to apply - no drips or brush marks
  • Protects wood against water, household chemicals, food stains and wear
  • Provides a hand-rubbed look
  • Protects against water, household chemicals, food stains and wear
  • Made of a high quality oil-based polyurethane
  • Available in Gloss or Satin

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used on hardwood floor to make minor repairs
Answer: sorry I used it on bamboo sticks. it is more like a poly coat
Question: Can this be used over oil based paint
Answer: Yes, but it seems redundant. Most oil based paints would not need a polyurethane topcoat. But it would work. Beware the poly may add a yellowish cast to the paint due to its pale amber color, depending on the color of paint over which you apply it.
Question: What is the difference between the satin and the gloss and which is better for redoing a farmhouse dining set that will be stained a dark walnut
Answer: The gloss is almost always gonna give you a thicker coat. That means more protection for the wood. HOWEVER, I believe the satin finish is much “richer” .... and not as FLASHY as the gloss. With your dark walnut, I think it deserves the satin treatment.... but it’s easy to recommend ANYTHING when IT’S NOT MY TABLE!!! Regardless of what you choose, I hope you enjoy your your “new” furniture!
Question: Can i use a brush to apply it? i'm worried about lint from rags. the brush on poly says it is fast drying and i don't want it drying before i'm done
Answer: Wipe On Poly is designed to eliminate brush application. I use a small square of old tee shirt gathered around several cotton balls and tied with a twist tie. Wear a nitrile glove and hold the "daubber" in your had, dip it into a small qty. of the poly and proceed to wipe the surface. Watch the reflection on the surface as you apply the poly to ensure complete coverage. Allow to dry. Lightly sand with 320 grit and reapply. Repeat until you have the desired result.
Question: What's the difference between this and their other polycrylic "fast drying" - in the blue-green can
Answer: I think the blue can is water based. I buy the silver can in Clear Gloss and use it on 2 benches I have on my porch for over 10 years.
Question: Can this gloss polyurethane be used as a top coat for items painted with acrylic paint
Answer: YES—LIGHTLY SAND SURFACE BEFORE APPLICATION—400 —600 GRIT SANDPAPER
Question: Can you use this to repair a broken solar panel
Answer: I don't think so .This product is a clear protective coating for paint or stain on wood surfaces.
Question: Can this be us for an automotive clear top coat over a candy color enamel
Answer: I have used this product on motorcycle gas tank and plastics with great results. 6-8 coats works best, apply about 10-15 minutes after you spray your base coat and 10 minutes between coats with the polyurethane. You will get slight orange peel, just wet sand after several days and buff.

Howard Products

Product description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

User questions & answers

Question: what to use to clean wood first and then after the application of restor a finish
Answer: May have stirred it too vigorously which will produce air bubbles and a cloudy effect. There may also have been some moisture on top of the last coat -- I don't really know. However, use #000 or, best #0000 steel wool and "sand" the top to get rid of the problem, then recoat with a cheap "chippy" brush versus a foam brush (foam can create air bubbles). The cheap chippy brushes are those little brushes that sell for a $1 or so -- made in China should be somewhere on the handle. BTW, I always sand or burnish with #0000 steel wool between every coat and it gives it a nice silky smooth professional finish.
Question: Will it help with acetone stain
Answer: I used this product over black latex milk paint and haven't noticed any change in the black.
Question: Which color should I get if I have dark expresso color wood
Answer: 2-3 coats is recommended, depending what your project is. There are some great youtube videos on how to apply this product. It really is amazing. Best of luck to you.
Question: can you use it on floors
Answer: I stained my kitchen cabinets with the gel stain. I was lucky to have a lot of time to do the project because it doesrequire 24 hours between coats. I did use the gel top coat as it was recommended with the gel stain. For the stainI used foam brushes but the top coat went on better with socks for a even out look. User questions & answers

Question: Do I have to mix this in a ratio with some other compound (it says 32 to 12 in the title
Answer: Nothing. Only restor-a-finish.
Question: Will this protect an outdoor wood swing from sun and moisture? Thank you
Answer: Yes it would. You would need to sand it about 1” to 2” beyond the acetone mark (all around) with fine sandpaper instead of the steel wool recommended on the product instructions. Do it gently in circular even pressure moves. It will be a labor of love therefore, patience. Remove the dust created and clean the area very well. Apply the chosen color very lightly. Allow to really dry which will be more than 24hrs. Apply another gentle dab. Allow to dry. By now, you should be getting close to the color but repeat until satisfactory. All the best!
Question: can it be used for wood floors
Answer: Their Ebony Brown shade is ideal for modern Espresso finishes. I've used it to dramatic and fantastic effect. Great stuff!
Question: Is this product safe for food surfaces (e.g. is it what should be used on cutting boards
Answer: Just used the maple pine and left on a few mins. did section by section directions say wipe on and off and that is probably better as the floor is a bit darker HOWEVER. The floor was wretched with loss of finish in several places. It is now totally acceptable. After drying, used paste wax and then buffed. The floor is a save. We are selling the house and this saved refinishing

User questions & answers

Question: Is this only a quart or a gallon
Answer: No, but the first coat or two penetrate better if you mix in a little turpentine or d-limonine.
Question: Can this be used on a mahogany table that's beent reated with mineral butcher's block oil
Answer: Yes it will protect against rain, not sure about the sun. It's great stuff. Apply with half D-limonene, natural orange oil, it helps it soak in the wood. Coat it like 4 or 5 times. Keep doing coats until the wood stops absorbing it. For outdoors I would add a little more tung oil to the mixture each after each round of applying it. I usually pour it on, spread it around with the rubber gloves I'm wearing because everything else absorbs the oil and wastes it. Let is sit for like 20 mins, wipe off the excess, don't let it get tacky or it'll dry to a white film. If you keep rubbing it with cotton cloths each day for a few days it'll get a nice shine. If you don't keep rubbing it, it'll get more of a matte finish.
Question: I got IKEA butcher block counter top that's already sealed. Can this be used over the current seal
Answer: Yes! I highly recommend using this oil as it's one of the safest out there. This tung oil is used as a furniture treatment and a first time or after years of neglect or after sanding treatment. Not for a monthly or weekly treatment. Tung oil takes a long time to dry, and thats why it's so good for the wood.It needs to be used properly though. wipe it on, wipe it in, wipe it off, and let it dry! maybe 24 hrs or more, and wax afterward. It would be good for first time treatement. If you need a luster re-freash then I would use a lemon oil for furniture or something instead.Or just a wax product.all treatments will darken the wood. Teak doesn't need this type of treatment as it has it's own oil.
Question: is this $40 for a quart or a gallon
Answer: This is a hardening oil. For cutting boards, you want a non-hardening oil. Look at most the popular cutting board treatments and you will see they are just non-hardening mineral oil adulterated with scents, waxes and so on. That aside, if you insist on treating your cutting board like a piece of furniture, yes, once hardened, tung oil is considered food safe.

User questions & answers

Question: is this as durable as "acrylic
Answer: It's one quart and it is worth every penny. One quart covers 125 square feet. That's not one coat of 125 feet, that's 3 coats of 125 feet. One quart will FINISH 125 feet.
Question: Does this product yellow over time
Answer: I used it on butcher block that was treated several times with mineral oil it came out perfect..they advise to sand down the wood if it's pretreated. So I'd sand it, and use the waterlox. Ps.... the waterlox IMO works 10000 times better than the mineral oil..I should have started with it
Question: Is ir water proof
Answer: Its tung oil that works great for a wood counter top but i would not use it for a butcher block. Their are food grade mineral oils designed just for butcher blocks.
Question: I painted my table and want a clear protectant, so i can clean it from food spill and such. Will this work without messing up my paint job
Answer: Amazon site has this marked as $50 for a quart... which is nonsense price because you can pick it up for $29,99 at the local Woodcraft Supply or $31.49 from Rockler or $31.99 at Highland...etc, etc

User questions & answers

Question: Ive read that mineral oil conditioners can cause oil to be released onto papers left on the counters. Will this walnut oil cause the same thing
Answer: You Betcha!! I used this product on the interior of the kitchen cabinets I installed almost 15 years ago, and it's still serving us today. I heartily recommend it. It dries fast and lasts a long time.
Question: How many oz. do I need for finishing an about 20'' rolling pin and 24''x 30'' kneading board
Answer: I have used it over white latex painted cabinets and it turns yellow.
Question: I have a coffee table made of walnut. Will this help protect it from scratches or should I use a different product
Answer: When dry absolutely waterproof. If regular severe water use is necessary use minwax spar varnish.
Question: Will one bottle finish a 60" x 30" tabletop
Answer: Be sure to to read the instructions and use a good brush. I use it on woodworking projects and sand with 220 grit, lightly between coats. In my opinion the more the merrier. It is white in the can but dries absolutely clear. The white helps seeing where you have applied the clear.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this product be safely applied to a wooden bowl that will be eaten out of? Once the bowl is polished and dry, will it be safe to eat out of
Answer: Mine arrived in the summer in a similar "frozen" form. I didn't heat it in any way; but, yes, a serious "man"-shaking is required to get it into a more integrated, still-thick, but pour- or squeeze-able form. Its state is a good indicator that the product is in fact wax and oil, and not water-based.
Question: Will this get rid of beverage rings on an oak table
Answer: I recommend Howard Orange Oil. It cleans wood items fantastically well, and I prefer it to Murphy's Oil Soap. I have all three products and the Orange Oil cleans and shines so well that I don't bother with the Feed N Wax most times. If I could only have one product to use with wood furniture and antiques I would choose the Orange Oil, but both it and the Feed N Wax are excellent products. I completely rejuvenated a depression era walnut buffet server, an old floor standing radio and a dried out and filthy butcher block style maple work bench with Orange Oil. It cleans better than Murphy's Oil Soap (or any other product I have ever used) and is absorbed by dry wood better than the Feed N Wax. It works wonders on old tool handles as well, such has hammers, axes, and shovels. And as a bonus, it cleans rust off the tools really well too.
Question: Is this supposed to be a thick wax or a liquid product? Mine arrived and I'm wondering if it got frozen. It's thick
Answer: Would be more than enough, I use the 1000 watt version to run my 4 6x8's.
Question: what should I clean wood furniture with first
Answer: This amp is almost 150 w rms. It is poor in power. I sold mine. In less money than the amount that I pay. Becouse it is poor.
