12 best dried white rice
Dried white rice is a staple food product commonly found in kitchens around the world. It is a versatile ingredient that serves as a foundation for a wide variety of dishes. Here's what you need to know about dried white rice:
Types of White Rice: White rice comes in different varieties, but the two primary types are long-grain and short-grain. Long-grain rice, like jasmine or basmati, has a slender shape and is known for its separate, fluffy grains. Short-grain rice, such as sushi or Arborio, is plump and sticky, making it ideal for dishes that require a more compact texture.
Processing: White rice is produced by removing the outer layers of the rice grain, including the husk, bran, and germ. This process results in the white, polished appearance of the grains. The removal of these layers also extends the rice's shelf life.
Cooking: To prepare dried white rice for consumption, it needs to be cooked. The most common method is boiling or steaming, which allows the grains to absorb water and become tender. The cooking time and water-to-rice ratio may vary depending on the type of rice and desired texture.
Versatility: Dried white rice is incredibly versatile and serves as the basis for a wide range of dishes worldwide. It can be used in savory dishes like stir-fries, curries, and pilafs or in sweet dishes like rice pudding. It's also a staple in sushi and risotto.
Nutritional Value: White rice is a good source of carbohydrates, providing energy for the body. It is naturally gluten-free, low in fat, and easy to digest. However, it is lower in fiber and some nutrients compared to brown rice, as the outer layers have been removed.
Storage: Dried white rice has a long shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Proper storage prevents the rice from absorbing moisture, which can lead to spoilage or the growth of insects.
Cultural Significance: White rice is a dietary staple in many cultures, especially in Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern cuisines. It often holds cultural and symbolic significance in various rituals and celebrations.
Variations: In addition to plain white rice, you can find variations like parboiled rice, which is partially precooked before packaging, or enriched white rice, which has some nutrients (such as B vitamins and iron) added back after processing.
Rice Flour: Ground white rice is used to make rice flour, which is a key ingredient in gluten-free baking and can be used for making noodles, bread, and various desserts.
Sustainability: Sustainable rice farming practices are essential for the environment and farmers. Some regions have adopted eco-friendly methods to reduce water usage and environmental impact in rice cultivation.
In summary, dried white rice is a fundamental pantry staple with worldwide culinary significance. Its versatility, long shelf life, and neutral flavor make it a popular choice for countless recipes and cuisines.

Mahatma Extra Long Grain Enriched Rice - Naturally Sodium Free & Fat Free - Net Wt. 16 OZ (454 g) Each - Pack of 3
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this for only one bag of rice |
Answer: | No, this is for 3 bags of Mahatma Extra Long Grain Enriched Rice. Each bag of rice is 16 ounces. |
Question: | Is it bad to rinse this rice? I’ve always rinced jasmine rice before |
Answer: | No I rinse it several times prior to cooking. I cook it in a lot of water with salt over med low heat until tender. Then I drain in a collander and put collander over pot with a little water in it and steam the rice. I have the heat on simmer at this time. |
Question: | My kids hate rice. Will they eat this |
Answer: | Here's an idea. I make rice with organic chicken broth instead of water. The broth is not expensive on line from Walmart. You can add whatever seasonings you like to the water. Here's a fail proof way to cook the rice. Put 1 cup rice and 2 cups broth in a sauce pot that has a lid. Bring rice to a boil uncovered. I take a FORK and stir the rice once just to make sure it hasn't settled to the bottom. Reduce heat to simmer and cover the pan with a clean cotton towel. Place the lid firmly over the towel and bring the sides of the towel up over the top of the lid so they don't hang down near the burner. Cook for 20 mins using a timer. DO NOT PEEK. If you lift the lid you lose steam. After 20 mins take the pot of rice off the stove (DON'T LIFT THE LID) and set aside for 20 mins more. DON'T PEEK..lol. NOW take the lid off and you've got wonderful rice EVERY time. Good luck with the kids. Oh..the towel...just throw it in the laundry basket. It washes out fine. It just has some steamy rice starch on it. |
Question: | Why is it called enriched |
Answer: | This is common. A google search reports, “White rice is milled rice that has had its husk, bran, and germ removed. This alters the flavor, texture and appearance of the rice and helps prevent spoilage and extend its storage life. ... White rice is often enriched with some of the nutrients stripped from it during its processing.“ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the rice in a mylar bag or other type of bag, or do you have to depend on the tub |
Answer: | just in the tub |
Question: | I received one bucket in the mail, while taking it out of the box i pressed down on the lid I could hear air escaping, has the seal broken |
Answer: | This is most likely a bad seal caused by a broken or faulty o-ring gasket inside the lid. Rather than trying to send it back, it would be easier for you to purchase another square lid and several oxygen absorbents and re-seal it yourself. But check the rice grains for visible signs of mold or other bad things, and make sure that the smell is normal - if all good; seal it and you'll have peace of mind for many years! |
Question: | Where does this rice come from? What country? Is it organic? Thanks |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this rice gluten free |
Answer: | Rice is gluten free. |
Question: | Does this product have the non GMO project verified symbol on it |
Answer: | There are only 10 commercially available GE crops produced and sold in the U.S.: field and sweet corn (not popcorn), soybeans, alfalfa, cotton, sugar beets, papaya, canola, squash, apples, and potatoes. And though derivatives of a few of these are present in a lot of packaged foods, a huge chunk of the project’s (non-GMO) 43,623 verified products and counting have no “GMO” counterpart on store shelves. These include popcorn, quinoa, kale, chicken, tomatoes, grapes, rice, and latex condoms, among others. This practice is illegal in Canada where, as described in the Manitoba Co-operator, sellers can't claim that a single or multi-ingredient food product is not made with genetic engineering if no GE alternative exists. |

Answer: | Hi Bird, We sell the 25 lb bag for $58.56 plus shipping. Cheaper than the 66; but sorry it isn't like the old days. Happy shopping, VickiWorld Organics, Direct |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this delivered? will it be in an amazon box? i just don't want it exposed if it's just within its sack. tia |
Answer: | 4.5- 3/4 cup (100g) servings |
Question: | Small black bugs are inside the bag. when i wash rice they are floating. what can be done |
Answer: | The bad doesn't say, but the company is located in Canada. Have you looked at their web site? |
Question: | How long is each grain fully cooked |
Answer: | These beans are NOT soft. Yes, they had to be soaked in order to sprout them, but then they had to dry them to make them shelf stable. The instructions do mention soaking for shorter cooking time. The instructions, exactly as written on the bag:Instructions:Add 1 cup of Beans to 4 cups of boiling water in a medium saucepan. Boil for 15 minutes.Remove from heat and drain.Ready to consume, or add to any meal.Makes 4 servings.Presoak for shorter cooking time.BTW, I used to eat these without presoaking or cooking and I loved the flavor -- then I broke a tooth. If you want to eat these straight out of the bag, do so at your own risk. Fixing a broken tooth can be quite painful AND expensive. Now I boil some water, remove the water from the heat, then add the beans. After soaking an hour or two, they're soft enough to eat as a snack (or add to a cooked dish). |
Question: | There is a rumour of synthetic rice adulteration in Royal brand basmati, especially that is sold from Amazon. Can i buy this rice with confidence |
Answer: | Hi Jean, I don't know precisely where these beans are grown, but I just assumed it was somewhere in Canada because it has the canadian organic label. I like the beans but the expense of shipping was over the top for me so I have to figure out a different source. Hope this is helpful! Best regards, Louise |
