14 best antibiotic ointments
Antibiotic ointments are topical medications containing antibiotics that are applied directly to the skin to prevent or treat bacterial infections. They are commonly used in first aid and wound care. Here's some information about antibiotic ointments:
Active Ingredients:
- Common antibiotics found in these ointments include neomycin, polymyxin B, and bacitracin. Some formulations may combine multiple antibiotics for broader spectrum coverage.
Mechanism of Action:
- Antibiotic ointments work by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria. They do not have any effect on viral or fungal infections.
Application:
- They are applied topically to clean, dry skin. It's important to follow the specific instructions provided on the product packaging or by a healthcare professional.
Wound Care:
- They are commonly used on minor cuts, scrapes, and burns to prevent infection and promote healing.
Frequency of Use:
- The frequency of application can vary depending on the specific ointment and the severity of the wound. In most cases, it's recommended to apply the ointment one to three times a day.
Duration of Use:
- It's important to use the ointment for the full duration recommended by the healthcare provider, even if the wound appears to be healing well.
Allergies and Sensitivities:
- Some individuals may be allergic or sensitive to certain antibiotics. If any signs of an allergic reaction, such as itching, redness, or swelling, occur, it's important to stop using the ointment and seek medical attention.
Consultation with a Healthcare Professional:
- If a wound is deep, has jagged edges, or is from a bite, it may require medical attention beyond the use of an antibiotic ointment.A healthcare professional should be consulted in such cases.
Precautions:
- Avoid using antibiotic ointments near the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose unless directed by a healthcare provider.
Storage:
- Store antibiotic ointments in a cool, dry place, and keep them out of the reach of children.
Use in Children and Pregnant Women:
- It's important to consult a healthcare professional before using antibiotic ointments on infants, young children, or pregnant women.
Remember, while antibiotic ointments are effective for preventing and treating bacterial infections in minor wounds, they should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment for more serious injuries or infections. Always seek medical attention if there are concerns about a wound.

User questions & answers
Question: | expiration date, made in |
Answer: | EXP: 03/2022 |
Question: | does it help heal bed sores |
Answer: | Yes this is great stuff for bed sores. Depending on how big the sites are you may also need butterfly stitches. I had a sore that wouldn’t close as Neosporin kept infection at bay. 2 stitches places over sore while using Neosporin healed the wound in 2 days. |
Question: | What year did this come out |
Answer: | As a general, total item, Neomycin was discovered in 1949. As a tube of Neosporin, the EXPIRATION date is imprinted on the Bottom of the tube. The manufacture date is irrelevant as it is assumed you are buying a 'new' product, and should be rotating your personal stock / supply. The tube I purchased expires March 2022. |
Question: | Hello!!! Is there a significant difference between this and the one that is just pain relief |
Answer: | There is neosporin ointment which is very greasy but good. There is neosporin white crème which is very good. About the pain relief it depends how sore "your sore is". Sometimes it does the job for pain. Overall, neosporin ointment whether crème or greasy is very good stuff. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this neosporin cream be used as an underarm deodorant ? thank you |
Answer: | This is only my opinion, but you "can," do so. However, "should you," no. Way to expensive, and would only impact "bacterial organisms," susceptible to the ingredients of this cream. A good deodorant I have used to good effect that is all natural, and non-staining is Thai deodorant stone, Deodorant Stones of America: Thai Crystal Deodorant. There is also spray or roll-on. The Stone lasts for months of use, available here on Amazon. |
Question: | Is this the white cream kind |
Answer: | yes it is white |
Question: | Can be use on my armpits |
Answer: | Yes, just so long that you're not allergic to it. |
Question: | Is this a cream or ointment |
Answer: | It is a white cream not like ointment at all. I have ordered this before and like the cream as it rubs in nicely and it’s not as messy as ointment. It says cream right on the box. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long does the pain relief last |
Answer: | I wouldn't say hours on end but at least a couple of hours. Pain relief the instant you put it on, I hope that this info helps! |
Question: | Can i use this for acne |
Answer: | I have used the neo cream off and on for years as a moisturizer. I first used it to help get rid of acne and now use it for my Lupus and excema rashes. The best thing I have ever found and I have used expensive to cheap. I have tried cureolgy as my latest disaster and it broke me out. The neo cleared up the total all over itchy face in 2 days. I think cureolgy works but not for me and my combo skin plus health issues (that are in a super calmed down state). I mix the neo in with a tiny bit of Simple Water Boost Hydrating Gel and it last 12+hrs. I got to test that out this past weekend when my husband was in a car accident and my face held up during a lot of very tense moments! I will post a full bare faced pic (with only neo I mean) for the reviews to show how good it works. Good Luck! |
Question: | what is the difference between the cream version and the 24hr version |
Answer: | I was unaware of a "24 hour" version, but think I'll try it next time and see if it heals faster. However, I've been VERY happy with the regular ointment and use it on everything from minor cuts scrapes and burn to serious wounds. It's never failed me or my family or our livestock. |
Question: | Does neosporin first aid antibiotic ointment also minimize the appearance of scars or do i need to use the original ointment |
Answer: | You still need to use the original ointment to minimize scars. |

Answer: | It is plastic. If you need a large amount for now or a long period of time, Amazon has a large jar that is a better deal. |
Question: | Has anyone used this on there mastectomy scars or does any one know know something good for a double mastectomy scars |
Answer: | I had open heart surgery a number of years ago and used liquid vitamin E on the scars twice a day for a couple of months. Very minimal scarring left after that. |
Question: | Can I apply this on my scalp? would it damage my hair |
Answer: | It might make your hair a bit greasy, but you could wash it off. As long as you apply it topically (skin only) and don't eat it, it won't hurt you. HOWEVER, it might not help, either. It depends on whether your problem is a wound or infection, and whether or not the ingredients in this would be effective against the microbes in question. If you are really concerned about whatever this is, see a doctor. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Made in China, If I would have known that I wouldn't have bought it. The manufacturing origin should be listed in the description. |
