User questions & answers

Question: are they idividual packets or cubes
Answer: There are 2 packets you combine for one bowl of soup - one you squeeze out the miso paste and then another with the dried ingredients (seaweed, tofu, fried tofu, or green onion).
Question: How many carbs per serving
Answer: I went into Google Translator; "carbohydrates" is "Tansuikabutsu". Japanese is read from right to left, so the first three symbols (parts of letters) remind me of: a brush, a telephone pole and a backwards letter "J". Looking for those images on the label, I find it in a different font, but still recognizable as the word 'carbs' in Japanese. It is the third listing from the bottom in the nutritional box (has yellow below it; the other is obviously a list of ingredients). Checking quickly, the label shows us that all the entrees contain either 4.7, 4.8, or 5 grams of carbs per 18 grams of food.
Question: What flavors are identified by the color of the package (green, blue, orange, red) since I don't read Japanese
Answer: Despite what the flavor packets say, please note there is green onion, tofu on some sort, seaweed and dashi in all flavor packets. There is no avoiding any ingredient. I’ll post pictures as I open them up.
Question: Does this soup contain MSG
Answer: People keep answering "no" to that very question, but allow me to clarify: it does not contain ADDED msg. The broth of any miso soup contains kombu, a type of seaweed. If you take a look at a piece of dried kombu you'll notice a white crystalline substance on the surface. This is naturally-occurring msg. Any food with a flavor that could be described as 'umami' (soy sauce, miso, etc) contains naturally-occurring glutamates. That is the source of umami flavor. Hope that helps.

  • Each package contains three instant packets; also available in other flavors
  • 3 bags (9 pokets) 3x Net Wt. 1.05 Oz.

User questions & answers

Question: The description says :Soup mix also contains seaweed, green onions and wheat pieces - wheat pieces? Did they mean tofu pieces
Answer: I do not have your specific miso soup. I use the tofu miso one. On this package there is no reference to wheat.
Question: Why did I only get 1 bag, 3 pockets
Answer: This happened the first time I ordered. Look specifically for the multi-package box.
Question: I waa told that this is gluten free. True
Answer: I haven’t studied the label to know if it says that. But miso soup is typically gluten-free. Miso is soy—which is GF. Some makers of “soy sauce” do also include wheat in their brewing. If they do, then their product can’t be labeled gluten-free. If this miso soup is indeed specifically labeled GF and there is wheat among its ingredients, then it’s erroneous labeling and you might have a decent product lawsuit to file.
Question: Does this contain msg, and is it made in China
Answer: MSG is monosodium glutamate. It is found in many foods in nature - especially in seaweed/kelp. You eat it all the time and it is recognized as safe by every major food monitoring organization in the world including the FDA. "Monosodium glutamate (MSG), also known as sodium glutamate, is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the most abundant naturally occurring non-essential amino acids. Glutamic acid is found naturally in tomatoes, grapes, cheese, mushrooms and other foods." Generally speaking, MSG is found in many, many foods, but it is not always labeled as such.

User questions & answers

Question: How much sodium per serving and what size is the serving
Answer: It contains 480~570 mg of Sodium per serving, depending on the flavor. Each serving has two packets, fresh Miso paste and garnish which weighs 15~16.7 g, depending on the flavor. You add 160 ml of hot water.
Question: Anyone know the shelf life of *unopened* bottles? bought a single bottle (msg allergy, so i had to be sure), but the 3-pack is less expensive per unit
Answer: I bought a three pack six months ago just opened my last bottle and it was still as good as the first bottle. So I think the shelf life probably is 6 months. It should have a sold by date somewhere on the bottle.
Question: Is this product pasteurized
Answer: I have no idea. Ask at www.marukomeusa.com
Question: Can we get an ingredients list
Answer: Miso, rice, Sea salt, alcohol , filtered water, sweet rice wine, Yeast extract, Bonito powder, soy beans,
Question: how much should you add for say 4cups of liquid
Answer: Manufacturer says 2tbsp per 1 1/2 cups of water. 4 cups would require in the neighborhood of 5 tbsp and 2 tsp. Start with under doing the miso and add for taste.
Question: Does anyone have calorie/nutritional information for this product
Answer: I'm sure its on the package but its in Chinese so I cant read it. Its just dried seaweed and dried tofu which are are in tiny pieces. Since you only need 1 teaspoon per cup (it swells up), I would imagine its next to nothing.
Question: How many ounces and hopefully no added salt
Answer: Net weight:3.527ounce(100g) Use 0.035ounce(1g) for 1 person. This product is a ingredient to be added to miso soup. You will need miso paste separately. Salt is included in miso paste. Normally, we do not add it. However, if the taste is light, you may add salt.
Question: I've never made miso soup..is this package all I need or do I need to purchase something else
Answer: This is just the ingredients, You'll need Miso paste or Miso stock to add to it. This makes ALOT of soup. Think of this item as the carrots, potatos, onions and beef of a stew. Its not a stew without the base broth/stock. If its too difficult I recomend kiikoman miso soup instant, But tis item here will give you more bang for your buck, I promise
Question: There have been alerts, as to not adding too much. What would be your recommendation in tsp or tbls to add to an 8ou soup cup
Answer: In a cup of soup, I add about a teaspoon( little less for your first cup to test your taste). Basically a 3 finger pinch and I break up the seaweed a bit in my fingers before adding. This mix is THE BEST! It will not disappoint!
