14 best farro wheat
Farro wheat is an ancient whole grain that has been cultivated for thousands of years. It is related to wheat but is often considered a distinct species due to its unique characteristics and uses. Here's what you need to know about farro wheat:
Origin and History: Farro has its origins in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, where it has been grown for over 2,000 years. It was a staple grain in the diets of ancient civilizations, including the Romans and Egyptians.
Types of Farro: There are three main types of farro:
- Emmer Farro (Triticum dicoccum): This is the most traditional and ancient type of farro. It has a nutty flavor and a chewy texture.
- Spelt Farro (Triticum spelta): Spelt farro is a bit larger and lighter in color compared to emmer farro. It has a slightly sweeter taste.
- Einkorn Farro (Triticum monococcum): Einkorn farro is the smallest and simplest form of farro. It has a delicate, slightly sweet flavor.
Nutritional Value: Farro is a highly nutritious grain. It is an excellent source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamins (particularly B vitamins), and minerals like iron and magnesium. It is also relatively low in gluten, making it a potential option for some people with gluten sensitivity, though it is not gluten-free.
Cooking: Farro is often used in a variety of dishes, including salads, soups, and side dishes. It is cooked by simmering it in water or broth until it becomes tender but still slightly chewy, similar to al dente pasta.
Texture and Flavor: Cooked farro has a pleasant, chewy texture and a slightly nutty flavor, which adds a hearty and wholesome element to dishes.
Culinary Uses: Farro can be used in a wide range of recipes. It's commonly used in salads, as a base for grain bowls, in risottos, or as a side dish. It pairs well with vegetables, herbs, and various seasonings.
Health Benefits: Farro's high fiber content can promote digestive health, help regulate blood sugar levels, and contribute to a feeling of fullness. Its nutrient profile also makes it a healthy choice for overall nutrition.
Availability: Farro can be found in many health food stores, specialty grocery stores, and online retailers. It is available in both whole grain and pearled (partially processed) forms.
Farro wheat is a versatile and nutritious grain that has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years due to its health benefits and culinary adaptability. It is a valuable addition to a balanced diet and can be incorporated into a wide variety of dishes.

User questions & answers
Question: | what type is this ? spelt (triticum spelta), emmer (triticum dicoccum), and einkorn (triticum monococcum |
Answer: | If it says pearled that means it is not whole (no husk). If it cooks in 30 minutes is pealed. Whole farro will take more like 60 minutes |
Question: | How quickly do these expire |
Answer: | My rice cooker has an oatmeal setting. I made "farrotto" using twice as much liquid as farro for 35 minutes on the oatmeal setting with an occasional stir. |
Question: | is this kosher certified |
Answer: | Hello Renee, I would cook it like oatmeal. For the creamiest texture, put grain (I grind it first) in COLD water, 2 parts water to one part grain. Stirring almost constantly over med heat until thick and some lava type bubbles appear at the surface. Cover and let set for about 10 mins. I have been making bread with ground farro. Challenging as far as texture goes but GOSH, the flavor is 5 stars. My 28 yr old VERY picky eater, loves it.......shocking!I also find that any cooked grain tastes richer the second day after refrigeration. So many tricks to the trade ay? |
Question: | can you plant this farrow |
Answer: | don't know but will gladly send you like 50 grains by mail and you can experiment. Just leave me an address. |

A versatile ancient grain packed with nutrition and flavour. Whole Grain Farro is the berries of some of the first wheat strains known to man including spelt, emmer, or einkorn and looks like short grain rice with a burnished mahogany appearance and a distinct, nutty flavour and chewiness. A grain synonymous with Italian cooking, it's used to make the minestrone-like, Zuppa di Farro, and lentils and farro pilaf. Toss in a salad with roasted root or grilled vegetables, use in place of barley or rice in soups, or serve as a hot breakfast cereal with fresh berries and ricotta cheese. One 1kg bag has approximately 22 servings.
Dedicated to supplying only the best quality wholesale ingredients, our passion for healthful grains and legumes is evident in the wholesome flavour and texture of all of our products. Our commitment to quality is unsurpassed in the industry, and whether searching for traditional grains or creating a unique blend all our own, the Epigrain line has it all. With a wide selection of nutritious ingredients, creating beautifully presented dishes is more convenient than ever.
- STEP UP YOUR GRAINS – Expand the variety of grains you eat by trying this widely forgotten ancient food, which has been nicknamed “Pharaoh’s wheat” due to its egyptian origins before it came to Italy. Not only is farro making a comeback for its great taste, it’s also more nutrient packed than most other grains.
- PREMIUM QUALITY – Epigrain is dedicated to supplying only the best quality ingredients, and their passion for healthful grains and legumes is evident in the wholesome flavour and texture of all of their products. This farro only has 1 ingredient: farro. You can be sure that nothing else has been added and that you have the purest, highest quality product possible.
- A HEALTHY CHOICE – Farro grains are extremely high in fibre, iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B and protein. It’s also sure to fill you up , since it’s an unprocessed grain; this means it has an intact bran and germ, the parts of the grain that provide nutrients, protein and fiber, which winds up swelling up in your digestive tract, keeping you satisfied for longer than refined grains. As an unprocessed grain, it is also high in antioxidants.
- HIGH VERSATILITY – Farro grain is extremely versatile and can be utilized in myriad recipes. For instance, you can add it in any pureed vegetable soup, stir-fry it with eggs and veggies, toss it in salad, serve it as a hot breakfast cereal with fresh berries and ricotta cheese… the possibilities are almost endless.
- ALTERNATIVE DIET COMPATIBILITY – Farro grain is naturally organic food that is 100% vegan and vegetarian friendly, and its high level of nutrients make it all the more suited for a balanced diet of that sort. And while farro grain does contain gluten, it contains lower levels than today’s wheat, and if prepared properly, the gluten is pre-digested and broken down by sprouting and fermentation like a sourdough process. This makes it much more tolerable with anyone sensitive to gluten.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to soak this farro overnight before cooking |
Answer: | I have not popped as popcorn, but I have microwaved it. Am using it as filler for heating pads. The kernels do not explode. I would imagine the same principle would hold true for a popcorn popper. For what it's worth, that is my experience with the groats. -Susan Elliott |
Question: | Is this product organic? It says 'naturally organic' in the title but not sure what that means exactly |
Answer: | Call Woodland Foods for that information... |
Question: | Is this long grain or medium |
Answer: | Yes... raw dried... boil about 20 minuets and it’s ready to eat... start checking the Texture before you stop the boil at about 17 minuets... |
Question: | Is this farro einkorn |
Answer: | I believe that what I have been buying is organic and non gmo. I don't think that it will sprout, because I recall having foundsome online, which purports to be for sprouting. I use my buckwheat mixed 50-50 with whole oat groats and eat it every day, cooked, for breakfast. |

Answer: | There is no expiration date on package. I am using the third of four packages that have been on the shelf for at least four months. |
Question: | Where was this farro produced |
Answer: | It is a grain, grown in Italy. I did not think that farmed products, that are not cooked or prepared, would be kosher certified. |
Question: | which grain is used? spelt (triticum spelta), emmer (triticum dicoccum), and einkorn (triticum monococcum |
Answer: | No. The farro that you eat has been harvested from the mature plants. You have to buy farro seeds for planting. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is each package 17.6 oz, or is that net weight of the three packages |
Answer: | When I bought this I didn't know what pearled meant. Now that I've researched it, it means the bran has been removed, which means is does take less time to cook. Next time I won't buy pearled farro, because I want the added nutrition. The package instructions say that once it reaches a boil, it should simmer for 20 minutes. |
Question: | how many cups of farro per 17.6 oz package |
Answer: | I believe it's not pearled at all. The cooking time depends. If you soak it overnight, it'll take about 10 minutes. I never soak it, though, and cook it slowly (bring a ratio of 2 water to 1 farro to a boil, then simmer for at least 1/2 an hour; more time won't damage it). |
Question: | The nutritional information says a serving is 50 gm. Is that cooked or uncooked |
Answer: | Never takes me any longer than cooking regular rice. Sometimes I turn it off sooner and let it sit in water until it cools. I usually only use enough water so that it is absorbed and none to pour off. I have also cooked in my small rice cooker. Turned out fine. |
Question: | Farro can be 3 different kinds of grain. The description says emmer, but also says don't rely on the description. What is the actual variety of this |
Answer: | it is a cardboard box containing a single plastic back (cereal style) of farro grains |
- One 10 pound bag
- ow in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium and high in fiber, vitamins and minerals.
- Ingredients: Organic Whole Grain Emmer Wheat (Farro)
- Our organic whole grains are high-pressure vacuum sealed to keep out moisture and oxygen, giving you long lasting fresh grains with every package!
User questions & answers
Question: | Will this sprout |
Answer: | It is each package 17.6 oz |
Question: | Where it’s grown |
Answer: | I poured my newly arrived bag of farro, a 3 lb bag, into a large measuring cup and it measured 7 C so 17.6 oz would be just over a third of that. I measured out around 17.5 oz using my kitchen scale and then measured the volume to find ~2.25 C. |
Question: | What are the amounts of Magnesium, Zinc and Niacin |
Answer: | The serving size is 50 gm dry. I just read a newer package of Farro that I have, and it clearly states that the recommended serving size is DRY. |
Question: | About how many individual grains come in 2lbs |
Answer: | Odds are it is emmer as that is the most commonly cultivated species in Italy. However, as consumers, we may not be able to discern the differences between the three species...perhaps an ethnobotanist may know the nuances of each species. |

Making Flour from Emmer Wheat
Emmer flour can be used for a variety of recipes and is best ground at the medium to coarsest setting on the Lee Household Flour Mill. All stone mills can have potential challenges with grinding gluten-rich grains at the finest setting due to the stone gumming up. To make flour, simply pour the grains into the hopper, select your desired coarseness and mill until the hopper is empty.
About Royal Lee Organics
Our mission is to continue the legacy of Dr. Royal Lee by offering the highest quality products that focus on complete nutritional value.

- [Whole Grain] – These wheat berries are the definition of whole grain – they grow in a husk and are plucked from the ancient, unchanged Einkorn plant whole. They are plump, delicious, and filled with amazing nutrients.
- [Grown In America] – Our wheats are grown right here on American soil by farmers who care about health and the environment. By “going back to our roots” and consuming this 14,000 year old grain, we restore our natural balance and health.
- [Easy To Cook] – Unlike some ancient grains, Virgin Wheat is just as easy to cook as rice. With only a few minutes and some boiling water, you can enjoy this savory delicious grain with almost anything -- it is delicious in salads, with proteins, or all by itself!

This was the discovery of Virgin Wheat, a nutritious and easily grown food source that could be reliably harvested. When people learned to sustain themselves by farming wheat, they were able to form civilizations, without the need to be nomadic. User questions & answers
Question: | Has it been pearled or is it whole berries |
Answer: | Wheat berries will double in volume when cooked, so 1 part uncooked wheat berries will equal 2 parts cooked wheat berries. 2 pounds uncooked Wheat Berries = 5 cups uncooked = 10 cups cooked |
Question: | Is this the type of farro that can be cooked and eaten like oats |
Answer: | Sure. You can grind it as you like. Actually it tastes amazing when you grind and use fresh flour. |
Question: | Is this einkorn 100% organic? i know it says organic but not 100%. in the u.s "organic" means 70% of the product must be organic, but not |
Answer: | The gluten in Einkorn is genetically differnet then the modern wheat gluten. I believe that this medical study can help you. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3573730/ |
Question: | Where is this particular product grown - country of origin |
Answer: | Yes, these can be sprouted. Soak 12 hours, drain in colander, and rinse well. After rinsing well, return to bowl, and cover with damp flour sack towel. Repeat this process until you see the grain starts to sprout. I then place mine in my Excalibur dehydrator on silicone sheets, or the ultra fine mesh dehydrator sheets. I set the dehydrator to around 95-100*F, and leave until fully dry. Then I use my MockMill 200 to grind mine to a fine flour. I usually get about 1.5 cups of flour for each cup I grind. You can set your mill to grind a coarser grind, for a more rustic bread, but my family prefers bread made with fine ground flour. Be sure that your sprouted grain is totally dry before trying to grind. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can we make tortillas or chapati out of this flour |
Answer: | The berries are whole but the hull has been removed. |
Question: | Will these sprout if I soak and rinse them for a few days prior to cooking |
Answer: | Hi Janet - I haven't used it like oatmeal but I cook it and use in salads. I simmer it in salted water 40-45 minutes, drain and rinse and its ready to go. This is *not* the semi-pearled variety most commonly seen in the US. The pearling process wears off some of the nutritious bran layer so it cooks a little faster. This wheat is not pearled, so it retains all its nutrition. A bit of extra cooking time seems a small price to pay for whole, nutritious, not to mention yummy, grain. Try searching on "einkorn porridge". I found a recipe that said to pulse the grains in a blender prior to cooking. This cuts the cooking time in half and may be what you're looking for. |
Question: | Is this pearled or send me pearled |
Answer: | This einkorn is 100% organic. |
Question: | If I plant this wheat will it sprout and produce more wheat berries |
Answer: | I am not sure about this brand as I do not have that one currently. I know some are grown in Italy and some in the USA |

User questions & answers
Question: | When were they harvested and how are they stored before shipping? Thank you |
Answer: | I wouldn't think so, Farro is a pretty course grain. I find it delicious and use it as a cereal or mixed in yogurt with fruit. Perhaps if you ground the Farro in a food processor, you might get flour, but I think you would miss one of the features of the grain that I enjoy. |
Question: | Are wheat berries the same as wheat germ |
Answer: | If you soak them for a few days, they will probably sprout. |
Question: | what is the shelf life for the 5 lb bag |
Answer: | This emmer farro is not pearled and it doesn't come in a pearled version. There is a split emmer farro which you can find in our other listings. |
Question: | are these berries whole grain |
Answer: | We have talked to farm where we buy our farro. They don't recommend planting their products. They suggested buying from a seed grower instead. |
