14 best whole grains

Whole grains are grains that retain all parts of the original seed, including the bran, germ, and endosperm. These grains are considered to be more nutritious and healthier than refined grains, which have had the bran and germ removed during processing. Here's what you need to know about whole grains:

  1. Nutritional Benefits: Whole grains are rich in essential nutrients, including dietary fiber, vitamins (such as B vitamins), minerals (like magnesium and iron), and antioxidants. The bran and germ layers contain many of these nutrients, which are lost in the refining process.

  2. Dietary Fiber: Whole grains are an excellent source of dietary fiber, both soluble and insoluble. Fiber is important for digestive health, as it helps regulate bowel movements and can contribute to a feeling of fullness, which may aid in weight management.

  3. Low Glycemic Index: Whole grains generally have a lower glycemic index (GI) compared to refined grains. This means they have a slower and more gradual effect on blood sugar levels, which can be beneficial for people with diabetes or those looking to maintain steady energy levels.

  4. Heart Health: Consuming whole grains is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. The fiber in whole grains can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure).

  5. Weight Management: Whole grains can be part of a healthy diet for weight management. The fiber content helps control appetite and may reduce overall calorie intake.

  6. Types of Whole Grains: Common examples of whole grains include:

    • Whole wheat: This includes whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat flour.
    • Brown rice: Unlike white rice, brown rice retains the bran and germ layers.
    • Oats: Rolled oats and steel-cut oats are popular choices for a hearty breakfast.
    • Quinoa: A pseudocereal that's rich in protein and considered a complete protein source.
    • Barley: Used in soups and stews, barley is another nutritious whole grain.
    • Buckwheat: Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is gluten-free.
    • Millet: A gluten-free grain often used in porridge or as a side dish.
    • Amaranth: A highly nutritious grain known for its protein content.
  7. Cooking and Preparation: Whole grains may take longer to cook than refined grains, and they often require more water or liquid. Cooking times can vary, so it's essential to follow specific instructions for each type of grain.

  8. Incorporating Whole Grains: You can include whole grains in your diet by choosing whole grain products such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, and whole grain pasta. Additionally, you can incorporate whole grains into meals by using them in salads, soups, side dishes, and breakfast cereals.

In summary, whole grains offer numerous health benefits due to their rich nutrient content and fiber. They are a valuable part of a balanced diet and can contribute to improved digestive health, heart health, and weight management. Incorporating a variety of whole grains into your meals can help you enjoy their nutritional advantages.

Great River Organic Milling

Product description

Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.

  • Contains 1 - 25 pound bag
  • Quality wheat with 13-14% protein content
  • Excellent whole grain wheat for use in your home milling machine
  • Certified organic and kosher approved. Cholesterol is zero
  • Grown and harvested in the USA

User questions & answers

Question: what is couscous
Answer: whole rye berries, and they are the best.
Question: What Are The Health Benefits
Answer: IT MUST BE STORED COOL, DRY, AND IN THE DARK. I put a month's worth of whest in a vacuum freezer bag, vacuum seal it with an Amazon oxygen absorber pack, to keep it from going rancid (from the natural oils in the berries) AND a moisture absorber, to help it stay dry. Alternatively, use a small piece of cloth or a pouch of UNTREATED (no oil coating on the steel wool to reduce rusting) FINE 000 gauge steel wool inside the bag, will help remove the moisture (by rusting) & remove oxygen too, (by rusting as well). I remove the cloth pouch of steel wool when I unsealed the bag, and discard it, after inspecting it to see how much oxygen and moisture it "absorbed" by rusting. COOL, DARK, NO AIR, AND DRY, and your wheat berries can last for over a decade. I've heard of people keeping unground grains for decades this way.
Question: What is one Serving
Answer: Yes, It is absolutely good medium for mushroom growing. I used rye as mushroom growing medium for years till I moved to oats that I get locally. 1/3 of price, produce same amount of mushrooms.
Question: What does "toasted" mean? i want plain couscous, not whole-wheat, and not treated. any help out there. thanks
Answer: All Julies Real products are Paleo and contain no refined ingredients. Any sweetness comes from Organic Honey

Answer: Rich in Selenium, Selenium is an essential mineral.May Help Lower Cancer Risk, Boosts Your Immune System, Good Source of Plant-Based Protein, Very Easy to Prepare
Question: is this organic
Answer: 1/3 to 1/2 cup. I use 1/2 cup as a main meal with a mix of chopped veggies
Question: do you need to wash before milling
Answer: It didn't taste toasted to me. Made a Parmesan garlic couscous. This is the style that is used in Italian wedding soup also. Hope that helps
Question: Is there a nutritional difference between the red and white wheat berries
Answer: No. Hulless barley is a special type of barley that has a loosely attached hull which falls off during harvesting. With hulled barley, the hulls are removed through minimal processing, leaving the bran layer intact.I have used both and think there is little difference between them. Question: What is shelf life time
Answer: We don't recommend washing the wheat before milling. Our wheat is triple cleaned before packaging.

Answer: Hard winter wheat, has reacher nutritions and micro elements than the spring wheat. User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone made rejuvelac with this
Answer: I have ordered this monthly for YEARS. I am AMAZED that the cases of 12 packages to a case do not arrive broken more than they do. About every 4-5 months I get boxes where there are enough cracked individual packages (they put next to NO padding in the box and the boxes are too large) that I ask for a replacement or refund. I have pleaded with them and sent photos of how there is little to no padding for protection inside the box. These are fragile crackers! They still pack them very poorly and I am amazed each time an order arrives with no damage to the product. I LOVE these, but Amazon does a crappy job of packing them for shipping.
Question: Does anyone know how many cups of flour 1 cup of these kamut berries yield

Question: how do "Berries" compare to "Grain"? There are two different ads for this and the berries are much more expensive. I thought berries WERE grain
Answer: There aren't very many growers of Kamut. I believe most, if not all Kamut grain are grown in Montana, USA. In response to Stewart Allen's claim that it doesn't rise, that is false. I just made 3 loaves. It rode beautifully as I proofed it a few times. It doubled in size in my glass pans but lacked oven spring because I didn't shape the loaves right, but they did rise. This was my first time making whole grain Kamut bread. It wasn't the white, but I think the white would rise more readily. You can't treat Kamut flour the same as all purpose flour. Add less flour.
