13 best menstrual cup instructions

Menstrual cups are feminine hygiene products that are reusable and environmentally friendly. Proper usage and care are essential for their effectiveness and hygiene. Here are general instructions for using menstrual cups:

  1. Before First Use:

    • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the menstrual cup.
    • Sterilize the cup by boiling it in water for a few minutes before the first use.
  2. Insertion:

    • Find a comfortable position, such as sitting or squatting, to ease the insertion process.
    • Fold the menstrual cup using a fold that you find most comfortable (common folds include the C-fold, punch-down fold, or 7-fold).
    • Insert the folded cup into the vagina, ensuring it opens fully and forms a seal.
  3. Proper Placement:

    • The cup should sit low in the vaginal canal, below the cervix.
    • Rotate or adjust the cup to ensure it is fully open and forms a seal against the vaginal walls.
  4. Wearing Time:

    • Menstrual cups can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on the flow. However, it's recommended to empty and clean the cup at least twice a day.
  5. Removal:

    • Wash your hands before removing the cup.
    • Relax your pelvic muscles.
    • Pinch the base of the cup to release the suction seal.
    • Gently pull the cup out, keeping it upright to avoid spillage.
    • Empty the contents into the toilet.
  6. Cleaning:

    • Rinse the cup with cold water first to prevent setting any stains.
    • Wash the cup with mild, unscented, and water-based soap. Avoid using harsh cleansers.
    • Sterilize the cup between cycles by boiling it for a few minutes.
  7. Storage:

    • Store the menstrual cup in a breathable container or cloth bag between periods.
    • Avoid storing it in an airtight container.
  8. Maintenance:

    • Regularly check the cup for any signs of wear or damage, such as cracks or tears.
    • Replace the cup according to the manufacturer's recommendations, usually every 1-5 years.
  9. Leakage:

    • If the cup is inserted correctly but leaks, it might be full, not fully opened, or not positioned correctly. Adjust and try again.
  10. Comfort and Awareness:

    • It may take a few cycles to become comfortable with using a menstrual cup.Pay attention to the cup's placement and your comfort.

Remember that individual experiences may vary, and it's crucial to follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of your menstrual cup. Always prioritize hygiene and cleanliness to prevent any potential issues. If you encounter persistent discomfort or issues, consult with a healthcare professional or the cup's manufacturer for guidance.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone used this while swimming? Does it stay put in the water
Answer: Yes! I live on an island and go to the beach every other weekend. No issues with the Diva cup whatsoever while swimming in the ocean.
Question: This is stupid, but what is the possibility of it it getting stuck
Answer: I know this is an old question, but maybe it will help other people who are having issues and looking for tips on getting the cup out (like I did). If you can't grip the cup, or are having trouble reaching it, squat down all the way - so that your butt is touching your heels. This will help push it out a bit, and make it more horizontal so you can pull it out easier. Once you have it pulled out a little bit from the stem, you should be able to grasp the body of the cup easier in this position to squeeze it and break the seal. Once you've done that, you can stand up to remove it the rest of the way. Hope this will help someone else!
Question: Serious question: has anyone ever had trouble getting the Divacup out upon removal? Really want to try the diva cup but terrified of this happening
Answer: No need to worry. I was worried too, but it is easy. So, there are muscles down there, they are used for pushing out babies and they are the same muscles used for kegel exercises. When it is time to take out the cup, you push, like a kegel exercise or like you'd imagine it would be to push out a baby, then pinch it just above the stem and pull, breaking the seal. The first time I did this because the diva cup went high up there, now this is routinely how I remove the diva cup because it is really easy.
Question: Hi; I've never had a child, and prefer 'slim' tampons, but I am 30, and I've got a fairly big build (tall, broad-hipped). Which size should I go for
Answer: As others have said, if you have never given birth vaginally start out with size 1 regardless of age. I tried the size 2 first since I’m over 30 and it didn’t work well. It was too big which prevented it from forming a proper seal and caused leaking and discomfort. Not a cute look. I switched to size 1 and found that it works perfectly! I’m so happy that I’m no longer dependent on tampons! But seriously, the age recommendation is silly. 30 isn’t the magical age where a woman’s birth canal suddenly looses all elasticity. If you read through the answers here it’s pretty clear that most of the 30+ women w/o children had better luck with the size 1.

User questions & answers

Question: Item says Diva Cup #2 Post Child Birth. Two sizes are listed but both show pictures of size 2 can someone explain this
Answer: I ordered the size 1 on this particular item and got the size 2 like pictured. (Which is what I hoped would happen.) It says size 1 but it means size 2 - 1 pack. I ordered it even though I was worried about getting a size 1 but I got a size 2.
Question: Curious about the feeling of the stem rubbing on clothing or my insides, any issues with this
Answer: I am on my first cycle with a MC and the stem is driving me insane. I cut a little off and then a hour later cut a little more and it's still driving me crazy. I'm gonna try inside out or cutting off the entire stem.
Question: How do you know it's full or time to change
Answer: I've used this cup for almost 3 years now... I know when I can feel the cup slide down, it's time to change...I also know that every 1 1/2 to 2 hours on my heavy days (day 4/5) I have to dump and clean. I keep watch on the clock... and this is gonna sound weird, but when I dump, I say the time out loud and normally I take a nap or doze off (my body is nuts when it's heavy days) and my husband will say "babe- the 2 hours is up!" And I get up. It's nice to have a helper lol
Question: This is a horrible question but, what about large clots? I am at that stage where my period is full of big clots. Can this handle those
Answer: I am a newbie... the first day of my period went perfect, but on the second, I discovered the hard way that my flow is too heavy to wait 10-12 hours to empty the cup. I am using the #2 cup. I think I have to empty it three or four times a day... still working on it.

User questions & answers

Question: does the size only matter in terms of flow or if you are over 30 will a small fall out and a large is needed
Answer: Even though age could play a role when selecting your cup, at LENA we believe that there are a couple of more important factors. Due to LENA cups' ergonomic design, most women can successfully use either size but choose one over the other depending on their flow, cervix height (can your vagina support the length of LENA Large,) and general physique. If you your flow is light to normal we generally recommend LENA Small, regardless of age. Our small cup is also great for women with lower cervixes and teenagers due to its compact size, gentler rim and high collection capacity. We recommend LENA Large for women of all age with normal to heavy flow. Our large cup is very comfortable and also has a soft rim which offers an easy and pain-free insertion. If you are over 30 but have a light flow, you can successfully use LENA Small.
Question: Do you feel the cup while wearing it
Answer: As I have post on another question... On my very first try of this product (and very first time EVER using a cup excluding the nightmare softcup trial) I danced with my toddler, went to physical therapy (movement like yoga) went swimming afterward. I made sure to dive, flip under the water and even walked on my hands in the pool my legs straight up in the air and I did this vigorously and repeatedly just to test the Lena cup! Then I took a nap on the sofa. Later after 8 hrs of total use I removed the cup. There was no leak and no mess with removal. plus it was only about half full. So I cleansed it reinserted it using the 7 fold and slept in it. I am a very uneasy sleeper. meaning I turn all over the place. I turn constantly from my back to either one of my sides and I almost always turn onto my stomach a least twice a night... This said I never felt it and Im wearing now and I dont even notice it. And I have a low cervix so its not too high up in me either. Its makes you feel natural as if you arent even on your period.I have to add this is my 2nd day trying this product I have never used a cup besides one day trial of instead softcups (that you can feel and the overall experience was a nightmare) With Lena I only felt it once when I first was trying to figure out how to insert it. It took me about ten times of removing and inserting to feel I definitely had a feel for what to do but looking back I honestly think I had it right by the 2nd or 3rd time. Self doubting myself was what made me keeping trying by the 8th try I put it too far up for my body and that was the only time I "felt" it. I wasnt painful but just a little uncomfortable with a slight bit of uneasy pressure. But it was a good thing it made me feel uneasy. It actually boosted my confidence that I had been doing it correctly that whole time before. That one time of doing it wrong was what I needed to let me know for sure how it needs to be done correctly and what not to do. I realize there was no need to shove it as far as I could up inside me lol. Then I practiced a 9th time and on the 10th I was more than confident I had it right.
Question: How would I know which size cup to buy
Answer: Most women can wear either LENA cup and choose one size over the other primarily based on their blood flow amount, cervix height and general physique. Age and birthing history could play a role as well.Generally, women with light / normal flow choose LENA Small and women with normal / heavy flow choose LENA Large. We recommend first-time cup users to start with LENA Small. Our small cup is also ideal for young women and teenagers. LENA Small works great for women with low / medium cervix height, while women with high cervix can wear either size LENA cups.
Question: Is there a reason the holes are angled or is it just aesthetics
Answer: To add to what others have said, for some reason the angled holes are so much easier to clean than straight holes.

User questions & answers

Question: I've used divacup in the past and found it to be too large and uncomfortable. what is the diameter of this cup? is it good for a high cervix
Answer: The LENA Small measures 41mm (1.6 inches) in diameter, while the LENA Large measures 45mm (1.8 inches) in diameter. LENA's unique bell shape works very well for people of all body types and cervix heights. We also offer the LENA Sensitive line of cups for those with sensitive anatomies.
Question: How do i know what size to get
Answer: The poster Laura Funk is incorrect; LENA states on their website: "Unlike other brands, at LENA we do not believe that age and birthing history play a significant role in choosing a menstrual cup. Mothers with multiple births are happily using LENA Small while teenagers, with a heavy flow, choose LENA Large. Most people can wear either size LENA Cup but choose one over the other primarily based on flow amount, cervix height and general physique." I have had a child and use the small cup with no issues.
Question: Do you ever need to sanitize the cup? Diva Cup, for example, suggests that you boil the cup to completely sanitize it
Answer: We recommend boiling your cup for five minutes to sanitize it before use and between cycles, if you wish.
Question: What is the difference between the Lena Sensitive small cup and a regular small cup
Answer: LENA Sensitive are the same shape, size and design as the Classic LENA Cups, but are made from a slightly softer silicone for those with sensitive anatomies.

User questions & answers

Question: The directions say the button on the steamer can only be used "once per cycle." Is this referring to a monthly menstrual cycle
Answer: No, we are so sorry for that confusion. The button can only be pushed once per steaming session (or steam cycle). It is a one-way button and cannot be re-pushed until the machine has had time to complete the session and cool down. You can use the steamer to sanitize your cup as many times as you need throughout your "menstrual cycle."
Question: Is this going to be restocked soon
Answer: Yes, they should be back in stock in about a week!
Question: How do I clean the steamer? I always wash my cup before use but for some reason my steamer has a residue in the "hot plate" area
Answer: It sounds like you may have minerals in the water you are using. We recommend using purified or distilled water in the steamer as the minerals have been removed and it shouldn't leave a residue behind. However, any all-natural mineral cleaner should be able to remove the residue. Make sure to not use anything harmful to clean the steamer and run it for a full cycle before using it with your cup again.
Question: Can I use this to clean any kind of cup or only a Pixie cup
Answer: You can use it to clean and sterilize any menstrual cup!

Product features

Easy, trustworthy, clean, and QUICK! Love it!”

“After getting hooked on using PIxie Cup, cleaning became a big concern for me. The wipes that came with the cup were great, but I read online that boiling the cup is a great way to clean it. But honestly, actually boiling it kind of scared me because I didn’t want to let it touch the bottom of the pot and possibly melt. (Plus I wanted a dedicated little pot used ONLY for cleaning my cup.) This steam sterilizer makes cleaning my Pixie Cup an absolute breeze! You just put a little water in it, put your cup in stem up, attach the lid and plug it in and the process is over in no time. Directions say to fill it to the 5 ml line but the line is a little hard to see and doesn’t say “5ml” on it. The line is down there though and it’s a very small amount of water needed. It honestly cannot get any easier to clean my cup now and I absolutely love these products!

Also, I trust steam sterilizing more than I trust boiling my cup. I work in the OR and we steam sterilize the instruments used in surgery so I know for a fact that steam sterilizing is an AMAZING way to clean things. I highly, highly suggest this steam sterilizer. Trust me, it will make your time of the month that much more simple... :) “ -Savanah, Actual Pixie Cup Customer

Compact and Lightweight

Our steamer will easily fit on your bathroom counter, in your cabinet, or even in a drawer for easy storage.

Quick and easy

Sterilizing your cup before and after your period will be a breeze with this steamer, say goodbye to boiling! Just 3 minutes later and you’ll be left with a clean, sterilized cup without the hassle of boiling.

Kills 99.9% of bacteria and germs in 3 minutes

Sterilize your cup with 5ml of purified water, no need for nasty chemicals. Just add water, place your cup, press the button, and you’re good to go. Sterilizing your menstrual cup could not be any simpler!

Clean with one click of a button.”

“I always wanted to try a menstrual cup but the one thing that always stopped me from pulling the trigger was the sterilization process. I absolutely hated the idea of using a pot that is also used for food, and having to boil it in the kitchen at which point any member of the family can walk in and find you “cooking” a very personal item. So when I discovered that a menstrual cup steamer existed I knew it was finally time for me to get a cup.

I love how compact this item is, fits on the ledge of my bathroom sink with room to spare! The instructions it came with were very easy to follow, as soon as I plugged it in and poured in the water it started to heat up. At first I was worried because I clicked the button and the light wasn’t turning on, it took me a few minutes to realize I didn’t use enough force to push the button in all the way, now I know for next time. Afterward, I sterilized both my cups with no issues.

Also I have to mention that they include a cloth (almost like the type of cloth you would use to clean your glasses) and I wasn’t sure if you would really need it, but wow I was so happy they included it! The steam gets the cup full of water drops so it’s nice that after it is done steaming you can wipe your cup off immediately and that you don’t have to reach for your bathroom towel that everyone uses to wipe off their hands.

I noticed if you add more than (the) 5 ml of water it instructs you to do then the steamer takes a bit longer (like 2 minutes more) then the 3 minutes it’s supposed to. So follow the measurements on the steamer’s lid and you will be fine. It’s still faster (and cleaner) then it would be to boil your cup.

Overall great product, convenient, and easy. Everyone with a cup needs this in their lives!!!” -Alexis Laing, Actual Pixie Cup Customer

User questions & answers

Question: When will you be able to sell to mexico? we have very little options there. where can i find these in my country? do you know other sellers
Answer: We are only able to wholesale within the US right now so sadly no stores/sellers in Mexico yet. We are working to be able to sale internationally, but sadly this takes time. Thanks for your interest in our cups!
Question: how to choose the size
Answer: Many use both cups, the regular on their heavier days, and the small on their lighter days so we offer a two-pack that has both sizes. If looking to purchase a single cup there are many factors that may help you decide: Small Saalt Cup - 2-3 tampon capacity - light flow - low cervix - beginner cup user - 25 mL Regular Saalt Cup - 3-4 tampon capacity - heavy flow - high cervix - cup users - 30 mL
Question: I'm over 30 but only had a C-section not a vaginal birth, I tend to have lighter periods. What recommendation do you have for sizing
Answer: You will likely be able to comfortably use either Saalt cup size with the right tips. Many use the small for light to normal days and the regular for heavier flow days. This is why we also sell our cups as a 2-pack. Sizing is not an exact science as we all have unique anatomies, but there are more factors than just childbirth (C-section or not) and age. For example, if you have a low cervix and/or strong pelvic and vaginal muscles the small may work best for you. Likewise, if you have a high cervix and/or very heavy flows the regular may work best for you. These are just the opposite ends of the spectrum as again many can use both sizes. Buy in confidence knowing if after 2-3 cycles you aren’t happy with your cup we will refund your total. You may always contact us for help and questions as well. Thanks!
Question: I bought a regular size cup from saalt it has good seal but still leak, and I have issue with weak urine stream when using this. help please
Answer: When your cup is inserted correctly, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort or leaking. First check the position. Saalt Cup sits lower in the vagina than a tampon. If it is too high or too close to the cervix, it can leak or cause discomfort. The current positioning you're using may be applying pressure to your urethra causing the weak urine stream and be contributing to the leaking. Insert the cup at an angle to match the natural slant of your vaginal canal. For many women this will be horizontally towards your tailbone vs straight up. Leaking can also be caused by a poor suction seal. Make sure the four air holes are not clogged and that the cup has fully opened. Swirl a finger around the base of the cup to check for any folds or indentations. Pinch the base of the cup and rotate it to make sure it is opened completely. If leaking persists let us know and we'll offer additional tips. Most importantly keep trying small adjustments, everyone is different.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this product Latex-free? I'm very allergic to latex
Answer: I have ridiculously heavy periods with lots of clotting. I used to use 2 super plus tampons at a time, plus a pad, and would bleed through in an hour. The cup works great for me. I often add a pad as backup on my heaviest days, but still, the cup holds more than 2 super plus tampons. On my heaviest days, I can wear a Softcup about 2 - 2 1/2 hours before leaking. Twice as long (or more) than tampons.
Question: Can this push on your bladder? It seemed much more comfortable after going to the bathroom
Answer: There are 6 individual female condoms
Question: safe plastic
Answer: The box says made of nitrile (not of natural latex rubber)
Question: I have really heavy periods with lots of clotting. Wondering if this would work for me
Answer: Each box has 3 individually wrapped but scroll to description area and it willbtellbyou how much is shipping depending on seller.. if it says 6 count its 2 boxes coming...etc

User questions & answers

Question: I purchased the mini soft and it came today. I should have followed your recommendation of a medium. How do I go about exchanging it
Answer: I know that as soon as I messaged the seller they were more than happy to send me out a replacement in the correct size without requiring an exchange (I think for sanitary reasons) they really want you to be satisfied with their product and now im much happier with my Medium cup and I have a small for light days but really I mostly just use my medium I think it creates a better seal for my body☺️
Question: How wide is the cup
Answer: Thank you for your question! We measured the finished product. We try our best not to squeeze the material while measuring and did measure 40mm to 41mm. We will forward the request to re-measure and update the images if needed, as we try to be as accurate as possible:) Every millimeter counts; hence thank you for measuring the cup as well Terry.
Question: How soft is the soft when compared to a Lunette model
Answer: I didn't find this cup to be that soft. I was comparing it to the Intimina Lily cup original. I found I'm not a cup person though they all seemed uncomfortable to me. I had much better luck with the Nixit Disk NOW that is soft and so comfortable you don't even feel it.
Question: Is this smaller than the small lena cup
Answer: Yes

User questions & answers

Question: Is this more difficult to clean with the no-spill inner ring? It looks like it would be harder to empty and clean compared to other brands
Answer: It is actually a very good design that when folded in keeps from leaking and folds out to a smooth conical shape easy to clean and flexible and also helps you not to spill /splash as you poor out from it. It is thin, flexible, smooth (non-porous) and transparent, so rinsing it clean and more thorough cleaning is quite easy.
Question: Where is this product being shipped from
Answer: The product is manufactured, packaged and shipped from California.
Question: What makes this specialized for teens? Is it smaller
Answer: It's smaller. Note, I am NOT a teen. I'm an extremely petite adult that hasn't had any children, and the teen size was the only one that fit me. The regular and low cervix were way too wide.
Question: I have been a pad only user my whole menstruating life, I am considereing a cup but what type should I get
Answer: Ive tried 4 cups and femmycycle was the one that worked flawlessly for me. I tried Diva, Ladycup, Sckoon before finding femmycycle. You have to be willing to read the menstrual cup blogs, learn your body and possibly try a few before you find the best fit. Once you do, your life will change. Periods just are a non issue now for me. No leaks, no pads, no smell, I can swim, ride my bike, hot tub and even go pantyless with my cup- its extraordinary! Good luck

SAFE PATENTED DESIGN

Ditch the old-school feminine products made from single-use plastic and filled with chemicals! FemmyCycle is reusable for multiple years and easy to clean. Made from 100% soft medical grade silicone. BPA-free, with no harsh chemicals or toxins, cruelty-free.

Perfect for Teens

Yes, teens can use menstrual cups! The FemmyCycle Petite cup is 10% smaller than the Regular size making it the perfect size for teens. The FemmyCycle Petite is great for sports and other activities and can also be worn overnight.

Whether you just got your period or you've been menstruating for years, the FemmyCycle Petite is great for first-time menstrual cup users due to its size and design.

Great for First Time Cup Users

With a "fold, insert, and go" design, the FemmyCycle doesn't require any twisting or popping open to get proper placement. In fact, it's made to remain folded when inserted and still work! Plus, the removal ring makes it easy to get out and comfortable to wear.

Better for You, Better for the Community

Disposable menstrual products account for thousands of pounds of waste each year. Save your community and save money with the reusable FemmyCycle!

How To Choose Your Size

Measure during your period to get the most accurate measurement since the cervix will be at its lowest point at this time in your cycle. Using the wrong size can lead to leaking or discomfort.

To locate your cervix: Squat or stand with one leg elevated and insert your index finger into your vagina as far as you can. The cervix will feel like the tip of your nose and the rest of the vagina will feel more like the inside of your cheek.
