User questions & answers

Question: Are they packaged airtight? I couldn't tell from the way the bag looks. Buying bulk. Thanks
Answer: Yes, two 1 pound bags.
Question: How many cups are in a 5 pound bag? I'm trying to figure out if the entire bag will fit in my storage containers
Answer: These beans are certified organic, so no glyphosate or GMOs - at least that’s the claim.
Question: what is the best way to store these? I'm wondering how protective the jute bag is from rodents, bugs etc
Answer: There is a two year expiration date from today's date. We look forward to your orders! Helen/Mulberry Lane Farm/Seller
Question: Are these Organic
Answer: I bought mine about 3 months ago and the expiration date on it is: 10-10-2020. I don't know if they are 2018 crop or not but I can tell you that they are very good and buttery after they are cooked. I highly recommend them. Also, they sprout after a couple of days of soaking which tells me they are pretty fresh.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these lentils safe from cross contamination by gluten during processing
Answer: They are packaged in a cloth drawstring bag so not airtight. It's my second time ordering because I'm very pleased with the super high percentage of sprouting.
Question: Shod we soak the red and green lentils
Answer: I weighed a level cup of dry lentils and got 7.05 oz. That would be approximately 11.35 cups for the whole 5 lb bag.
Question: Are your products Organic
Answer: Storage is very important. I store beans & legumes 2 ways: in the cupboard using Snapware containers (I believe that a 17 cup one will hold the 5 lbs of lentils. Then there is the less than glamorous way using a food safe bucket with a gamma lid. I use both methods because I buy 20 lbs of soybeans at a time for soy milk. Beans that I only buy little bits of, and don't use all that often get put into a Ziploc and, after a trip to the freezer, find themselves dumped into the bucket along with the soybeans. I have a smaller canister that I keep soybeans at hand in. As for the jute bag question: not. There is, however a plastic bag inside of the jute bag but once you've opened it, you will really want to put them into something airtight.
Question: where are these lentils grown
Answer: I contacted the company. They are not organic. The gentleman who responded to my email was so defensive about my request to know if glyphosate (RoundUp) was used in harvest that I suspect it is. He said that glyphosate was not forbidden by the WHO so they are free to use it even though the WHO lists it as a probable carcinogen. Who cares what field it was grown in if you don't know what chemicals were used on it? I am so disappointed because I love the taste and texture of these lentils, but I will not. buy them again.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm surprised that these split red lentils taste different than those that I purchased from a different supplier. What would cause a taste difference
Answer: Yes.
Question: Are these radiated
Answer: You don't need to soak red and your choice for green. Unlike red, green lentils take a good 30-40 minutes to cook, where red or brown are done in about 15. We prevent the green.
Question: are these whole lentils? So often red lentils are bits and pieces and cook to mush
Answer: They are not. They have organic, but did not get them because of the higher price.
Question: There are no cooking instructions on the bag, what are the cooking directions
Answer: Canada. I just contacted the seller. They need to add that information to the label and will do so. I cooked with the lentils yesterday and they are amazing!

User questions & answers

Question: Other brands of yellow split peas on Amazon look brownish yellow. Are yours naturally bright yellow
Answer: It could relate to the growing environment and conditions.
Question: When were these beans harvested? I am tired of old supermarket beans that will never become tender, no matter how long they are cooked
Answer: I don't think so. I think it is the best lentil ever.
Question: Are these processed on equipment shared with wheat
Answer: It's hard to tell what you mean by "whole lentils". I eat a fair amount of lentils and have never seen any type sold as "bits and pieces". Lentils are either split (the most common way they are sold in the US) or unhulled. Dal, by definition, refers to hulled, split lentils. Split red lentils always cook to "mush"; that's the whole point. They are intended to cook down to a thick porridge or stew. If you want lentils that stay as intact beans after cooking, get green of brown lentils.
Question: Can I plant these in my garden
Answer: Hi Emily! These lentils cook very quickly in 15-20 minutes. Traditionally they are used to make Dhal in India, for which you will find recipes online, however, I use them in vegetarian soups and stews and add spices like caraway seed, ground coriander, cumin, ras el hanout, cinnamon, basil, cardamom (about a teaspoon of each) and then any combination of vegetables - chopped and diced onion, carrot, squash, potato, sweet potato, zucchini, parsnip etc. with 1 tablespoon of olive oil covered with boiling water and cooked over moderate heat. Also, make sure to stir the mix often so it doesn't stick and add more water or allow to evaporate according to degree of thickness desired. Delicious with rice, pasta, quinoa. Lentils are a good and flavorful thickening agent too.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there Expiration date posted
Answer: Yes, our split peas are naturally beautiful yellow!
Question: Do these come with instructions on how to cook each of them
Answer: As to the date of the black beans, I do not know. However, I recommend the black beluga lentils from the same company. They are nicely tender after about 40 min with no pre-soaking. I use them instead of black beans. They maintain their shape, in contrast to other lentils, which become mushy.
Question: Why are the lentils and the chickpeas in a drawstring bag and the split peas are not
Answer: Yes. It says that on the bag
Question: How long do these last if unopened
Answer: Yes, the lentils will sprout. They are best planted in the Spring for harvest in late Summer.

User questions & answers

Question: Can these lentils be easily sprouted
Answer: Hi Karina, this is Alyssa with Palouse Brand. Garbanzo beans and chickpeas are the same thing. You can use these garbanzo beans to make chick pea flour. Let me know at [email protected] if there is anything else I can do for you. Thanks!
Question: Do you have the nutritional information? This is the only one of your products where I don't see a photo of the back label
Answer: I did a little math just now, because I recently retired all my canned pulses, and switched exclusively to dried (reason: vastly better texture, better taste, better shelf life, 3-5x cheaper, and no BPA ... a WIN-WIN). A common rule of thumb is 1 cup Dried Garbanzos yields slightly more than one typical 13.5-15.5 oz can (cooked), but since it's a nice round number that's easy to remember (1:2), it's commonplace to equate them ... but it's probably higher, since many budget brands dont fully fill their cans (possibly because labeling laws in the country of origin only require "net weight" rather than "dry" {drained} weight").I have no data on Palouse chickpeas, but I measured some generic garbanzos just now ... * 1 cup Dried Garbanzos (Generic) = approx 200 gr dry wt = 0.44 lb. If we accept the 1 cup = 1 can equivalence mentioned earlier ...* 5/0.44 = 11 - 12 cans, minimum (but probably closer to 15-16)------------------------------------BTW, just for price comparison: If you're looking for organic non-GMO pulses like garbanzos, $3/lb seems fairly commonplace for 3-5# size online for most varieties, whereas in my local indo-pak store (where garbanzos are called "Kabuli Channa" in Hindi), unrated generic bulk repackaged by the store in 3-5 lb bags generally costs about $1/lb (or a smidge more), and premium organics double or triple that. Whether or not I buy $1/lb generic bulk or $3/lb premium depends on what I'm buying ... I usually dont mind spending a minute or so to dump the former onto a baking sheet and pickover to remove any discolored/damaged peas or the occasional pebble before transferring it to cryovac or a glass jar.
Question: Are these lentils 100% Non-Irradiated
Answer: Hi there, this is Sara Mader, the owner of Palouse Brand. Years ago we started decreasing the use of glyphosate in our fields to address customer concerns. In 2018 and 2019 we used no roundup on our chickpea/garbanzo bean growing crop. I hope this clears up all questions and concerns. It is our goal to never spray a crop with Glyphosate.
Question: How can we verify this is truly organic? can verification be done through usda
Answer: Hi there, this is Sara Mader the owner of Palouse Brand. We have changed our farming practices and methods over the years to be more in line with customer expectations. Our farm has been decreasing the use of glyphosate in general for years. In fact the 2018 and 2019 growing crops were not sprayed with any glyphosate -hope this answer is clear enough and helps customers navigate through their purchasing decisions. We are proud to be a transparent company where if you have questions on Amazon products you can use the buyer/seller messaging forum to contact us as we arent good at normally monitor these reviews. I guess I could hire someone to monitor reviews and increase the product price -but the buyer/seller messaging forum helps to control our internal costs and is the right tool to use when asking questions.
