13 best eye lubricants
Eye lubricants, also known as artificial tears or lubricating eye drops, are products used to relieve dryness, discomfort, and irritation in the eyes. They play a crucial role in maintaining eye health and can be purchased over-the-counter or prescribed by a healthcare professional. Here's what you should know about eye lubricants:
Purpose: Eye lubricants are primarily designed to supplement the natural tear film that covers the surface of the eye. They provide moisture and help keep the eye's surface smooth and comfortable.
Dry Eye Syndrome: Eye lubricants are commonly used to alleviate the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eye doesn't produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. This can result in itching, burning, redness, and a feeling of grittiness in the eyes.
Types: There are various types of eye lubricants available, including:
Artificial Tears: These are the most common and provide temporary relief from dryness and irritation. They come in both preserved and preservative-free formulations.
Gel Eye Drops: Gel-based lubricants are thicker and provide longer-lasting relief. They are often recommended for more severe cases of dry eyes, and they may temporarily blur vision.
Ointments: Eye ointments are the thickest and longest-lasting option. They are usually applied at night before sleep due to their blurry consistency.
Preservative-Free Options: For individuals with sensitive eyes or those who need to use lubricating eye drops frequently, preservative-free artificial tears are available to minimize the risk of irritation.
Allergies: Some lubricating eye drops are formulated to provide relief from eye allergies. These may contain antihistamines to reduce itching and redness caused by allergens.
Contact Lens Compatibility: Certain lubricating eye drops are designed to be compatible with contact lenses. If you wear contacts and experience dryness, look for drops specifically labeled for this purpose.
Application: When using eye lubricants, it's important to follow the instructions on the packaging or the guidance provided by your eye care professional. Generally, you'll apply a drop or two into each eye as needed.
Consultation: If you have persistent or severe dry eye symptoms, it's advisable to consult an eye care specialist. They can diagnose the underlying cause of your dry eyes and recommend the most appropriate treatment, which may include prescription-strength lubricants or other therapies.
Storage: Eye lubricants should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions.Typically, they should be kept at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
Safety Precautions: Avoid touching the tip of the eye drop bottle to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. If you experience any adverse reactions or changes in vision after using lubricating eye drops, seek medical attention.
Eye lubricants are a valuable tool in managing dry eye symptoms and maintaining eye comfort and health. However, their effectiveness can vary depending on the individual and the underlying cause of dryness, so it's essential to use them as directed and consult a healthcare professional for a tailored treatment plan if needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it relieve visual fatigue after studying on computer |
Answer: | Staring at a computer often means we don't blink enough. This can lead to eye fatigue and irritation, so I would say, "Yes." I, too, use the drops for this reason. |
Question: | shelf life for thera tears |
Answer: | I ordered my bottle of Thera Tears on 1/31/14. The expiration date on the bottle is 11/2015. So it looks like the shelf life is close to 2 years. |
Question: | Can I use this while wearing contact lenses |
Answer: | Hi Yi W., that’s a great question! We recommend trying our “TheraTears® Contact Lens Comfort Drops”, which are FDA approved for use with daily wear and extended wear soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses. |
Question: | Looks like they changed the formula when they recently changed the packaging...Is this still preservative free? I can't find where it says that on box |
Answer: | This whole "preservative free" business is very strange. I have been purchasing the "old" packaging for several years now and purchased it specifically because it was PRESERVATIVE FREE as recommended by my Ophthalmologist. Now the new packaging doesn't say Preservative Free on he front of the package but if you take time to look all over the outer box it says that it is PRESERVATIVE FREE IN THE EYE. What does THAT mean. So I called the number on the package and was told by the person who answered the phone that it is the same formula but it can't be preservative free in the bottle because you are always taking the lid on and off the bottle. So it is preservative free as it hits the eye. Figure that out. I can't. The "old" bottle which is what they say is the same formula doesn't say anything about not being preservative free as it hits the eye. So I went to the website where it says, "NOW you can get preservative free in a bottle." WHAT? I thought it was the same formula. Was it not preservative free before, but just said so on the package? What they are claiming now is that the only TRUE Preservative Free eye drops are in the individual vials which of course you can purchase. I used to buy those before they changed the vials so that now you cannot put the top back on if you don't use the entire amount. I don't know what everyone else thinks, but this whole thing sounds very "fishy" to me. I haven't opened the new box I just received from Amazon and don't think I will do that until I get an answer from my Ophthalmologist to see if she can shed any light on this situation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can they be used during the day, to drive, will they blur vision |
Answer: | They do blur my vision for a few (2-3 ) minutes. I usually relax with my head tilted back to really get the benefit from the drop because the drop relieves the burning immediately to my irritated dry eye. |
Question: | Do these eyedrops have flaxseed oil |
Answer: | Yes, but as the fifth Inactive Ingredients. Active Ingredients, eye lubricants, are carboxymethylcellulous sodium, glycerin and polysorbate. BF has severely dry eyes and so far Retaine MGD has proven to be her go to drops. Nano Tears work but are only single use. |
Question: | are they preservative free |
Answer: | Yes they are preservative free, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. The manufacturer says you should only open a vial, use 1-2 drops per eye and then DISCARD the vial and all remaining lubricant. The reason is that because there is no preservative, any bacteria that gets into the opened vial will multiply like crazy and within a short period of time could become enough bacteria to create an eye infection after repeated use of a vial. These drops are far better than most others on the OTC market, but they are very expensive, especially if you need to use more than one vial a day for blepharitis, etc. At $24 a box (retail price) you are purchasing just 1/5 of an ounce (!) of lubricant in 30 delivery vials — that would be a bit more than a teaspoonful of lubricant total. |
Question: | It lists ingredients carboxymethylcellulose sodium, glycerine, polysorbate 80. why is flax oil not listed |
Answer: | Flaxseed oil is considered an inactive ingredient in the US so is listed elsewhere on the carton. In the US, some eyedrop ingredients are considered as "active" based on FDA Monograph rules. Many useful and protective ingredients are included in eyedrops, but those not classified as "active" will be listed separately on the carton. |

Refresh Optive Mega-3
When our natural tears evaporate, our eyes get dry, itchy, irritated, and uncomfortable. Refresh Optive Mega-3 prevents tear evaporation and is clinically proven to treat the signs and symptoms of Dry Eye often caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
MGD is a common eye condition that occurs when the tiny glands in our eyelids become blocked and cannot secrete enough oil to our eye’s tear film. This causes our natural tears to evaporate and results in the painful symptoms of Dry Eye.
Refresh Optive Mega-3 is one of the artificial tear with a unique blend of flaxseed and castor oils. This preservative-free, low-blur formula helps keep tears intact, nourishing all three tear film layers for long-lasting symptom relief.

Question: | can i use it with eye contacts on |
Answer: | No where on the box does it ever mention 'contacts' - it says good to use if you've had Lasix. However, the box says you can call 1-800-433-8871 (Refresh brand) for any Questions or Comments. |
Question: | Is this safe and effective with Intraoccular lens |
Answer: | Love these eye drops! I had tried everything b4 I found these. - I do not wear lens of any sort. I would ask the Pharmacist. |
Question: | Can you use these on top of contacts lens |
Answer: | I wear scleral lenses and put 2 drops of this inside the bowl of the lens and then add saline per my Dr. Helps with fogging and comfort. Don't know about soft contacts but these def won't hurt the has permeable type. |
Question: | After the tip of the individual drop container has been removed, can it be replaced? Does it pop back on |
Answer: | They don't want you to do that because the solution is sterile, then not after you use it once. On the other hand, I manage to get 4-5 drops out of each container over the period of a day. Just push the tip back on, rotating slightly. Keep it upright, as it will leak if horizontal or upside down. After several months, no problems at all, and lots of money saved. |

Answer: | ID Velvet is definitely better than glide as velvet is silicon it lasts longer & feels more luxurious and doesn't dry out. |
Question: | Is this product equal to refresh plus |
Answer: | ID Velvet will not harm you and does not need to be removed unless you prefer to do so. Ordinary soap and water works best for most cleanup. Silicones tend to more stubborn to remove from fabrics such as sheets. We've found Oxiclean works well! |
Question: | Is this 2 Bottles for the price above |
Answer: | This is a 100% silicone based lubricant designed for use between skin contact. More for sexual toys and experience's. I have no clue if it would work to lube a treadmill belt. |

Question: | What is the expiration Date |
Answer: | Mineral Oil = 42.5 and White Petroleum Jelly = 56.8% |
Question: | Can these be used with contact lenses |
Answer: | There is one Tube of Ointment that is 0.12 oz (3.5 g) in size |
Question: | Does it have preservatives |
Answer: | This is more of an ointment. I did find it somewhat difficult to apply. One must pull the lower eyelid down and squeeze a tiny bit out of the tube and run it along the inside of one's wet eyelid. Sometimes it stays and sometimes it doesn't go on. Also without eyeglasses it can prove to be hard to see to apply the ointment. However, if everything has gone according to plan it does stay through the night. In the morning, if one has dry eyes, the ointment allows one to open one's eyelids without the lid scraping over a dry eye. My alternative to the ointment is to just carry a bottle of Refresh tears in my tee shirt pocket, apply a drop onto each eyelid, open my eyelid slowly and allow the Tears to lubricate the eye. One must always remember do not open the eyelid before applying Tears. |
