Answer: It is 1 1/2 inches. I also have one that is 2” that I purchased from another retailer. I like the 1 1/2 for the price it’s good but I like the 3” better for holding the heat longer. I plan to use the 1 1/2 on my grill this summer and it also comes with the tray which is a plus.

Answer: It should last years if treated appropriately such as heating and cleaning
